I would like to keep using XP, mostly for retro boxes, in which case web traffic would be restricted to locally hosted stuff. If you want to browse the web, setup another computer with a recent copy of Linux. The same goes for email. It would be nice to have some box to filter my network traffic so as to provide a sanitised version fit for XP and other 'ancient' Windows flavours - however I've had no success searching for any help on this front. The activation and update bit is a right pain, so I now don't try doing new installations, I just use saved images that are close enough then just make a few changes as needed. If you have a nice XP setup, grab an image now.
@adventuresinnostalgia8 ай бұрын
That's a very interesting setup you have for your retro boxes! Restricting web traffic to local content is a great way to keep XP secure. For viewers who might be curious about replicating this, could you elaborate a bit on how you achieved the network traffic filtering? Are there any specific tools or configurations you recommend?

I installed Windows XP Home in a Virtualbox VM in March 2010. That VM survived 2 VBox owners; 3 desktops and 4 CPUs. XP received all the updates till they stopped in 2014. I use the VM weekly to play the wma copies of my CDs and LPs with WoW and TrueBass effects. It could run Firefox 52.9.0 ESR; Format Factory 3.3.5; Rufus 2.14; Google SketchUp 8 and MS-Office 2003 :) I almost never use those programs anymore except Windows Media Player. I use the newest IOBIT software (Advanced System Care; Application Software Updater; Malware Fighter and Uninstaller) to maintain the system.

@bertnijhof54132 ай бұрын
@@adventuresinnostalgia Yes, I upgraded VirtualBox, and it runs now on the latest release 7.1.2 and Windows XP is still activated. I expect I activated it on a 2008 laptop with Athlon X2 (2C2T, 1.8GHz), it was the last laptop I used for work. It did run Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as Host OS and Windows XP VM was for compatibility with work (MS-Office). After retirement I used XP on a HP d510 with a Pentium 4 HT (1C2T; 3.2 GHz); HP dc5850 with a Phenom X3 (3C3T; 2.3 GHz) and later a Phenom II X4 (4C4T; 3.2 GHz) and an own build with a Ryzen 3 2200G (4C4T; 3.7 GHz). I assume Microsoft is more flexible with VMs, because in large organizations the VM might be run on a different server after - a switch over to a stand-by system after a HW failure or after - load balancing over a number of servers - the number of logical cores can be incompatible with Cores and Threads of the HW CPU, - some hypervisors might lie about the hardware; you have to select for the VM from a limited list of typical CPUs. I only lost the activation of the Windows Vista VM, all other Windows VMs from 2000, XP, 7, 8.1, 10 to 11 remain activated.

I installed Windows 7 on an 8-core 32GB Ryzen 7 desktop PC in Jan 2020. The only unsupported hardware feature is USB-C (Win7 driver not available), which can easily be worked around with a USB-3 adapter. I have a legacy Win7 corporate account from Microsoft and still receive periodic security updates. Mosaic also provides Win7 updates for Firefox. I use this Win7 machine daily and it still runs flawlessly. I have no plans to upgrade it further, particularly not since Windows 10 is scheduled to go EOL next year in 2025.
@The_DreadStorm6 ай бұрын
A little tip for XP users (of which I am one): If you go where your Network Adapter is, you can right-click on it, and drop a shortcut of it onto your desktop, making the switch easier. Right-clicking on the shortcut will also enable/disable it. I have two adapters in my machine, so I renamed the shortcut for the Internet one "Internet Connection" and the other is for my private domain. That way, when I go on the Internet, I can also disable the LAN one for added protection. Just makes things a whole lot easier. Or even better, make a batch file that enables one and disables the other with a simple double-click. If someone's familiar with XP, chances are they're familiar with Dial-Up internet access. Just think of it as that - dialing out and disconnecting. I am of the school of thought that, since I use internet sparingly on my XP rig, I don't need Antivirus. But I do use Microsoft's own Windows Defender for XP. Less bloat and BS, and with a little know-how, you can manually update the definitions for it using a download of the data file for a 32-bit Win7 version. Of course, until it's discontinued. heh

Don't store important files on this machine. Don't transfer files from XP to your main Windows, format your usb flash drive if you need to insert it into your clean system. Doesn't Legacy Update directly fly in the face of your stance on 3rd party service packs and updates from POS Ready? It's the same damn thing. THIRD PARTY. There could be unintentional security flaws and malware. That's what YOU said about 3rd party right? I disagree. The majority of the entire internet runs on an operating system made by the community and many many many 3rd parties. And yes even though Linux also just had a recent security flaw, has had them in the past and will again I'm sure it is still more secure and better than windows or most large corporations wouldn't be running their infrastructure on it and the internet would run on Windows. Windows has also had MANY MANY MANY MANY security flaws (that's why it has needed so many updates over the years) and even hardware can have security flaws. Intel processors have had and even recently an repairable security flaw in all Apples new M1 and M2 processors. Mitigation and safety are the key instead of being afraid of "third party" updates and security patches. I trust the open source community far more then I would MS. A company that is now BLOCKING users from updating their OS it they installed certain features to restore lost functionality to windows 11 that came standard in all previous versions of windows. And THIS is who you trust?
@adventuresinnostalgia8 ай бұрын
Yes, Legacy Update is 100% against my stance on the use of 3rd party updates. However, should Microsoft one day decide to remove all Windows XP updates from their servers, the WSUS program, etc. Legacy Update may be the only option. which is not dissimilar to the direction we are going with Windows generally. Linux may be the only option. I agree with your disagreement. In many ways Linux is superior to Windows, and one does not necessarily replace the other. The point within the context of the video is, the further out you go from the Microsoft ecosystem the more issue you will run into with security, compatibility, performance, etc. All software is flawed, and the flaws will be found and exploited eventually. For every software developer that is an indeterminate number of offensive security specialists working to find and exploit every imaginable vulnerability It's not about trust, it's about stability and function. Microsoft exists to make money. the Linux community exists to make and support good operating systems and software. Those two things don't really work well together on Windows XP.
