How to self study using MOOCS (Udemy, Coursera, and other online courses) | self study online

Hi friends! In this video, I go in depth on how to self study online using online courses and how to not give up like a third of the way in. If you have bought online courses and just never actuallly finished them, you are not alone. An average of only 10% of people actually finish an online course. And I was the 90% too before I developed and went through the process that I talk about in this video.
Be warned, this is a thorough discussion that isn't just tips and tricks - it's going to involve some introspection from you as well. I promise it's worth it though.

Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

That's right, but what if the only purpose you're learning the course for is money? Is It very wrong to earn money by learning helpful skills? I don't get it...I mean, I do love things and try to enrich and improve it, but sometimes, the motivation is money, am I right?

Tina - Loved the goal (x and y axis) graph that you described. Never thought of this. Your tip is equivalent to what James Clear says in his Atomic Habits - keeping a Habit Tracker Template. Both give you a way to measure yourself and see the metrics for yourself. Active retrieval from Ultralearning is also a useful tip. Thanks for such useful tips :-)

I think this is some really solid advice. 8:16 I think personally I would encourage persons while doing the course to come up with their own additional projects. It could be just a slice of the project or the entire thing (if small enough). Another tip is definitely looking at other people's code and reverse engineering any bits and pieces you like.

I am definitely an analog person as well, have started taking notes in Python as a way to learn it. Jupiter Notebooks makes it easy, plus it allows me to try the things they are going over as they do it. Great video. I will definitely be picking these books up!

Oh my God, I was just thinking that students who go to medical schools will always be a doctor, no buts. I read the description, and was shocked you're one of the very few medical students who don't want to work in the field of healthcare. I'm an IR graduate who's very sick of political science so I want to try out something different. I'm taking a lot of courses online (not as many as you think, but it's like I'm attending a college without interacting with a lecturer directly and self-paced courses mostly), and i've been enjoying them so far. i want to watch this video and ill add a note on my thought about this video.

Tina, I absolutely love your approach to data science. It looks very efficient and doable. Years ago, there were endless amounts of terrible advice. Most involved doing too many courses, books, etc. for hours on end without focusing on application/projects, getting a job, etc.. I tried learning Python 2 years ago but ended up quitting because it took too long to go through all the books/courses and get to a job-ready point. Now I realize a lot of it is just smoke and mirrors and that we all don't need to be perfect and understand everything 100% from the start. Now I realize I should have been focusing more on doing projects and less on finishing all the exercises in the books. Really appreciate you showing valuable knowledge that most people would hoard to themselves. Thank you!

Learn information and do something with it. Have a (good) reason for doing things. Some good reasons : Better your life tangibly. Having a reason and a goal serves as a motivation. Create your resources. Have a mentor in the field that is closer to you. Do projects, like drilling. Structure thoroughly and put things together visually. You like the instructor or the materials used. Create accountability. (Social accountability) Keep à compelling score board. Acquire a skill and not just complete a course. Skip the fluff. Sign up for interactive learning programs. (kaggle, etc) Learn flexibly and optimize. Take note on the main things, not copious notes. Keep the reference locations noted. Watch at 2x 3x speed. Pause seldomly to avoid a cut in learning. Do active recall to better synthesize info in your words, to better internalize.

I would suggest that if anyone would like to learn Java. You should use cave of programmers and Mooc Helsinki. Most of Moocs instructional videos are in finish and cave of programming allows for in depth analysis on most of the subjects
