Hi friends! In this video, I share with you guys how I take notes from start to finish. I love things that minimize effort and maximize outcome so my note taking also doubles as a way to speed up the learning process. It's also fast and efficient, but still easy to reference when I want to revisit the notes in the future. I hope you enjoy this video: How I take notes - Tips for efficient note taking that speeds up learning

About me
Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

I was a horrible note taker in college. I tried to write everything I heard so it was difficult retaining any information during lecture. Often times, I'd write a bunch of chicken scratch and couldn't even understand what I wrote or I'd forget what the professor just said so there'd be a huge gap in between note taking! Great tips!

I work in the same way since many years in all field. Also i studied trading 2 years fulltime. What i can give as a learning advice to learn faster is: 1. Make your self questions about what you learn. Just try to develope questions, and then explain them. This REALLY give your brain a benefit. 2. Try to explain it to your self in an 3 year old kid way. Only if you can do it with describing in easy words, then you really understood it. I am a scanner personality, and everything becomes very boring to me after i understood it. I learn all kind of things, from trading to electronics and so on, so i have to learn a lot, but this 2 points, helps me in my work as innovation-scientist to learn everything very fast - hope it helps you a lot :-)

Left handed, like myself. I have many great pen recommendations for lefties if you're interested (no smudging). I also find using a writing tool with which you "enjoy" writing makes you take better notes as well. I am currently working on changing the angle I hold both my paper and pen so I can write more efficiently as a side hobby.

The tip on countering FOMO-ness is spot on. I have this horrible horrible habit that I've developed since I started studying on university. And though digital note-taking is great...I personally find it (rather late too) that I remember what I wrote easier. It's the spatial locality in the system I guess. Thanks for sharing this Tina! Really eases my worry now that I'm going back to school and undertaking some hefty coding work that comes with it!

I had been an expert note taker when I was in school and even during college, but I guess the corporate culture and the ultra developed gadgets and apps kind of over powered this habit of mine within due course of time. I recently started taking notes again for my Google Data Analytics course. It seems weird at times since the videos itself provide tools to make notes then and there. Struggling hard to get back to my note taking days. One thing that really helped me back in school while I would take down notes is to mention a song or a dialogue of a movie after every topic, which would make it easier for me to get back to it for future reference. Weird and naive yet worked wonders for me. Will try and follow your tips to get back to it.

They're gel ink but can be erased by friction. They're my favorite note-taking/study utensils to use and come in variety of pretty colors. They do "erase" or "ghost" in extreme heat, but otherwise work really great for me :)

I am too and failed at math learning. It was years ago, before yt. What I remember is that the classes did not bring me anything because it was something like "today we do x" and the course began. I missed General context and I was always finding that there was differences between what is "marketed by the teacher" and the real content of the subject, and that the teacher was focusing on the technical point of the matter, not what made sense. So a high level point of view may be interesting instead of diving in rabbit hole, some sort of "controlled diving" instead.

5:01 Making a permanent section in my notes called "insights" might help quite a bit. Why I think this: Connections for present concept + priming for future learning. I will see progress on what used to be insights and I might see what I thought something could be useful for seeing how far I've come in my perspective and understanding that "use for browser ext.?" or "analagous to OS kernel?" or such could have developed and how even the way I might note insights could progress massively given more knowledge on a topic or just the fact of what my idea of something I would use it for would develop or change or if the insights actually do take me somewhere seeing it's sprout on paper would be awesome and I could be proud of that. 6:55 Nice camera effect made this slightly more interesting but not too distracting. I wonder if this could be used with animation.

Awesome video, and you should get 3x your subscribers just because you add time stamps on your vids ;__; thx I like how your own video structure is like your notes (high level concepts - explaning the different methods, your own insights - your own system etc and full examples - showing how you do it) - 2x awesome!! Tip: I notice you have some background white noise, and you may have added noise reduction to reduce it. You will get better audio if you speak just a tiny bit closer to the mic (but I see that you probably want to sit in a way so we can see you clearly instead of sitting close to the mic). Maybe it helps ^-^

I bought a Samsung Tab S6 lite mainly for this. Samsung's app note is great (can insert img, pdf, and even voice msgs on the note!!!). Been studying Japanese with it and math (+geometry) and its been wonderful. I would suggest you buy the case that allows you to "sit" the tablet, otherwise its quite difficult to write with the pen.

btw i've always been a defender of paper for studying and reading but istg I havent missed writting on paper since the tab. (and reading pdfs here isnt bad either, ofc a kindle would be better and the physical book even better, but my hands are quite sweaty and I dont have much space for books anyways so this is really really convenient)

Instead of iPad, what I recomend is buying a graphics pad if you have laptop or PC. Because everyone know iPad costs alot. Graphics pad is way cheap and have lot of options to choose. You are right Prathyusha! Even I bought a graphic tablet or so called pen tablet recently, I just started using it and it's better way to create notes and have much content and examples at a place. @Tina I hope you have seen this comment, it'll save you some money and give you enriched experience, although I really love Apple phones, ipad and laptops experience. It's really premium, still having good way to write notes is the point here. These graphic tablets prices range from $35 - $1000 or more as well, I'd suggest people to go for $40 one's, it gives a working area of approximately 6X4in and it's good enough for taking notes. If a person wants to use it for sketching, drawing I'm not sure which is best. But since I bought 9X6in size, I find it's better to go for 6X4 and have a king size notebook experience than have a A4 sheet experience. Hope this is helpful to people.

Im learning frontend and Im doing notes from the course. I will definitelly try out the active recall method. I think it might be super usefull. Especially after realizing that I am not able to remind myself some of the aspects that I covered 3-4 articles in the past, this might improve my memory and ability to "recall" knowledge back into my aware part of the brain. Also using a pencil is what I should try out. Since you can remove some parts when making a misstake makes your notes more clean when doing it this way. Im doing the references of where I can find more information about specific topic by drawing a magnifier icon after the some keywords. For example: *background-color* 🏸 (I know it is badminton, but I am draving a similar icon :P) This way I can improve about the certain, more complex part of the topic in a more specific way. Leaving blank left side is also what I has been doing. It is great idea to write down some details about the topic, or leave it for later notes when going back. Using 2 colors (1 for emphasizing things) is also what I've been doing and it is rly usefull later. It focuses your attention on those parts and makes it easier to remember. Thank you for the video. For me it was really helpfull. :-)

having an ipad for notes helps me so much with organising and keeping everything in one place! a cool thing about it is being able to take notes on professors’ presentations (some people print everything out and then take notes), so you don’t have overwhelming amounts of paper which can be mixed up and lost. i have the 7th gen ipad which is also much more affordable than the newer ones but is still really good for note taking

I wonder if it is possible to optimise it further using mind palace on top of this technique.

Hi Tina! I need a comment from an experienced person like you. Is 8gb macbook air m1 enough for Data Science? Or should I get a 16gb ram?

write your own notes expose yourself to material before learning 4:11-5:04 make analogies, diagrams to connect between topics well solve full examples for technical subjects watch a video at 1.5x without pausing too often or read under a time limit so you're forced to note down only the important points don't look at your notes and explain to yourself about what you just studied

That is the way to go for programming concepts. Only take notes for high level concepts.

Why didn't any of my teachers tell me this? No wonder I failed out of pre-school. Thanks, I'm gonna use this when I study engineering topics this summer. I want to try to be an electrical engineer even though My Bachelors is in Physics, so I dunno I'll see how that one turns out.

I really struggle with notes about math and CS (my background is in Philosophy). Everything seems to be important, every definition, every proof, every corollary. I hadn't still find a way to study it effectively. You did, but I really can't understand how to chosse what not to include when everything seems so important. This also make impossible to finnish any book because I end up almost re-writing it.

Math is hard for me because I easily lose the point losing myself on the details . You have to let them go at the beginning and do a layer learning keeping the point of the matter on focus. I recommend you math sorcerer and a "math map" to get the bigger picture before doing anything. And 90% of the enlightment is in the exercises, corrected one done 3 times, one with try and then correct, one without and then a third time with a chronometer to put things in "reflex" mode.

Finally people would realise the importance of taking notes. Would act as a booster for your learning curve. - Says a guy who wrote only 5 pages of notes of all subjects combined in his entire senior year of engineering 🤠🤠🤠
