I have seen those rock wool squares before still in the bigger sheet and thought they were too small for their respective cups but it makes perfect sense to just use 2 squares, I can't believe I didn't realize/notice that sooner. Thank you for the video.

Thanks for watching! They make them in larger sizes to use just one, but I find it easier to use two and it works out to the same price so I do it that way! 🤘

I tried that, but the Florida sun just burns the plants. So I have to do it inside (also cold here in winter)

Great vid! I’m in the middle of constructing an ebb flow system for growing plants so this was handy I picked up some tips. One question what is the Latin name of cardinal plant and is it an aquarium plant as I’ve never heard of it here in Australia. Regards Duzzy🇦🇺
@ssaquascapesАй бұрын
Duzzy, The cardinal plant is scientifically called Lobelia Cardinalis. It is an aquarium plant, both beautiful, emersed and submerged. When it is submerged, it will just be a light green color and grow more in stem fashion. If you trim it frequently, it will be a little bushier but it does want to grow up to the light quickly before spreading out as you saw in the video.

@ thank you I’ll get some to give it a go.

You point out all the benefits of emersed grown plants, but I have found that the only plants I have failed with are in fact emersed. Melting once submerged is a major problem with them and rarely do they come back once they melt (as all the "experts" try to say). When I purchase submerged grown they always thrive. Do you have a "secret" to converting the plants for less loss?
@ssaquascapesАй бұрын
I just let them be. I don’t change water like a madman (which the experts say to do on fresh tanks). I just let nature be nature. I change water once the algae begins to set in. Of course I don’t always have 100% success, but I have enough success to feel confident selling these species. Or maybe, it’s just my water🤷🏼♂️

The only luck I've ever had surviving emersed to submerged conversion is when the plant has a strong root structure, and I plant with extra root tabs. If you can get the roots established and growing quickly the leafy growth will come back. I'm not a fan of emersed for this reason. It's always a gamble.
@ssaquascapesАй бұрын
Agreed. Healthy roots are a must. (Did you see the roots on my plants?) 😛

New sub and great video! How often are you changing your water in your trays? For anubias or Java fern are you just keeping the rhizome above the rock wool or can that be inside? Thanks again!
@ssaquascapesАй бұрын
I change the water in the trays when I do my aquarium water changes, since I use the aquarium water as seen in the video. This schedule varies for me but I’d say the trays get some scum after 2 weeks and it would be a good time to change the water. For rhizome plants, I pinch the rhizome at the roots and it stirs on top of the rockwool. For these plants keep the water level higher (just below top of pot) or the roots can dry out. Hope that helps and thanks for the sub! 🤘

@@ssaquascapesthank you! If possible I’d like to see that process if possible for anubias or Java fern etc. Also, are you only keeping the lids on until all plants convert to emersed growth or do you leave them on to keep humidity level high?
@ssaquascapesАй бұрын
For mosses , lid on. For all others, lid on till new emersed leaves are seen, then lid off and trim wilted leaves the next day. This encourages new emersed leaves. Then propagate and you’re on your way to sustainability.

This is an excellent video and I'm looking to test this method. I've been growing my emersed plants in soil based on another video I found, but I'm finding they are taking a while to convert. Do you find they convert better to emersed using the rockwool / aquarium water method or if moist potting soil was to be used? Will the plants still grow if the temperature of the room they are in is around 70 F (21 C)? Also, have you tried converting any of these plants back to a submerged state and then selling them?
@ssaquascapesАй бұрын
I think the roots set in better when they are in water/Rockwool. I have tried aqua soil as well, and did not have the same success. Also, your local fish store wants it to be EASY for them. They don’t want to plant snippets from your stems. They want to drop pots in their tanks and sell them that weekend. I have gone from submerged to emersed and back to submerged before to test this method. I would not sell a plant that won’t convert back. If you’re looking to make decent money at this side hustle, I truly think this will be the way to go. Also, I have found that after initial set up, this is the most cost effective way to cultivate for long periods.
