Hey guys! So I was asked, "How do you sequence chords on the JP-08?" Well, I thought it would be a good subject for my very first tutorial video. ;) I have been wanting to do tutorial videos for awhile, but never got around to actually doing one... and after doing this one... I realized that they aren't very easy to do. lol Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy the video. Thanks for watching, littleBIGsynths :)

one of the best synth demos I've seen. so hard to find simplistic demonstrations on KZbin. I'm learning this kit, and at the same time been teaching my son, I feel like I need to watch hours of demos, read lots of guides and manuals and then translate that info to something my child will understand without his eyes glazing over. This is the kid of Demo a child can even understand. You have an incredible ability to teach to a beginner. Glad I found and subscribe to your KZbin channel. Thank you

my thoughts exactly, I've been wondering if this was possible for some time, but I had no idea how to verbalise it to be able to search for a demonstration. FINALLY found a demo explaining and showing its possible.

+Iesope Thank you very much! :) I am glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, I didn't even think about the dip switches on the back. :/ I have both switches set to the bottom position (internal) which means the Keystep is the Master clock. As far as the tempo goes... I don't have any way of knowing the exact tempo... unless I hook my gear up to my Electribe, which does display the tempo (BPM).

Outstanding video. Thanks. Glad to have subscribed . . . would love more tutorials, maybe a piece or two about how you develop a musical idea in one of your hardware sessions. I’m ready to stop mostly collecting synths and make more music, but I don’t always know where to start. Then I listen to your sessions and mini-jams and despair a little. How does one begin? My little jams sound cheesy and repetitive :-(

littleBIGsynths Cool that’s good to hear. I’m torn. I go back and forth between wanting a BeatStep now, or save my money for a BeatStepPro, or just go with the Keystep which has an arpeggiator. Can’t decide and don’t have room for more than one, and I already have a keyboard controller so the BS feels like an alternate. On the other hand having proper keys is a big plus for sequencing. Agh. Analysis paralysis

@littleBIGsynths
@littleBIGsynths 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Glad you found it useful. 🙂 Are you trying control the vKeys via MIDI? Just set both dip switches to the bottom position. This will set the Keystep as the Master clock. From there, you will need to match the Keysteps MIDI channel to the Volca Keys channel. So if the Volca Keys is set to channel 1, then set the keystep to channel 1. It should work after that. Hope this makes sense. 🙂

Excellent observations.🙂 The PO12 output is going to my audio mixer. The USB from the Keystep is used for power. It can be powered either by a dedicated power supply or a USB cable connected to pretty much any power source that has USB. Very handy. Mine is hooked up to a cell phone charger in this video, but you can even hook it up to a portable battery pack (the ones used for cell phones.) 👍

The only work around I've found for this is to: Create and use an empty sequence when sequencing with the Keystep. I had the same issue for awhile, but this works for me. Hopefully this will work for you as well. :)

ok, I just did it. It's interesting to work too, with the two sequencer ju06 and keystep together, the two are well synchronized. I just begin with boutique and keystep..

Thank you for sharing this... but how to play seq when in EXternal clock? Is it possible ?
@littleBIGsynths
@littleBIGsynths 7 жыл бұрын
+DrSurfreak :) So you want to have another device as the master clock? Instead of the Keystep? If so, you just need to change the settings on the back of the Keystep. There is a pair of switches to change the Keystep from master to slave.
@DrSurfreak
@DrSurfreak 7 жыл бұрын
I've tried.. ableton live as a master... I've set the back pin to midi and this isnt the problem... but How manual says "The sequencer will not run if the sync selection switches are set to something other than Internal and no external clock is present." HAve you ever tried? Thanks

+DrSurfreak so are you sending MIDI over USB or through a MIDI cable?

tried both.. Keystep starts when Live starts but seems that I can't record a sequence

The ju-06 is polyphonic? Didnt know that, if it really is it will probably be my next piece if gear
@littleBIGsynths
@littleBIGsynths 6 жыл бұрын
+cyrill a. The JU-06 is a 4 voice polyphonic synth! :D It is miniaturized recreation of the vintage, Roland Juno 106. You can definitely get some nice, rich sounds out of this little synth. ;)

Press Shift, and button Kbd (for keyboard play) to play over sequence... but it depends on how many voices synth has... if it only has 4voices like this Ju-06 then you need to record it onto something else to be able to chords over them...

Why dont you have the jp-08 any more? do you like ju-06 better?
@littleBIGsynths
@littleBIGsynths 6 жыл бұрын
+D Londono :( I got rid of it to find other gear... I do miss it though. It was a great synth. I had to decide between the JU-06 and JP-08 and ended up keeping the JU06. The Ju06 is a bit more "lush" sounding and very straight forward when it came to programming patches. The JP08 had a lot more features, but sometimes sounded a bit harsh and harder to find a "sweet spot." It's all a matter of preference really... and if I could afford all of the gear I wanted without having to sell anything... I would definitely have held on to it. :/ lol

John Oakes 14 minutes ago How does someone with no experience get the Arturia keystep to work in Windows 10....Not a single video on youtube to show how this installs and works in windows. Right now I have a $118 paper weight. The users manual is useless unless your an experienced user. I just want to make some noise...Why things have to be so difficult? This should be plug and play or step by step instructions on getting this to work in windows....Any help or a video on the subject would be helpful....thanks in advance.

you stepped in the wrong puddle if you want plug and play... lol. this is the world of synths not videos games. this keystep will plug into a midi synth and play immediately... you need software to make a sound and and education to know what you want to do... you sound like a whiney child that wants to drive daddy's car making a comment like plug and play. get a clue and some patience.

Why do you set the gate time to 25%?
@littleBIGsynths
@littleBIGsynths 7 жыл бұрын
+UncleJimima Hey! :) So, the gate time was initially set for demonstration purposes mostly. With the short gate time, you can get short sounding chords that you could hear being played along with the kick drum.

littleBIGsynths thanks for the reply! I soon found that out after experimenting with my equipment. I come from the world of stringed instruments, but just became obsessed with this "little big synths" world, so I'm still pretty new to all this, but I'm learnin'... slowly...

I did not see when you show how to add length to a note, to have a note that hold for a quantity of step: if you don't know, create a sequence hold a note then tap rest !!!
