Thank you for this tutorial! I had made a skirt and put the elastic in a casing, which did NOT work very well as the elastic kept turning. Plus, I got a serger recently and I need to learn to use it. Following the tutorial, I was able to redo the skirt with a sewn-in stable elastic waist.

Such clear concise instructions I've never considered doing it this way but tomorrow I'm going to try it on some culottes I'm making and best of all no annoying music in the background so you miss what you're supposed to be doing I love my overlocker and use it for so much I have a800DL Bernina I treated myself to 6 years ago with a win on a competition the gentleman delivered and set it up for me showed me and made me completely rethread it which I found quite daunting at first but as the saying goes practice makes perfect I'm about to treat myself to a second overlocker as I've just had another little win on a competition and a bit of a refund from the tax man .I have a dedicated room for my sewing and have a adjustable height banquet table for my sewing machines and overlocker and a second adjustable height banquet table for cutting out my fabrics

Good luck! Narrow elastic can be fiddly. And don’t forget to not stretch the fabric after you’ve started sewing. Hold it still! Stretch, hold, sew. Once you’ve stopped sewing readjust and repeat. You’ll do great!

This is the exact method I've been searching for, for at least a year and a half. I was pleased to hear your suggestion about what to do if your fabric is longer than what your elastic c ac n stretch. I have a pair of pants I'm sewing now, and, the fabric is indeed longer than the elastic will stretch. I'm not sure how to shorten it, so, I may just have to somehow bunch it up in the sewing I do. Oh dang. I know exactly what you mean. This method is done in factories and it’s always worked for me. It doesn’t matter that we’re using a straight stitch since it gets stretched. If you want that twin needle look you could always stitch it twice. Nobody will know 😉

I don’t like the bulk from sewing the elastic by overlapping the ends. I zigzag one end to a small piece of fabric, then, abutting the two ends, zigzag the second side. Fold the fabric over the raw edges and zigzag to secure.

Whatever works for you. I only use braided elastic and since I’m serging it to the garment it’s not bulky.

Oh this method is perfect for pajama pants! I sew on a Juki 8700-7. I have video all about it if you’re interested I can link. It’s pretty bitty gritty about using it and it’s features and compares it to a similar model.

This is awesome! Beautiful quality work! I have several skirts and pants I like too much to donate, but the elastic bands inside are twisting. I have a sewing machine, but I don’t know how to use it yet. I can sew by hand really well. Can you make a video on how to fix rolling waistbands already cased from clothing bought in a store?

That’s the worst when the elastic twists! You can definitely hand sew. I’m happy to make a video but honestly waiting for me may take a while. So here’s what I suggest- at each seam of your pants like the center front, center back, and each side seam, do your best to wrangle the elastic flat inside the casing. Then tack it through all layers with some hand stitches. If you keep the stitches on top of the seam they won’t be very noticeable. And It’ll help the elastic stay flatter inside. Hopefully you don’t have to open up the casing to get it to lay flat! Good luck!! May all your elastic waistbands lay flat!

This machine doesn’t have that option I think… I can’t remember. But even though my current machine has that feature I feel like I’m in a fast moving maze without the knife. Like anything can happen! But you can definitely drop your knife to sew it on. ☺️
