You’ve got a ton of knowhow. Moreover, you’re a great teacher. Through your video I “salvaged” a couple pair of long underwear by sewing in a new elastic waist. I’m a guy who inherited a sewing machine from my mom and began experimenting with it. Great machine. It’s similar to using woodworking tools only the medium is different--wood vs. fabric. My issue is always wanting to remove the elastic from waistbands. Do you have any tricks for removing elastic that is sewn in like this?

No real tricks, unfortunately. Just a lot of patience in taking out all the little stitches. I find any tricks, I will share them! Thanks for watching!

Having bare elastic from the inside looks very unfinished. If I did that method for other people , boy I’m sure I’d hear about it. I would never do this to my own pants. I’m glad it works for you.

I agree: it does look very unfinished! As I say in the video, for a customer, I would do it very differently. The purpose here is just to get a little more wear out of my own rather worn-out pajama or workout pants and help others (especially newer sewers) to do the same. I don't mind the unfinished look on the inside for myself. Maybe I'm a little too frugal! :) Thanks for watching and commenting!

Also, I recently threw away a swimsuit where the leg elastics had given up. I had thought at the time that I should use it as a learning experience to see if I could just sew an elastic on top, just like you've done here. I don't remember why I decided it would be too challenging. Could you please do a video on it?

Isn’t that going to be scratchy against the skin, having the elastic exposed like that?

It doesn’t really bother me, but it might bother people with sensitive skin. You can also buy soft waistband elastic that feels a little better than the regular stuff. I hope that helps!

Do you think you've gotten a feel for how much to stretch the elastic through experience? I wonder if I should pin it at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock first, since I don't really have that feel yet.

That would be really hard to hand sew! They do have some inexpensive machines in the low $100 range that work really well. Or you could always borrow a friend's machine if they don't mind! Thanks for watching!

Nope! I just use a regular straight stitch of about 3-3.5 stitch length. Hope that helps!
