You definitely can replace a timing chain or belt with the engine in the vehicle. Yes, a timing belt and a timing chain are the same thing. Some engines gave belts, and others have chains. Some heavy-duty engines just have gears. I am a HD Cummins Diesel engine technician and they all have gears. I removed this engine because I wanted to replace the pistion rings and reseal the engine. Also, to paint firewall, frame, and engine block. I will post videos on the rebuild of the 360 engine and the 1986 ramcharger. Thank you for your comment.

Definitely alot easier. You can tell if there's play to investigate or if it's not an issue.

Back in the day, that's exactly how a local shop identified that my car had a bad timing chain.

Ok..The only way to check a timing chain and sprockets is to take timing cover off for inspection..Please use 1/2 inch socket set on crankshaft bolt.....

Redseal certified shade tree guy here. I have to agree that the correct tool for the job would be a socket. The rusty channel locks worked pretty well to check the play in the chain without the belt pully on? I guess you know a better way to check a timing chain. If you do, leave it in a comment.
