How to set up a GoPro for track days [4K]

Today I'm going to show you the optimal settings for recording track day and driving videos using a GoPro HERO5 Black... and my over-engineered camera mount system in a Porsche Cayman GT4.

Quick and to the point, great video! Mind telling me where you connect the cable to have continuous power? Also, have you ever connected the GoPro to RaceChrono maybe with the OBDII thing to have the video synced with the car infos in overlay?

I bought a hero 7 black tonight and your 10 seconds on how to re,I've the cover for charging was a blessing like you have no idea. NO videos explain this and even some explaining how to buy a water proof case and sawing off with drills the capped area.

I have an Abarth 124 Spider, and I want to take footage from the camera from all sorts of angles, but I also want to record the exhaust noises with an external microphone. Any idea for the right gear and setup? I will need an extra long cable for the micro I suppose?

Thanks for the video. Is there any reason you didn't just use a stick on GoPro mount on the flat part of the Manfrotto clamp? Then you wouldn't need to buy the stud or tripod mount.

This is very usefully video, I like the over engineering bit, funny. I bought Gopro 3, I found the battery usage is a joke, first trackday forgot turn off the camera after first session, battery died... And the touch screen from the back for Gopro 5 also seems very useful.

Running out of battery in the middle of a track session is not fun. Hooking up the GoPro to a power source is a must.

I will try Garmin Virb 30 in my GT4 this weekend. I was wondering what to use as clamp. Thx for the hint. I bought the ND filter kit as well for a better view of outside. Will post the results later. After that next step is to use ODB2 bluetooth connector to overlay the parameters to the video.

The Inner Driver Yes i have. But the Garmin Virb has some crazy sensor stack that i wanna try out. But amazon.de didnt deliver the Manfrottos today. I need to try out next weekend. I am planning to at Hockenheim in August with pistenclub.

I usually use the Track Precision App only for the data, then overlay the video of the GoPro (or other cameras) later. I'm thinking of doing a tutorial video on that. Have fun at Hockenheim! If all goes well, I might also be able to do a track day there a bit later 🙂

Hello innerdriver, I was stuck by your explanation of spot metering control it is awesome ! I have a hero 6 black and use Quik or GoPro app for adding speed but on open road GPS signal can be low so I am looking in direction of HLR (Harry's Lap timer) I hope I can use my GoPro for video and an Obd Bluetooth device for speed and rpm , do you use it ? Regards

Hi, I haven’t used HLR to overlay the GoPro video, but I think one of the paid versions supports it. You will have to first import the video onto the phone.

Does anyone know if you can setup this spot metering through the gopro app on your phone with the camera paired to it? The way my camera is setup in my car I can't really set the spot metering via the cameras display easily since it's hatch mounted. If I open the hatch where I would have access to the screen it's no longer pointed at the windscreen.

How is the sound quality on the gopro inside the cabin? I'm going to track my Cayman gts for the first time should I do an external mic setup or the gopro mic is decent enough.

If it is set to never off, wouldn’t it over record on the sd card? Or if you turn off your car when you park between sessions, wouldn’t the camera turn off and you will have to reset the exposure?

I usually turn off the camera whenever I end a session, and turn it on again when I get back into the car.

Altimatic it's best to use an external mic covered with "dead cat hair". I run an external mic adapter on my hero5 and the mic is set between the trunk and rear bumper. Listen to one of my videos and you'll hear how great it sounds...

Instead of using spot metering, which resets each time you power up, what about setting EV Comp to -2.0? That way you can see out of the windshield without being washed out, and it doesn't change each time you power up. I'm asking, not telling you. I thought that the Hero 5 didn't record while charging? Does it just charge then while it's not recording, or did you find a way around this?

It could be that it doesn't charge while it's recording. I don't know for sure. However, the battery is enough to keep it running for a track session which lasts for roughly 30 minutes.
