I own a 1966 pup tent that I bought NOS from a dealer who got it from the US government back in 1986. ! It's a serious bit of kit !! Can't wait to get it broken in on my 2024 camping trip ! Great video by the way !!✌

You made hard work of that with two of you. Peg out one side, three pegs, then fit the front/rear tent pole and peg the guy line. Peg out the opposite side, three pegs, then fit and peg the remaining tent pole.

Used one of these pup tens in the Army, and have had a surplus one I have used ever since. You guys have come up with what might be the most difficult and least efficient way of setting one up. I set mine up alone in half the time it takes both of you to struggle through it. Amusing video, though.

This couldn't have come at a better time! I just ordered a pup tent for D-Day, and had no idea how to set it up. Thanks!

@@iamsteverogersakacapamerica041 I ordered it from What Price Glory. It has the correct WW2 hardware, and only one flap, which is correct. I haven't been able to set it up yet, but it seems really good!

It was better to stake it down first as originally planned. It seemed unnecessary to hold it in place, just stake down.

I went into the Army in 72 at Ft Dix NJ, they took us to the range for three days and gave us pup tents. My buddy and I were the only ones with camping experience. The tent went up in no time. I tapped the DI on the shoulder to ask if he liked it. He did a double take because the tent looked like sheet metal! Slept well .

"Regulation method" tbh son, as long as u get it up and doesn't fall down, that's all that matters. I have a civil war pup tent, wwii pup tent and the style you have here. It's amazing how little changed in 100 years of the pup tent.

With the snap style shelter half, in the Marines, we were taught that the guy lines were only long enough to stake out the guy line and the shelter half ends as one and the guy line is snapped in between the rows of snaps on the end of the hooch that you were not using as the entrance. And put a little CLP weapons oil in the snaps so they snap together easily with no binding.

Nobody here seems to know the best method of all time. Snap the top center seam together, lay it completely flat with all 4 wings pointing straight out. Stake 1 half on the 3 loops along the straight. Take 2 of the 6 poles pieces, go to the pole grommets and stick the single section of pole in it. Pull it into a standing position, flipping towards the set stakes. Continue to lay it flat creating an overlap that will be 1 pole section long. Stake the 3 other loops. Now you can retrieve your 2 poles sections from the overlap and install the 2 assembled poles. Tie guy lines to temporary stake points. Snap the wi is together and install the stakes. On the closed end undo the guy line stake, then run the guy line through the snaps between the fabric layers and tie it to the wings stake, this eliminates 1 trip Hazzard. Go the the open end and partially stake both of the loops, make sure to leave the side you want to use as a flap closer to the head of the stake. Once the stake is most of the way down slip it off the stake and finish setting the stake. Adjust walls as needed.

Terminology boys! It's not a pop tent it's a hooch, or hoochie. And those what you are using to construct your hoochie are shelter halves. Remember it's the little things in life.

Yes, I think it started being called that during Vietnam. I'm not sure about Korea. Prior, it was called a pup-tent/shelter half. Please, if I am wrong, let me know.

@@reenactmentdays5891 Reenactment groups allow them? I got two I believe they’re ‘75 dated, $16 a piece but I thought that wouldn’t work for an event given the historical in accuracy. Is it allowed because originals are hard to find and reproductions aren’t made? Aside from ATF insanely priced $1k-$2k repros.
@reenactmentdays5891
@reenactmentdays5891 2 жыл бұрын
@@cadennorris960 what price glory has decent repros and good prices but they are the open door kind. Many people use the snap button tents, they look identical other than the buttons and if you don't know the minor details of every little thing they won't know the difference. The public most likely doesn't know the difference so they are fine

@@reenactmentdays5891 Thanks for the quick reply. I should’ve watched the whole video before commenting. From what I understand now the darker OD color was used for later war? All this time I assumed the OD3 ones were the only ones issued during ww2.

The Shelter Half, Revolutionary War technology, still issued...well at least it was in the 80's 🤣 Sucks in every possible way. In a storm, especially a sand storm it's better than nothing but overall they suck.

No floor sewn/stitched into the tent? Who the hell would sleep in a snake-infested jungle in that? No thank you. A few ounces of rubber impregnated fabric and some thread would go a long way.
@jackofalltrades7822
@jackofalltrades7822 9 ай бұрын
I slept in one many times when I was in the Army. To do it correctly you use dirt to seal up the bottom. A floor adds weight and makes it harder to pack. The way this works is 2 soldiers or marines carry half the tent each and cut down on he weight and bulk you have to carry.
