That heart rate of 50-60% of max for long slow distance running mentioned in the video is far too low in my opinion. For most people that go out and try and run at 50-60% of their max, they will be power walking. Running is the best tool to build a big aerobic base, and the heart rate that you want to get closest to without exceeding can be calculated approximately using the Phil Maffetone equation, which is 180-age. If you're a 30 year old athlete your target HR will be approx 150, or approx 80% of the average 30 year olds max. You can alternatively use .77 x max HR if you know your max. Phil also mentioned tempo runs. These runs are done at a heart rate where the body is right at the point where it can just clear the lactate that is building up as fast as it is being produced. Tempo runs over time increase your anaerobic threshold, basically the amount of work you can do before your body must switch to anaerobic metabolism. The aerobic base is the most important thing to build and is the foundation that your anaerobic ability launches off. Slow easy running is the best way to build that aerobic engine. This is best done with the use of heart rate monitor, but generally if you can't breathe through your nose when you're running, then you're going too fast for that aerobic base building work. With tempo runs, they should feel "comfortably hard". Primal Endurance by Mark Sisson is a great book to read regarding aerobic training etc.

Mr. Daru, Is stamina training for Muay Thai similar to boxing or MMA? Just wondering because I know MT has a stand up grappling component as well. If you have done a video on this already lemme know please! Thank you.

Hey coach! Love the content. In previous videos I have seen you implement conditioning in the way of battleropes 10sec on/1 min shadow boxing as active recovery for about 8-10 rounds. This would be considered a-lactic capacity yes? And the 10 seconds is max effort?

Hi Coach, What about the lactic capacity and power in Boxing ? aren't they used also ? or is it negligible ? Great work as always !
@PhilDaruStrong5 жыл бұрын
Prince Amir not a ton of lactic build up as in the form of local muscle fatigue unless shoulders get fatigued in that case yes work that in but mostly need to increase mitochondrial density

I've been going to the track...run for 3 min 1 min rest...then 4 100yrd sprints with 1min rest in between...I'll do 4 sets...at least 1 time a week usually Sunday morning...question???? cortisol gets released doing long steady state cardio...and decreases testosterone levels...so is this method I'm using adequate??? also I'll push the sled 4 times for 40 yrds to smash the glutes and quads

Hey coach. On the 2 minutes passive, 2 minutes active portion of the rest do we need to keep our heart rate above a certain point during the active portion of that rest? For example if during the active portion of the rest I drop to 40% do I need to increase the activity to push it back up a bit?

Hi Phil, hoping you can help me understand this better. In a Aerobic Power video you did you recommended we work at about 80-85%, but in this video you recommend 60-70%. Is there a reason for that? Trying to find the optimal way. Thanks
