Hey Rich, Love the videos. A good tip i learned for setting the Valve lash on an inline 6 motor, which may help you save a bit of time on your Lash jobs, Basically, when you set the Motor to TDC1, Both of the cylinder 1 valves are on their base circle, In addition, The intake valves on Cylinders 2 and 4, and the Exhaust Valves on 3 and 5 are also on their base circles, so you can adjust those at the same time. The Name we used to remember it was "Intake Exhaust, Intake, Exhaust, Intake, exhaust" when counting cylinders 1-5 (or backwards from 6-2 when you are on TDC6) and it makes it possible to complete the valve adjustment while only having to change position to rotate the engine twice. (this mostly came in handy while working in Busses or RV's where you could not rotate the engine and access the Valves without having to get out of the bus) Keep up the good Debauchery
@samjohnson16767 жыл бұрын
Additionally, if you use the alternator bolt to rotate the engine, Turn in Counter Clockwise (backwards) to load up the belt tensioner and prevent slippage

On a 4 cylinder engine, if you set no. 1 piston at TDC at the end of compression stroke you can do no. 1 exhaust and intake, no. 2 exhaust and no. 3 intake valves. Turn the engine 360 degrees (1 full turn) and now no. 4 piston is at compression tdc and you can do no. 2 intake, no. 3 exhaust and no. 4 intake and exhaust.

easy way to remember which cylinder you have to set, you always have to come to one more than you engine has. So if you got a 6 Cylinder you have to get to 7, if number 3 is in between exhaust and air intake you have to set 4 (4+3=7) same for 4 you have to get to 5 so if 1 is cutting cylinder 4. Sry for my bad english hope you understand it

You could also find top dead center on the compression stroke on number one (often I take a really long zip tie and put it down the spark plug or injector hole. Most engines have a timing mark on the front of the engine to find TDC on the compression stroke to reference engine timing), adjust both valves, because this is a 6 cylinder, turn the crank 120 degrees (one third of a revolution) and follow the firing order. In this case cylinder 5 will be at top dead center on the compression stroke and all the valves will be closed. Same for a V8 except you turn the engine 90 degrees at a time. 180 degrees for a 4 cylinder and so forth. Take the number of cylinders, divide by 2 (because these are 4 stroke engines) and then take 360 (number of degrees an engine rotates) and divide it by that number. So, 6 cylinders/2= 3. 360/3=120. There maybe faster or easier ways to do it, but this way you know for sure you're on the base circle of the cam and all valves will be adjusted in 2 (or less) rotations of the engine.

I have found that almost all 6 cylinder engines can be set as follows. When the #1 cylinder is on TDC, you can adjust intake valves 124 and exhaust valves 135. Rotate the engine 360 degrees, now you can set intake valves 356, and exhaust valves 246. On engines that require the injectors to be adjusted you either need to adjust them as you bar the engine, some types of injectors you can set half of them on #1tdc and the other half on #6tdc.

This is a great video. However, I have a question and would greatly appreciate it if someone could help. We adjust the valves when the rocker arms have a little bit of free play. I use a filler gauge to adjust the valve clearance with the arm pulled away from the valve in its free play, and when I remove the gauge the arm goes down and touches the valve at a point (the gap looks good at most points though). Is this fine or should the clearance be adjusted when the rocker arm is nearest to the valve in its free play? I have a single cylinder if it is important.
@AllNightTNT5 жыл бұрын
Roshan Adhikari I’m wondering the same thing. Maybe we’re being neurotic but on this motor I do also notice how the rocker arm sides a bit from side to side and the clearance changes by a small amount. So which position of rocker arm do you adjust for

I've got a 4bt in a f150 and trying to adjust the valve lash correctly. When describing the firing order 1342 is 2 the front cylinder nearest radiator? or is 1? I want to be sure I'm positioning the numbers to the correct cylinders instead of getting it backwards. By the looks of it when you were explaining ''rotating the engine by hand'' (on the 6BT) I seen that 4 is the front cylinder but I had to replay the video multiple times to make sure I had the firing order lined up with the cylinder positions. Just want to be sure I've got it right and I am understanding correctly. Thanks for the videos keep them up!

+cedicol The easiest way to know is pop off your valve cover. If there is a lock nut with an adjustment screw, then they are adjustable. If there is no adjustment screw, then it will have a hydraulic lifter. As of yet, I have not seen a hydraulic lifter on a diesel but that is just my experience.

There's some bad info here. First, the gap is there to correctly time the valves duration. Yes, that gap does erode with temp BUT it does NOT come close to closing a 10thou and certainly not 20thou distance. In reality there's really not a whole lot of difference...maybe a couple of thou at most...between hot and cold iron. IF you want to remain consistent, keep a magnet nearby and drag the feeler on it then set the valve. Aim to get that drag every single time.
