I backup my iPhone to my Mac, so in the past I've plugged my new iPhone into the Mac and let it setup from that backup instead of using iCloud. I've also used the iPhone to iPhone cable connection method as well. Both are very much faster than using local Wi-fi and restore from iCloud.

You really can use a cable to directly connect 2 iphones together, right? Its so weird; I see apple's official support article on it, but virtually nobody talks about it online... I guess just nobody knows or cares? Everyone uses icloud?? I'm going to try the cable tonight I think....!!!

Backup is still in progress for 12 hours.. I can't use both phones for 12 hours.. I don't know if I should give up or just leave it.

Sounds like you did a direct migration? You could cancel it. The new phone will go through a reset progress and you will have to start again. The. You could do a full iCloud backup and go that route. Or use a Mac or PC to backup and restore the new iPhone from that.

I am still a little fuzzy one switching my E-sim card going from a 14 PM to a 16 PM i am in Canada so do i have to put my old card in the new phone physically or is it done via E-sim ? thx for your video i will be using it when my phone arrives and do i just throw my E-si, card in the trash ? cheers from Vulcan Canada

actually, the best way to do is just back up your important data (not photo and video files), then setup your new iphone as new. if you use the same apple id as the old iphone, it will automically restore the same apps and data to the new iphone. you just need to manually setup your cellular connection after the initial setup completion.

Thanks for this! I've done it a bazillion times but it's always nice to review the process while waiting for my new iPhone to arrive. I especially appreciated the advice to restore from iCloud--which would not have been my instinctive choice--because I needed to get up an running in short order so I would have a functioning iPhone when leaving for an appointment.

for some reason every time i tried migrating it it says “Unable to Complete Data Transfer” and I tried the icloud backup method and it doesn’t seem to work either. I’ve never had this problem what should I do?

May want to try backing up to Mac or windows and restoring from there.

be aware about the size of your data from the old iphone. it will take a long if you have a lot of photo and video files during the transfer.

@@JerrySchulze yeah no it was too crazy for me so I cancelled it and the phone reset itself back to factory and now I’m doing a restore from my laptops encrypted back up hoping that the laptop will be faster than iCloud. We’ll see. This also frees up my old phone so I’m not without a phone for 12+ hours.

@@JerrySchulzei have done it too. it took about 7 hours on my new iphone 16 pro max using iphone to iphone data transfer. my photo and video files were about 200 GB size. yes, i was not able to use my old iphone during the transfer. my old iphone had 512 GB storage space.

If you are transferring a phone with a SIM card to the 16 that has a eSIM, side by side wireless from cell data will not transfer. Need to call the carrier……

For the big carriers in the US, that is not accurate. Smaller MVNO carriers may not work without calling carrier or using their apps n

That is normal and would happen with any device.

I only say this because the video makes it seem once you copy your phone over you are good to go but you really do need to put in some work after its done....
