How to Setup Alexa with LG 4K Ultra HD Smart LED ThinQ TV

Thank you so much I tried setting this up on my TV 12 times and failed. I was logging into my LG account instead of Amazon under the skills which I believe was causing me my issues. I didnt notice the Amazon login option before. Works great now except when I say Alexa, set my TV to channel 25 all I get is TV isn't responding.

SOLUTION TO LAUNCH YOUR LG APPS: To get Alexa to launch Apps on your LG TV, it requires different phrasing than all the other commands. You have to tell her to *ask LG* to do it. So for example: To launch the Prime Video App, say “Alexa tell LG to launch Prime Video on [my TV]” (or whatever your TV is named). Same goes for Netflix and any other app. I just tested it and it works.

Whenever I try this, like launching Spotify, the TV just says searching for apps and shows the installed Spotify app for me to select with the remote -it doesn't launch it automatically. Any ideas?

Just FYI...that link is dead now. It redirects to Google Assistant help, no Alexa compatibility. BTW, I found the solution to your problem of not being able to get Alexa to launch your LG apps on the home menu. I posted the solution below, in the comments.

I managed to setup my samsung series 7 tv today and I had to download the smart things app and then link it to Alexa. It also works with Google home as well. I can turn my tv on from both devices. .

To launch an app you have to say "ask LG to launch KZbin on my TV" the ask LG part I think makes sure it's using the TV ap and not like a fire stick

Here's how to get it to turn on (from LG support and it actually worked: 1) Turn your TV off. 2) Unplug it from the outlet. 3) Press and hold the power button on the TV for 15-20 seconds. 4) Wait for one minute and then plug your TV back into the outlet.Tell Alexa to turn your TV on.

Good vid. But please note viewers that your LG tv may not have the Webos tab even if it is a webos tv. The 8 series tvs were shipped to some countries without the app and it can't be installed. Why companies do this I have no idea. surely it isn't a rights issue in this case but who knows. I know this is the case with New Zealand models. Amazon has good info on which countries models were shipped with the app. The 9 series I think, were shipped with the app or automatically connect.

Your LG TV must support webos 4.0 in order to support this feature. Find out in your TV Settings >General>About this TV. My LG TV has webos 3.8. Not sure what the alternative is? Maybe an Amazon Fire Stick?

Jordan Mercado: I don’t think that was her problem. She was using the wrong phrasing. For some weird reason, Alexa can’t launch them herself; she has to ask *LG* to do it. I posted the exact phrase in a separate comment. PS: she clearly had the right webOS version or it wouldn’t have linked in the first place, and Alexa wouldn’t have been able to turn the TV off/on, switch inputs, or change volume. TVs under version 4 can’t use Alexa at all.

Hmm very nice tutorial thanks! For me the volume up down does not work, switching channels does not work, only on / off and switch input to HDMI1 works or playing music on TV. Too bad, wished I could use it like you, switching channels and controlling the volume :( - I have a LG7370 Smart 4k with Alexa - so it's compatible... what am I doing wrong that only some commands work? I had this problem as well. Then I updated the tv and a new option appeared in settings/connections. It is voice control. Once I did that I could suddenly do everything. Now I just want to know why I have to say "Alexa, ASK LG to turn volume down on tv" The video had simple voice commands but I have to add ASK LG like a game of Morher May I

I just enabled everything now. In late 2019 I am able to turn the TV on with voice commands. However, I'm also having problems with launching apps via voice command. My Echo just says "I couldn't find any enabled video skills. Please enable video skills & devices." When i go to the TV & Video section of the settings I see a list of apps but no mention of LG TV or Netflix. I'm at a loss because when I first connected the TV to the Echo the example commands on-screen showed launching Netflix as a possible command.

And I wasn't able to connect my Echo Dot to my Tv even though I can control my Tv through my Echo Dot. When I try adding my Echo Dot to my TV in the Alexa app it just says it couldn't find any Alexa's devices and that I should use the same account on both Alexa (tv) and my Echo, lol. Of course I did.

"Turn on" is not available because when the TV is off it's not connected to the internet, so Alexa can't find the device. There's an RF transmitter that works with Alexa, it works like an universal controller, I got one that can turn on my TV, Home Theater and other devices

If your tv has quickstart+ (settings - general- additinal settings - quickstart+) then yes. 2019 models seems to have it and it works for mine now.

Hi Caroline, I did follow your tutorial and it worked perfectly. However, after a few months, my LG Smart TV does not want to respond to Alexa whenever I command it to TURN ON. It does however respond when I command it to TURN OFF. I did try to disconnect my Eco Dot and reinstall but it still does not want to TURN ON. What might be the issue here?

The LG ThinQ app use to change channels for your topbox (AT&T, Uverse, etc), but stops working. 😤 however it does work if you use LG’s live TV. I hope LG fixes this Buggy App soon. However I do like the feature to listen to TV using your smartphone and wireless earbuds.
