I am so pleased by your entire video. Your pleasant speaking voice, well researched information and validation by adequate, ample personal experience and great explanatory video settles this matter of discouraging obnoxious raiding squirrels forever in my opinion. The only reason to watch anyone else's video on same is because they are fun to watch. Some of it pretty convoluted. Innocent fun. But, you nailed it ! Awesome sir! P.S. Other solutions may be necessary due to back yards that just don't have the room for 9' of clearance around the feeder and perhaps too many leaping structures within range of the feeder.

Found this video very interesting as I was trying to set up a bird feeder hanging from a tree. Soon I found they can easily jump 6ft span and was wondering what is the limit. Your video not only showed various entertaining aspects of how squirrels get on the feeders but also clearly showed what really works without all the "Rube Goldberg" contraptions out there on the web. Thanks for sharing your wonderful experiments with backyard nature's cretures

I am in Colorado and these squirrels are gray squirrels…they look just like the squirrels you have in Louisiana. I had a pole feeder with baffle. I was told to keep feeders 10 ft from jumping point. The best I could do was 9 1/2 feet. That worked for 9 1/2 years. but now they can make the jump from 6t board fence to feeder. I am planning on putting chicken wire piece on top of fence jump off point. Moving the feeder would move it out of view from house, so I couldn’t watch the birds.

That’s awesome brother! I gave up trying to keep the squirrels away. Then I decided to save the seeds from my finches. I would throw out the uneaten seeds when I fed them in the morning. I decided to save them instead of throwing them out because they only eat certain seeds. Then I filled my feeder with those leftovers! Guess what? The squirrels don’t like them and leave them alone! The birds love them! Oh yeah!

@jimcan9914 Жыл бұрын
Good one... It seems all our local tree rats also have supernatural powers. (determination) The nice commercial, rounded baffles work pretty good. I make a Coolie hat out of Alu and discovered that a PVC pipe cap at the top means the little bugger cannot hold onto the hang wire and reach the end of the disk,. Prior, mine would hold the wire with one back foot, lean the cap and grab onto the mesh feeder. Press on - there's a war to be won! Jim

I loved your video. Can you tell me what size baffle you used? 12” or 18” and would it matter? Thanks! 😊
@cheryl82802 жыл бұрын
Deborah Mastranduono Go big or go home! I would use the biggest baffle I could find, BUT. That would be such an eyesore, wouldn't it? But I'll try anything once. I did hear they won't eat certain seeds. So if you pack your feeders with these undesirable seed, eventually they won't bother with that feeder anymore. This is all theory, mind you. They've totally ruined my lawn. They've eaten through my 2 x 6 pressure treated wooden deck. They've eaten through the floor of my shed in several places. How they got in there is beyond me. The shed is hermetically sealed with expanding foam to keep them out!! If you come up with an idea that works, PLEASE let me know. I'm old and don't want to play their games anymore. Hugs from Canada!!

Have you ever tried using a single baffle by turning the baffle the other end up? I realize that the squirrel will be able to jump into it, but can they reach the plate below with the baffle extending outwards? Just an idea.....maybe something to test out?
@CruzesLouisianaOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Howdy sir....great idea! I did actually try this and while it was 100% effective...the darn upside down baffle kept getting leaves and sticks and bird poop and everything else you can think of in it....I wasn't in the mood to get a ladder, go out and clean it every couple of days so I canned that idea. I've had great success with a third Method, I put a 35 ft cloths line between two poles. I thread 8 pop bottles near each pole ( or tree) Then put 3,4,or five feeders on the line. No tree rat,possum, racoons has ever defeated this method. Drill a small hole in the bottom of the bottle,push the line through the top.
