Thanks! I am going to remove the gathering as well. I’m using eyelet with a cotton lawn underneath. That would be bulky with gathers or pleats.

Sounds great! Multiple layers of fabric can make gathers look bulky and fall awkwardly if too tightly bunched. I think you've got the right approach removing them, sounds like a lovely project!
