To those people saying how expensive the fabric is I would say, yes it is, but obviously the company is going to promote their own products in the video. You can use normal scissors and a domestic sewing machine, and buy cheaper fabric if you like, which I will be doing. I have already bought my fabric from eBay (lightweight waterproof canvas) at £36 for 6 metres and came on here to watch how to make it. My fabric may not last as long as the Sunbrella fabric but is within my budget. The video is wonderful, with clear instructions and close ups. Thank you so much for bothering to put this video online - it is extremely helpful!

Thanks for the kind comments! The issue of using a cheaper fabric is that you may only get one season out of the umbrella before it fades or eventually rots in the sun. I would rather spend a little more for an Acrylic fabric, especially since I will have to put so much time and energy into cutting and sewing it together. Just my thoughts.....
@flowerchild7772 жыл бұрын
Caryn, you can also use a product similar to ScotchGard to weatherization your umbrella. Should help with fading. You'd probably want to do that annually, but it's still budget-friendly.🤗

Excellent video! I don't understand why some people have to vent ( excuse the pun) , if you don't want to spend the money for a premiuum product then buy the less expensive material. After doing my due dilligence I found your Sunbrella prices competative with other suppliers. Now to my question, I have a a 15' diameter umbrella and each gore is made up of 3 sections that are not connected between that panel and the one below except where that connect to the next gore, I assume this is for air venting,. Do you have any additional directions for how to handle this situation that would be helpful, do you just attach it on the vertical seams?
@SailriteDIY Жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph, Based on what you are saying it sounds like the correct solution. I would also assume it is for venting and to avoid damage in high winds. You may want to email images to info@sailrite.com so I can take a closer look.

Did you say: "All other fabrics are far less inferior."? The meaning of that sentence is: "All other fabrics are superior (better than Sunbrella)." It would be easier to remove the stiches and take out one panel and use it as a template to cut the other identical panels. All that measuring is a waste of time. Exact measurements do not require a number system (metric or English...) or a calculator. What you se is what you get! To cut out the stiches, use a razor blade retrieved from a disposable shaver that has two or fewer blades. Use the largest knife to split and separate the metal shaving blades from the plastic shaving head.

I'm working on one now using some heavy fabric that I friend gave me. I made one a few years ago using white duck cloth for a 7 foot umbrella. Cost about $18 for the fabric bought at Walmart. Some tips...wash the fabric after you cut the panels in case of shrinkage. Don't dry the fabric in dryer, hang dry it, then iron it before sewing. This will allow you to wash it in the future without it shrinking & not fitting when you put the cloth back on the umbrella frame.I used white duck cloth because it won't fade in the sun, but it can get dirty but you can wash it. It holds up well & won't fade because it's white. Make sure the umbrella is wide open when taking measurements, otherwise the fabric will be too tight (a mistake I made the first time)& the umbrella won't open fully.I only use one circle of fabric on top and borrowed a grommet tool to install a grommet on top. I didn't install a tie with mine.This is an excellent video.

You can use Sunbrella Marine Grade, but it is thicker and firmer and does not as easily fold up as the Sunbrella Upholstery (or what was then called Furniture Fabric). Most people want to easily collapse the umbrella, and the Sunbrella Marine Grade does not allow it as well as the Sunbrella Upholstery Fabric.

I love your videos! They're so detailed and really helpful :) I already used your tips to make some great cushions for my patio chairs and now I want to try to do an umbrella as well once mine needs to have the fabric replaced. I do have one question. Could you demonstrate sometime the seamstress cutting the fabric with the alternative hot knife that you mention? I'd love to get a hot knife but the one you had at your website was too costly for me. I saw one from Walnut Hollow (model 29639) that was more in my price range but only saw it after I had already sewed my pillows so I didn't need it then. The style looks different from the one you had so I wonder how it would work by comparison.
@SailriteDIY8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your positive comments! Regarding your question about another type of hotknife from another store, you would have to do some testing, as they are all slightly different and will preform differently. Usually the blade is the major issue I find with other hotknifes. I typically use our Edge Hotknife which heats up in a few seconds and cools down in a minute or two. www.sailrite.com/Sailrite-Edge-Hotknife-Package-110-Volt You may want to consider this less expensive hot knife and the blade that you must purchase separately: www.sailrite.com/Weller-Soldering-Iron-Hotknife Blade: www.sailrite.com/Tip-for-Weller-Hotknife
@xtafpfhr54918 жыл бұрын
thank you :) have you used that model for cutting fabric? how did you find it compared with the hot knife from the video?
@SailriteDIY8 жыл бұрын
The Weller Hotknife listed above, yes I have used it. It works well, but takes about 4 minutes to heat up. So, as long as you leave it hot and plugged in when using, it works well, but if you unplug it after each cut to let it cool down it will take another 4 minutes to heat up again. That is the only major pain of that cheaper knife, otherwise it is good.
@xtafpfhr54918 жыл бұрын
I've never used a hot knife so I'm kinda confused why you would want it to cool down while you're using it? Does that model just get too hot?
@SailriteDIY8 жыл бұрын
That is a good question. The issue about a hot knife is that you want it to be hot when you need it to cut, but when you are done cutting it would be good if it were to cool down fast, so it does not damage anything it accidentally touches. The issue with hot knifes that take several minutes to heat up is this... you do not want to unplug them (after they are heated up) when they are not in use, because you may need to make another cut in a few minutes and do not want to wait for it to heat up again. In those several minutes before the next cut is required, the knife is hot and may burn anything it accidentally comes in contact with.

@KarenGrieves4 жыл бұрын
what kind of Needle are you using Mine Gumms up using the tape.
@SailriteDIY4 жыл бұрын
It is not the needle. Here are some suggestions: 1. Try the next smaller needle. Sometimes you just need more friction between the needle and the fabric to clean the adhesive from the needle. Otherwise the adhesive fills the groove in the needle and keeps that groove from performing its function - allowing the thread to slip on one side of the needle to allow for thread loop creation. If the loop is not created then the machine will skip a stitch or stitches. 2. Push the needle into a bar of Ivory soap repetitively to coat it prior to installing it in your sewing machine. Adhesive just doesn’t stick to this soap and it sometimes works really well. 3. Make sure you are using the right basting tape. If the tape you are using has too much adhesive content it will stick great but will also potentially cause stitch skipping.
