I have four sons. They have claimed for years and years that I have the most comfortable bed in the house. I always told them to just make their beds the way I do. With tons of layers. Upon realising we all love very heavy bedding, my sons all put in requests for heavy blankets. I believe one request went like this. "Mom, I want you to buy me a blanket like those xray blankets they use when you get an xray. I want it to be so heavy it will crack my bones." hahaha

I made a weighted blanket for myself, but it just didn't feel right straight off. I didn't like so much weight in some areas, but wanted more in others. So after a lot of experiments, I ended up making a lot of individual square pockets, divided the beads and put more in some, less in others, marking them with the weight, and a number, and made some spare. I then went on to put holes in the initial cover that holds the sewn closed pouches in place where the line of sewing would be, and threaded ribbon through to keep the bead bags from slipping around. The whole thing then went into the actual removable cover, using ribbon at the corners to hold it in place, but it also meant that should my body (I have fibro, and restless leg syndrome) require different weights in certain positions, it is easy to replace a pouch with another one. It worked really well, but now have to make myself another one, as my close friend, who has terrible depression and insomnia, needed it more than I do right now, and she swears by it.

I had not heard of this before this video popped up on my feed. I don’t have any of these diagnoses, but have always preferred heavier blankets ever since I had a cotton quilt as a child. They aren’t as heavy as these, but I still associate the weight with warmth. I really dislike a hot blanket with no weight to it, like a down comforter.. Very interesting...I would like to explore this idea more fully. Thanks so much.

Just make sure that she is physically fit enough to remove the blanket herself, for her own safety. The blanket in this video was only 6 pounds, but it takes some effort for my niece to carry it around!

Alyssa Brown it will drive you crazy until you give up. The beads will not stay where they belong so sewing it shut is absolutely impossible. Your best bet is to make tiny individual beanbags and then sew those into the blanket

Thank you for the tutorial. I make rag quilts and a friend wants me to make her a weighted rag quilt. I cut my squares and place batting in between the squares that form a sandwich and sew an X to hold all in place. Since the squares are sewn together with the seams up to cut & rag how would I go about making the pockets?

Use buckwheat hulls, they’re used in sobakowa pillows to stay cool and they’re heavy.

I make these blankets for people everyday all day.. I was just wondering why you don't use a batting in between the two layers for stability do you not find it very flimsy just using the two fabrics??? do you sew half the blanket first half the blanket and fil it then turn it around sew and fill the other half??? I sew my coloms and mark on my squares close all three sides leaving one end open then I fill my rows until all filled close my top and finished..

+Shelley St.Clair hi! No, if you use fleece on top and bottom it isn't too flimsy, since it's filled with pellets. I've heard a lot of people complain that they're too hot to use most of the year, if there's batting in there as well. The reason I work from the middle out, is because it's much easier to fill the pockets on larger blankets. That can get tricky and messy if you're pouring them down to the bottom of a large blanket. However, if I were doing something small like a lap pad, I would sew the three sides first.

Shelley St.Clair if your blanket looks saggy, it's because the pockets need to be smaller so the weight is distributed more evenly. Additional pockets with a smaller amount of beads in each will solve that problem :)

You can wash a blanket that's 10 pounds or less in the washing machine. If it's heavier, you'll want to take it to a laundromat and use a washer intended specifically for large loads / blankets. You can tumble dry on low, or hang to dry. (I like to drape it over my deck railing to dry in the sun.)

Kingsley Poe I’m pretty sure you could use any fabric that feels nice to sleep under and can be sewn relatively easily. I think cotton would work well because it’s light and breathable.

I just bought a weighted blanket, and my little girl complains it's too small. She is tall and the blanket falls off her easily. I can't get an answer anywhere else, so I wanted to ask, can I add a boarder to it? Like a cotton on the edges to make sure it stays on her when she sleeps, it's only 4.6lbs, she can use up to 10lbs, so weight isn't an issue. I wanted to add a boarder. I got her the LOL surprise dolls blanket, but she is just too long, and moves too much for it to stay on her, even though she loves it. All the heavier ones are getting in the highter price ranges, and I need 2, so I can't really afford to buy a different one. But I do know how to sew and would love to just alter the one I have.

Just as long as it is 10% of your body weight. So if you weigh 150lbs, then you should use 15lbs of pellets.

The REALLY, big front loader at the laundromat. In the meantime, sew a duvet cover, or 2 for it. It will cut down on the times you need to launder it and thus the wear and tear on a 50 lb. Blanket. It also means that you can often save a bit more on the fabric for the weighted blanket, as drab solid colors are available more often on sale. I plan to do this for my son's blanket and I'm scoping out high thread count sheets from the thrift store to make the blanket and splurge a little on fabric for 2 duvet covers.

It’s easy math. You want to make a 7lb blanket that has 36 pockets just.... 16 oz X 7 = 112 ounces of poly pellets. Divide 112 by 36 (# pockets) and you get 3.1. So each of the pockets gets 3.1 oz of pellets.

They can be recycled. The issue with natural sources (such as corn or) is that they can aggravate allergies and they will mold if they get wet.

The problem with plastic beads is that it is in all honesty is rarely, if ever, recycled and most recycle centers are NOT set up to recycle plastic like this- is too small. My recycle center doesn’t even take plastic caps. So beads like this end up in landfills, and after rainwater and run-off do their work (if small animals haven’t aalready ingested them) eventually finding their way into our fresh water and oceans where they are ingested by sea life and we eventually end up eating it. We’ve got to start changing our use and consumer consumption of petroleum products (all plastic) which never breaks down!! So theoretically, these plastic beads maybe can be recycled...but the likelihood of finding someone to take them as recyclables is very small, practically nonexistent.I don’t say any of this to criticize your beautiful work... maybe making them with fine glass beads might be something to think about? 💞 L

Lisa Fladager glass beeds can be a danger, and you would need to sew them into little pouches and then sew the blanket out of rows and rows of pockets you can remove each pouch from when you wanted to wash it. If you use glass marbles you are probably better off sewing each marble into its own compartment so that the risk of marbles crashing together without enough cushioning is reduced. You could use a thin durable material for that, sandwiching beads as you go, and then use that either as an added top insert for on top of a thin blanket or a thick blanket in a uh blanket case (I don't remember the correct word for it right now, English isn't my first language).

I get what you were trying to say.... However shes making a blanket that would last years... its fleece, proving your thread held up it could last a lifetime! It would likely be sold or passed down not just tossed in the garbage.... I'd be right on board with you if it was for a toy the kid would break or grow bored of in a month or something.

Yes, I agree that the plastic beads are horrible. I'm using aquarium rocks for the one I'm making. $20 for a 25lb bag and all natural for the environment.
