You are such a good teacher, this is the most precise tutorial I have seen on weighted blankets. I worked in a forensic psychiatric facility where we used these to ease stress and to comfort those in crisis. Thank you for helping caregivers to provide this form of stress reduction to loved ones.

I've made 2 weighted blankets for my stepdaughter and her boyfriend before seeing your video. I literally just winged it and made the duvets cotton with a sewed on a flannel cover. I think they ended up being about 12-15 lbs each. Your video so descriptive, clear and to the point. I love the idea of a removable cover and have been wanting to make one for myself. Love your video! Thank you!

Made one years ago for my grandson who is on the spectrum. His weight has increased greatly, but he still uses it. I am making my adult daughter one now, just because she loves tones of covers and wants one. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for this video. I volunteer for a charity and we made 9 different weighted blankets for the agency that oversees foster children. The pellets were very expensive, but the agency bought the pellets for us. It was for Christmas and we found out what each child’s favorite color and favorite theme. We bought fabric and made the blankets. The blankets were made just about our your video, except we did not do a duvet cover and we had about 2 inches around the perimeter of the blanket. Our charity just fills a need in our community.

My BFF has MS and her doctor suggested a weighted blanket to help her sleep with no jumpy-ness. I knew if you had a video on it, I was going to use your instructions! Last month, I made a weighted blanket for my grandchild who has been having sleep issues. She loves it. I used the poly-pellets as you did, but I made separate pockets, attached to them the inside of one of the outer fleece layers, then quilted both layers together to further secure the pockets. One of my children wants one now. I will definitely be using your channel method this time and your tip of adding batting to the pockets. Keep making your wonderful videos. Your channel is my favorite for sewing and quilting info.

I made a weighted blanket for a 2 year-old grandson with anxieties. I used two novelty fabrics that he would enjoy, one with a fun motif and one with a calming motif (night sky). He uses it as part of his calming practices and for nighttime sleeping. Thank you, Laura for this video. I really like the idea of adding batting to the squares.

Laura, my daughter said the blanket she bought, works wonderfully! She has no pain from the Fibromyalgia! She said when she feels pain during work, she thinks of her blanket and can’t wait to snuggle in bed for relief! She said her blanket didn’t come with ties inside so the blanket shifts and is annoying. I’ll sew them inside for her. I plan on making yours for myself! Bless you for your tutorial!💖

I had ordered one for me 3 weeks ago and am hoping I can sleep better. Right after I ordered mine, my daughter said her oldest child was having lots of sleeping issues and disturbing her other sister as she crawled into bed with her in the middle of the night. Since they are so expensive to buy, I ordered pellets and made her an 11 pound flannel weighted blanket. She is sleeping soundly through the night now. 🙂. Love this video with the duvet effect, although sewing with cuddle fabric can be tricky. Thanks for great info. Will do it your way next time. BTW, my 16 pound Minky weighted blanket as well as my granddaughter’s 11 pound blanket washed and dried perfectly in my front loader washing machine. Anything more than 16 pounds would need to be at a Laundromat in their heavy duty machines - hence the duvet so that can be washed after untying the weighted section.

I made a weighted blanket for my Granddaughter for Christmas. She is extremely shy and was looking to purchase one, told her Dad, and he and I figured out the measurements, I purchased the poly pellets on Ebay, we weighed out each 'pocket' and filled sturdy paper cups to pour into canning funnel attached to a cardboard tube from Christmas wrapping paper, worked well because I could reach the bottom without pellets getting stuck along the way. I used a heavy cotton for lining for both front and back, with her favorite fleece covering one side. She loved it!! Not as hard as I thought, but someone to help you does make it easier, and you have to be very careful that you don't sew over the pellets, or you will break your needle.

I was fortunate to try one years ago that weighed 50lbs & the fabric was similar to something woven from Mexico! I loved it! But I was 106lbs at the time & I LOVED it! It don’t know what was used for the weight. But wherever they got that 10%...maybe a study? May not be a one-size-fits-all Truth. *These are also great for those in long-term withdrawal of addicting medicines.

I am a fan of a heavy blanket no formula my mom taught me to use a heavy blanket, ( she used the old wool army blankets) covered on each side by with cotton sometimes quilted sometimes not, tied every two inches with double yarn , by then you have a very heavy blanket, However, times have changed and in making one for my artistic granddaughter so plan to use you pattern for her, But I’m keeping my king size quilt forever! My grandson needed a weighted blanket to help sooth him when his anxiety peeked. The cost to purchase a pre-made blanket can run into the hundreds of dollars. His PT asked, if I could make him one. Up to that point, there was limited information out on how to make this type of blanket. Looking online, I not only saw $300 price, also saw what it looked like. From there, I made my guesstiment on poundage per length and width and made his blanket. It has truly help him. Since then, I made another for another child, and one for an adult. The bigger they are, the heavier they are. Common sence, right? The blankets are easy to make, as shown. They do work.

I made I made a king size with your directions, thank you. I was able to iron the top piece by folding over and over by halves and that helped make my rows without a ton of measuring. Then I just went and followed the creases with a yard stick to make my pencil lines. Without the duvet it’s actually chilly, which is great because I live in the tropics. I would make it smaller next time because it’s so heavy and I sleep alone. (Husband snores like a dinosaur.)

I personally feel like I agree, because it also makes sense to have the weight a little more evenly distributed, but I've never used a weighted blanket with pellets before. I'm interested in buying or making one for myself. Is there a square size that you'd personally recommend? 2-3 inches maybe? I suppose it also depends on the amount you're putting into each square, huh?

you can get it at the fabric store. It is rolled up in a big box. I found them beside the pattern drawers:)

I'm confused about the weight you added for your blanket. Did you use 5 or 10 % beads? I love this idea and really want to make one. I've never heard about this before. Thank you so much for another wonderful project :)

if you are 130 lbs you need aprox. 13lbs of weight. You can have a 1-2 lbs more. Keep the weight of the fabric in mind:) hope this helps

@@SewVeryEasy my son asked me to make him one for Christmas..he is 24 yrs old and well over 200 lbs...like 280. I think I will just make it 20 lbs...I think I read that's the max to make it. What's your opinion please?

I had thought about making one just for my ex-husband, but now that I think about it more, I think I'll make one for my dad as well. He gets cold so easily and he aches, so maybe this would help. What do you think, Laura?

Also, another quick question. Where do you lay your fabric out to be able to mark it so well? I have trouble getting down on my hands and knees anymore, and I don't have tables or counters big enough to do it there. Any suggestions?
@SewVeryEasy

Large tables, you can ask your library, quilt shop or church if they will let you use the tables and space

I've researched this: ...the blanket should fit the body, NOT the bed. It should be big enough to cover the body from the tip of the chin to just past the toes. But children grow quickly; you may choose to allow a little extra length for growong room..."--Leisure Arts publication. Another source cites these "gravity" blankets should not hang over the side of the bed, but rather, simply snug around the body. And, as always, never cover a child too young to push it off by him/herself. (I think that's why they say not to let it hang over the side of the bed as well.) 'Hope this helps.

It's more important to get the weight measurement than the size, since these blankets are meant for the body, not the bed--see below.

Here's the formula, (with the caveat to consult your health care professional about the best weight for your child): Take 10% of body weight + 1 lb. Ex.: a 60 lb. child would need 7 lbs. of pellets [60 lbs. X 10% + 1 lb. = 7 lbs.] Leisure Arts also recommends multiplying this weight by 16 oz., and then dividing this Nr. by the number of pouches in your finished blanket. (You can use a digital food scale to put the determined nr. of oz. in each pouch, or follow Laura's ex. w/the measuring cup.)

I love your videos & am so jealous of your lovely silver hair. I have a niece & a good friends child both with etreme nonverbal autism as well as my best friends daughter who is mildly autistic who I'm now going to make weighted lap blankets for if their parents are open to using them.
