I'm getting back into sewing and for now, I'm watching a bunch of videos on KZbin on sewing machine techniques... I got an assortment of feet on amazon for my machine and you are so right--I need to practice on strips of fabric with all of the feet to see where they excel and where they bomb. I haven't worked up my courage to try knits and silks yet... wovens are going to be my guinea pigs for now. Thanks for doing this video!!

On some fabrics running a line of stay stitching helps to prevent stretching around the curve helps to feed the fabric and makes a less furled rolled hem. But , with any fabric, experimenting with different options is still the only way to get the perfect combination that works with that fabric. It’s part of the fun of sewing. And, Practice makes perfect.

What are the options? I’ve been sewing for over a decade and about 5 years ago someone taught me and & it was 1 lesson and I was very good at it. Now I can’t figure out how to get it rolling to save my life. What am I doing wrong?

I have a variety of these and should practice more. I discovered that I could do the shirt hems with bias and they turn out beautifully so that's what I've been doing. It let's me add a little touch of hidden color also.

Try this tip first,.. before you roll the fabric in the foot, roll it MANUALLY and sew it for 1 inch, then roll it in the foot and continue.....

They are difficult at first, it is true, but let the fabric lead you and have patience. As Susan suggested in the video having the right foot is vital. Experiment with different sized rolled hem feet for your particular fabric, rather than deciding on the foot first. Have a few inches of fabric to waste at the beginning getting started rather than starting directly on the garment. ( Try tagging on an extra piece at the beginning of the garment to get started if need be). Relax, relax, relax, and watch the feed into the foot keeping at an even speed. Do not pull too taunt on the fabric, but don’t let it get loose either. Let the foot and machine do it’s work. Fabric, foot, needle, thread, stitch length, relax, relax, relax, slow even speed. You can get this! Susan has shown you how to try. Replay the video and catch her spirit!

@@susaneliascouture Maybe factories have a better way of doing it?

Vivienne Andersson As far as I know they use a roller foot. I was also a Alterations manager at David’s Bridal and they refused to use a roller foot. Instead it was a two part process with top stitching. The real reason the silk sample didn’t work is their are major things that have to be done before sewing silk. I’m glad you got something out of this video. Thank you for watching and commenting:).
