Making a narrow hem on light fabric is one of those things that can really level up your sewing and make your garments look fab. Using a rolled hem foot can make this much easier and faster.

“If you are feeling like you need this for a dress you’re supposed to wear to a wedding tomorrow…” So, I looked up this tutorial to help me hem my bridesmaid’s dress. For my friend’s wedding…tomorrow. I can’t tell you how hard I laughed. Thank you for posting this video! It was very insightful and thorough, and it added a lot of levity to my evening. 😂

Oh my GOD literally just that "line up the edge to the bar" thing absolutely changed the game for me!! Haven't seen that on any other tutorial and got a perfect hem first try (after many failed attempts before this tutorial obviously). Thank you!!

Another option to starting is to sew 3-4 stitches on your fabric without folding it over, just flat on the sewing machine bed. Then lift your pressure foot and needle, pull the fabric back, and use both of your thread tails to manipulate the fabric into the scroll. Once it’s in the scroll correctly, just position the fabric under the foot at the beginning of the seam. The fabric, in my experience, needs to cover the left toe of the foot as you sew forward. These feet are amazing and provide wonderful results. The foot does the heavy lifting, but the preparation is key to success. Generally speaking, the bigger the scroll, the heavier the fabric that they can handle. I use the 6 mm one for flannel, but I’d never use a 3 mm one for flannel. It does take a bit of practice to get used to working with these types of feet, so test out on some 12-18 inch strips to learn. You can also sometimes start on a scrap or leader before moving onto your hem. I find that works as it gives me a little feeding space before the real hem starts. Almost any type of zig zag stitch will give a scalloped edge, especially if you adjust your tension and stitch length. I find the scallops more pronounced on knit fabrics than cotton. The wide opening in your foot gives you some needle position options. Play with those in combination with various stitch designs or patterns for some attractive finishes. One word of caution though, stitches that are stitched by moving forward and backward may not work because the hem behind the foot is already stitched down. Stitches that are executed from back to front will likely work best. Have fun. Thanks for posting this video.

So helpful!!! Knowing about the bar is truly a game changer for me. I'm hemming some sheer 7 yd length curtains and always fight getting started. Using 2 or 3 stitches at the beginning and then bringing those thru the scroll is how I've been doing this for years but it was still a 2 or 3 try process to get started. Knowing about the bar has made all the difference in the world. Thanks! 😊

I just sewed that on the first try. I’ve sewn plenty of hems, with the standard foot (fold, iron, press, sew, repeat), but all the tutorials I’ve seen on these were so complicated that I didn’t really see the point… by the time I’d get it set up I could’ve gone through the whole routine I was used to. The tip about the fabric matching the bar and pre folding the fabric made the difference. Thanks!

I have first used rolled hems in very fine almost sheer crepe fabric. And I actually used sewing pins to gather the fabric around the cone and the guide and I use a pin to keep the start of the stitch in place, since it tends to unroll itself even if you press it. An awl is much easier for fabrics with more weight in them! Great video.

@@LS-vq2or Interesting. I have access to a Feiyue machine and a Brother. The Feiyue is hard but probably OK if you practise and acquire the skills. The Brother: no way; doesn't even make the stitches. No idea why but I'd defy anyone to do this on our family's Brother!

Interesting thanks. This looks like it would work well for hemming a scarf or filmsy fabric. I have a foot that came with my machine and haven't tried them all yet. Didnt know they came in different widths either.

Oh what a good video 😃👌 I’ve never used a rolled hem foot but your enthusiasm makes me excited to try (how sad is that 🤣) But that aside you explain the process really, really clearly, so thank you for that. Also, We are living in such troubled times at the moment so your fun and cheeriness are uplifting. 🌟 👏👏. I’ve subscribed and look forward to future videos.
