Have you ever tried to Sgraffito pottery? In this video, I will demonstrate the sgraffito technique using Engobe underglaze. I see a lot of sgraffito ceramics online that are perfectly precise and look very difficult, but the sgraffito technique doesn’t have to be hard! I will show you exactly how in this step-by-step sgraffito tutorial.

Does engobe not stick to the kiln like a glaze? I’m so confused how you glazed the bottom.

I’m confused. The first thing I was taught!! No glaze on the bottom.

Engobe is not glaze. It's just liquid coloured clay (slip)... it's applied before first firing....since its just clay and no glaze it won't stick to the kiln ;)

Thank you so much!!! This is great :) Can I ask you : what percentage of color vs. white slip do you use to create the colored slip you apply to your pot? Thanks!

When you do Sgraffito, can you recycle the bits that get carved off as you would with regular clay, or do they have to go to a special waste stream?

What are the firing temperatures you use for these kind of pots, and are they waterproof? Great tutorial and thank you so much for your videos.

Is it necessary to put a glaze on top of engobes? Or if u want them to be mat, u can leave them like that? Or u need to cover them with mat glaze anyway if u need dish to be waterresistant?

Do you mix mason stain in your slip from the clay that you’re throwing for the color layer?

Awesome question! It looks like this is an “engobe “ already made, but I bet you can make your one with white slip and Mason stains! I am going to try!

Thank you for showing this technique! I'm still learning about pottery and your videos are totally helping (´。• ᵕ •。`) ♡ My very first thingie is actually a leaf plate, like the one you made a tutorial about! I made it kinda freestyle but I enjoyed the process and I'm very happy with the result! Wish you a wonderful day Mia (´。• ᵕ •。`) ♡

I couldn't see the tip of the tool you were using, and you didn't specify which one you were using. A sped up shot of the tools was so brief I didn't have time to see it.

Is engobe the same as underglaze?
@dalab9716
@dalab9716 11 ай бұрын
From ceramicartsnetwork: Slips are predominantly liquefied clay; they usually are applied on wet to dry greenware. Engobes usually have a lower clay content and also can be used on bisque-fired ware. The word slip generally is used to describe any clay in liquid form. All slips and engobes can be colored with oxides, carbonates and stains. The word engobe is used most often in North America and describes a wider range of uses in the development of the decorative surface. Underglaze is basically the same thing, and it can be colored with any colorant or stain. Whereas the simple liquefied slip commonly is used to coat greenware, an engobe can be formulated for use at any stage, including over bisque-fired ware. Engobes also often are used without a covering glaze, giving a wider potential for experimentation with the surface. An engobe or underglaze is more like a glaze in structure and may contain very little plastic clay.

I’ve been taught NEVER glaze the bottom because the glaze melts and you need to use an angle grinder to remove it, costing a lot of money and damage.
