hey man, thanks for the vid! definitely gonna need this when I buy my new trimmer. one thing I will add though, I know everyone has been telling you to wet the stone, so I won't mention that, but as someone who does use these japanese whetstones to sharpen knives, you can actually start on the 1000 grit, its sufficient enough to sharpen your blade from the start. the 400 grit is usually only used if your blade is really in that bad of condition, to the point where it won't cut a single strand of hair fed into it. this will help your blades last longer since you won't be grinding away more than you need. hope this helps!

wetting the blade cuts down on the heat generated?
@dragosfgv2 ай бұрын
@@prezthedj yea I suppose it does, but why would you need heat? just what I imagine: you want the friction of the whetstone's rough surface, thus the whetstone should be wet to prevent clogging of residue. moreover, mild heat can potentially have a weakening effect

So I only cut my sons hair. Learned on KZbin and I cut it pretty decently (now) but I can never get that crisp shape up line that I want even after a zero gap my Andis shape up clippers. Am I doing a poor job Zero gapping them or are fresh clippers just slightly dull on purpose? And barbers have to sharpen them to their liking?

Hey Cole do you have a Diamond stone to keep your 400X1000 FLAT?? if not you should get one because if it dishes out it will not sharpen right. You probably already know this. I bought a 400X1000 Diamond plate from a sharpening supply house was only 38$.

Thanks a lot. This will save me a lot of money and time. The place where I take my blades to get sharpened has a 4-6 week turn around time. Yikes! I cut my own hair at home, once or twice a week. How often should I sharpen my blade?
@dragosfgv2 ай бұрын
Hey man, Im sure you wanted an answer from the guy, but thought Id share my opinion too: if youve got something of quality like a wahl, itll last you at least half a year. something cheaper, maybe every 2 months. you dont want to sharpen too often either, as each sharpening process wears off a layer of metal on the blade

Make sure its dead flat on the stone on the flat side of the blade (not the outside) and make sure you're not rocking the blade towards the edges or tip. Dead flat. Use a large magnet to hold the blade if you can't grasp your blade. I know I can't. If you're unsure if the stone is cutting the metal, color the whole inside of the metal blade body with a sharpie. Then you can see what part of the blade is making contact with the stone. It should be the whole blade surface except the low channels machined out by the factory. If you use a cheap stone though it will either not cut well or dish out quick, like these Sharp Pebble stones. They are among the WORST stones out there. I use sand paper on a piece of glass that's thick and flat. Works amazing! Start with 220 grit if it's really dull, then 400, 800 and if you're frisky 1500 to finish. Test on you're arm hair when you're done. Hope that helps

@@onpoint357numerous. I sharpen blades for a living. I own the Nebraska Big Red. Your sand paper method might just might work once or twice at best but I'm going to have to remove more material taking more life off that blade to fix your problem. If you left it as is I can trap in that blade a dozen times. if you wanted to last months even years get it done right. Or you must not have enough clients and you have the time to take it apart every single time and do this.

This is literally the same concept as the company’s use. Only correction I would make is to use in one 1️⃣ direction not back and forth, being that the back and forth would create a pattern in the blade. This is foundation work though so everybody being super technical and saying it will ruin blades are ignorant
