How to Shave a Long Haired Cat at Home

We had been experiencing 35-40 degree celsius weather this summer, so I decided to shave my long haired cat to keep her cool=) because who wants to be wearing a long fur coat in this summer heat.
Before I shaved my cat, I turned on the trimmer to test her reaction to it. To see if she would be afraid of the sound. She wasn't scared at all, therefore I decided that I would be able to shave her at home safely.
* DISCLAIMER: I am not a professional groomer. in this video I am just showing you what worked for my cat and I, and how I was able to safely trim her coat at home with the tools I bought online. Please bring your pet to a professional groomer to prevent injuries to your cat and yourself if you feel that your cat might be scared or not stay still enough for you to SAFELY shave them at home. If your cat has extremely matted fur, it's best to bring it to a groomer as well. Always test to see if your pet would be afraid of the trimmer FIRST before you decide whether or not you can trim their coat at home.

Please be aware that long fur protects a cat from excessive heat, in the same way it protects from excessive cold. A cat's body temperature is significantly higher than a human, so where we would be uncomfortable, they are not. If they were, they would not lay in the sunspots in the house. I have six ragdolls in west Texas and the only time I shave them is when they develop deep mats (as very elderly cats do) or need hygiene trims.

That’s actually not true. Cats were bred by us humans for desirable yet unpractical traits. so they didn’t evolve this way Naturally because it wouldn’t make sense in a natural environment .long hair like that is not desirable or comfortable for the cat. It usually ends in mats, and excessive overheating in hot areas. This is an example of why breeding sometimes can be a bit cruel. It’s for our own amusement because it looks cute but it’s not practical . Another good example is the poor bulldog , Which lives most if it’s life in misery.

Ooooh you are so wrong. The long fur is something that comes from northern cats, to protect them from the extrem cold or that asshole human breeded that way. It has no cooling function, when it is to Long. It DOES have a cooling function, when they have short fur and can wet their own fur with their toungue. If the fur is to long, they lick themself for hours, the cooling effect would never reach the skin.

This is too late but you’re not suppose to shave your kitty unless medically necessary. A cat’s coat is unique in that it helps them to regulate both heat & cold. Shaving a kitty just makes them more susceptible to sunburn & heat stroke (the very thing you’re trying to prevent). Please leave Kitty’s fur alone. It has been proven that cats can feel embarrassed & some do feel embarrassed every time their hair is clip. I have a part Maine Coon cat who weighs in at 18 pounds (not overweight according to the vet) he’ll be 5 this July 2023, & his medium length thick fur coat has never been shaved nor trimmed, & he has never overheated nor gotten heatstroke. Summer here has temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius outside & 45 degrees inside a standard apartment, plus the humidity. My other medium haired kitty has a thinner coat but she also has never been shave & she too has been fine, she just turned 9.

Actually she’ll be hotter. You should never shave a double coated cat unless severely matted. Just brush out all the undercoat and the cat will be much cooler. Cats rely on their double coat which acts as insulation to regulate their body temperature.

respect, you got it done and she will thank you in this weather. i am having a very hard time trimming my long hair, she has very little interest in food and will happily eat only dry food. she is so impatient and when she is done, she is done. very hard to continue without totally risking traumatizing her. i feel so sorry for her in this heat, think i will bring her to a pro for this one, poor thing already has a few clumps of matted fur under her arms, but she will not stay still long enough to cut them out with scissors

You have a great calm cat. My cat isn't calm with grooming or shaving. She gets very aggressive and will attack. I had to unfortunately take to veterinary and they couldn't handle her so they have to sedate her. I hate this. I wish there was an easier way

I struggle with the guards so much. It's like it doesn't actually take anything out. I have a long hair who mats once the fur is over two inches long. I don't want to have to shave him down completely, just manage it. But I do recommend a thinning shears for around the face and mane. It helps my gentleman groom himself without constantly getting caught on his own fur

I have a medium-haired cat with matted fur by her butt and tail area. I was told olive oil makes the mats fall right out and they did the first time but the second time they came back, it didn't work. So my option left to do is to shave her back area. She's a very skittish running away cat... she doesn't like certain sounds either so I don't think she would stay if I turned the shaver on. I don't wanna spend a lot of money at the groomers... do you recommend getting a sedative pill and then I can shave the cat while she's sleeping?

Okay, but how do you prevent the hair from folding under the shaver, like I can pass my shaver over the cat 100 times and it doesn't pick up any much or any hair at all. Even without the guards I have to grab tufts of hair and push them into the shaver for them to get shaved. My shaver is something that looks the same as yours.

Thank you for this very helpful video - we have a 2-year old long-haired cat who looks a lot like your cat. I let him out in the back yard when I'm working from home because I sit right next to the patio door and although he wanders in and out, he always stays where I can see him. Being outside offers so much enrichment to our cat, so we are lucky he stays close . There is even a beautiful magnolia tree he loves to climb, and we are lucky that he's not brave enough to go very high up. A couple of down sides to letting him go outside is that we have to stay on top of flea treatment, and also that last Winter's record rain resulted in a huge amount of sticker-weeds. I'm trying pull them all out, but they grow SO fast, and our poor cat keeps collecting them in his tail . We just ordered cat clippers on Amazon and we're hoping he is as well-behaved as your wonderful kitty and that the shorter hair will make it easier for him AND for us to stay clean and sticker-free. It's so hard to do if you're not a professional. I have a white cat with fine fur but she sheds a lot. When he had an ultrasound they shaved his stomach area and the shedding was so much less, so I thought well I'll try it. I used a guard with the longest teeth but wasn't sure which one to use, long or short teeth? He lets me do it a little while I give him treats,sometimes he's better and sometimes not! Your cat looks fine!

I bought the clear plastic ball cat muzzle off of Amazon. I’m shaving 3 of my longhaired cats, and one is quite fractious. So she’s going to get a claw trim, then the muzzle, then shave down in that order. Wish me luck! 😂

does your house have air condition? and also i find that getting them a marble slab to lay on also helps. i just bought a marble slab that was used for kneading dough. and the trimmer is just one i got from amazon. many companies sell the same trimmer on amazon so just pick the cheapest one with the best review since they are probably all from the same manufactor

also another tip my vet gave me is that if the cat is really hot. wet their paws. it'll cool them down since cats don't sweat
