This video is a great example of making a ridiculously easy task over complicated and potentially dangerous. With the pump running just cut a small hole in the corner of the packet and then drizzle it in around the edge of the pool. Keep the bag low so wind won’t redirect the granules. It takes about 45 seconds and all you need is scissors. Easy

@mrrobvs
@mrrobvs 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on the type of shock. Check the ingredients. Usually, calcium hypochlorite (cal-hypo) gets pre-dissolved (which makes it extremely annoying to use). From my knowlege, trichlor and dichlor do not need to be pre-dissolved. Just cut a hole in the bag and pour it in with the mentality of "i'm gonna pour so little in this spot that it dissolves before it hits the bottom." Or just go buy some bleach or liquid and save yourself the trouble of adding other stuff to your pool.

Sorry, had to chime in: dissolving super-concentrated 'trichlor' shock in a bucket is not very wise and somebody could end up in the hospital- happens all the time. Better just put in a skimmer with a pump running, This video will not tell you the level of the chlorine in PPM needed to shock the pool used by pros. (should be around 10). And of course there are different kinds of shocks on the market for different pools types and applications
@drdrew3
@drdrew3 2 жыл бұрын
NEVER put highly concentrated chlorine such as shock directly in the skimmer. It should first be diluted by diluting it in the 15,000 gallon pool. You won’t have a problem right away but soon enough your plumbing will fail.

Hi! I have dead algae in the bottom of my pool, and can't get it out. My pool is crystal clear, and then i will walk around in it, and the algae disperses and causes the water to get cloudy. I've shocked my pool a bunch using hth shock, and still have my chlorine tabs floating around. (my pool is a 13' round summer waves easy setup)

A chemical will not rid the algae. If the water is cloudy then you would use a flocculant to get all of the algae micro particle to fall to the bottom (clear water) which is where you currently are. The only thing left to do is to vacuum all of the algae that has not settled on the bottom. That's the only solution for your current problem. Hope it helps :)
@drdrew3

Add clarifier then brush vigorously to suspend algae. Run filter until it clogs and then rinse. Pump will need to run 24-36 hours and brush several times but then the water will be clear

When I was a kid, my dad used to shock the pool this way, pouring it in a bucket, dissolving it and pouring it in my husband and I just got our first pool this year and we started pouring the packet directly in the pool. We quickly learned that it is a lot harder doing it that way because you have to then take the brush and brush all around the pool staring, the shock up better because when we just poured the powder straight in the pool, a lot of it would float to the bottom and sit in that will stain your liner and it’s not effective that way. To each their own know some people prefer to pour it straight in the pool but if you want it to be an easier job, dissolve it in a bucket first. My dad went to pull professionals when we got our first pull as a kid and asked every question about how to take care of it, and that is what they taught him.

Just pour shock around the edges on an inground pool. place tabs on the white steps (not ladder). If tabs sit on a liner they will fade spots on the liner. A chlorinator like Rainbow is the best way. A floating tab holder is great too but usually ends up in front of the skimmer. Tie a string to the floating tab holder and tie the other end to the edge of the pool to prevent it blocking the skimmer. And NEVER dump shock or put tabs in the skimmer!! NEVER!!!!

An explosion?!! 😂😂😂 Adding water to chlorine powder can splash the chlorine on you, cause the powder to cloud and you breathe it, and some granules may clump in the bottom and not dissolve. Pouring the granules directly in the pool all the way around the edges is just easier. But be careful of wind direction.

Don’t use stabilized shock if you use tablets. In fact don’t use tables at all, use liquid chlorine and dose CYA yourself, Make sure you know your CYA level before you shock with cal hypo or other stabilized shocks, send your pool into chlorine lock and it’ll stay green no matter what, best method is use liquid chlorine to shock your pool, no mixing, no mess, no stabilizer to ruin your water

Pool shock does not contain cyanaric acid.
@drdrew3
@drdrew3 2 жыл бұрын
Liquid chlorine does not contain stabilizer. After a few months of using it your CYA will slowly return to acceptable levels. Then you can start using pucks again but sparingly. That’s what I do. Then start shocking with 1 gallon liquid chlorine weekly. Use a non chlorine shock about 1 lb packet monthly when bound chlorine starts to appear. The mechanical aspects are even more important than the chemicals. Clean filter every 2 weeks, skim and empty baskets every few days, brush weekly and keep that pump running 8-10 hours. Every pool is different but once you get a routine it’s quick and trouble free

People say not to pour Hth into skimmers. WHY. I've always done this, for 30 years. I dissolve it in a bucket and pour it into the skimmer. It goes through the filter, cleaning it out and goes straight back into the pool, spread out across it. It goes blue very quickly. I then add the cyanuric acid the same way. WHY SHOULDN'T YOU DO THIS. Mine is a parapool with the same liner for 30 years, and the same filter system.

It's much easier to take the filter cartridge out... Reassemble your filtration system without the filter. Take the shock packets and dump them into the skimmer next to the pool let the jets do the work for about 3 minutes. Then replace the filter. That's how I add in most chemicals except calcium chloride......

You might damage your pool heaters heat exchanger that way. (If you have a heater of course)

So I've shocked my pool twice now...high chlorine when I go to bed but I wake up in the morning and none...what gives
@drdrew3
@drdrew3 2 жыл бұрын
That is exactly what happens when your CYA is too high - all the chlorine gets bound up instantly and rendered ineffective. Test your stabilizer level - sounds like you are locked up. I’ve had it happen from using 3” tablets

Should I net, vacuum and brush my pool first before shocking my pool?
@drdrew3
@drdrew3 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Vacuum and skin before adding shock. Sanitizer is more effective AFTER organic debris is removed from the pool. And brushing suspends the algae particles into the main body of water where they are more vulnerable (compared to the pool surface).

I’m in Texas with a salt water pool and we use Leslie’s salt compatible pool shock bags. They say just cut bag open and pour in and it’s done. I don’t get this video- maybe because it’s not salt water??

Depends on the type of shock you bought. Some can be added directly to the pool because they dissolve faster. And if you have a concrete pool, it's no problem either way. If you have a vinyl and the shock doesn't dissolve, it won't mix properly and bleach your liner.

Do you think there is any advantage to buying granular shock using 73 percent available chlorine over 65 percent available. Leslie Pools sells both types in 50LB Buckets and wondering if it's worth the extra $15 to $20. (depends on sale they're having the price difference). Thanks...Philip

If you have one 5 gallon bucket of shock, how much scoops do you put in the 5 gal bucket of water? I have a scooper
@DadBooom
@DadBooom 2 жыл бұрын
1 lb, typically one "sock"/bag of shock. How much water you mix it with (i.e., the size of the bucket) doesn't really matter as it'll further dilute into the pool water. You premix it to help avoid it damaging your pool liner (which can happen from applying the shock directly into the pool)

@SwimUniversity

Depends on the type of shock. Fast dissolving shock can be added directly to the pool. And if you have a concrete pool, you don't need to pre-dissolve in a bucket because you don't have a worry about bleaching a liner.

Then you can follow it. But they say that to protect themselves. Makes sense. If you find shock that doesn't require pre-dissolving, then use that. It's out there. But not all shock products are the same.
