For lighting night time shots no matter what genre, it is best to move all cool lighting outside of a window or motivate the light from an exterior source, and use warm light as interior/practical sources. Also get the warm light as soft as possible while getting the cool exterior lighting as hard/harsh as possible. You can always tweak in post but this method will give you more favorable outcomes directly into camera.

I love this! The short is a heck of a lot of fun, but you have so many wonderful ideas here for shooting. I just got my Fujifilm X-HS2 two days ago and am shooting my first short film with it (not my first short film ever, but with that specific camera) and I haven't done a live action film in a few years as I've been animating. So I'm a little rusty, but am so excited to get back to directing a film again and my wife is encouraging me to do something every month (she's volunteered to act for me too, which helps!). Your newsletters and channel has definitely been an inspiration and a kick in the rear end to get moving. Keep it up!

Really great job here. End result looked really really good, for such a short timespan and smaller budget. Thanks for the BTS on this too, very informative. I'm doing animation myself, not live action, but a lot of the ideas and camera angles and techniques kind of apply. I love all your creative camera angles.... good stuff. :)

They're not using a phone for 28 years later, there using a DOF adapter that costs 3 grand on a 2 grand phone when they could buy a freaking camcorder, or a older cinema camera, FOR THE SAME PRICE AND PICTURE. Which is why you just using the phone is actual iphone film making.

I've had some great results playing around with Log on the iPhone 15 Pro, but thought the iPhone would only be good in a "stealing shots" type film, otherwise might as well use my better camera and lenses. But this convinced me how shockingly good it is for quickly getting unique camera angles and camera movement with the least amount of gear (those dolly shots were shockingly good). I think your advice about not rigging it out is spot on.

Good story, creative shots and acting beats out great gear for indie a 100% I loved the practical effects, the creative angles A LOT! The make-up was also great being it low budget and learnt from KZbin. And the acting was weird, and a bit over the top, but it matched the mood of the short, so A+ for your gf :) My only 2 critiques would be that I just can't understand what she says. Not sure if it's the fake teeth or sound design issue. And the other might be just personal taste, but the grade feels a bit flat, almost dreamlike, hazy...which can work for something like this, but I just missed a bit more contrast. But I'm just being an overly critical person right now. It's a great movie, and especially cool only shooting with an iphone and minimal budget! For the transformation sequence, did you use stock videos, or shot all of those too?
