Just to point something out in case folks just don't comprehend exactly how "fast" this is... Signals in your brain transmit across neurons at roughly 500MPH (Sorry to bum you out people. Yes, electricity is much faster, but this is; Chemical > Electrical Impulse > Chemical > Electrical Impulse etc.). The average 'fast' reaction time for humans (the time between you SEEING something and physically REACTING to it) is roughly 200-300ms. That means that .454 is broken up into: 025ms - Rod and cone cells receive image of the 'starting' light, signal is sent to Occipital lobe for translation. 025ms-50ms - Occipital lobe registers image, signals are sent to Cerebral Cortex for additional processing/memory imprinting/cognitive reaction processing. 050ms-100ms - Brain begins to calculate what muscles to delegate what type of signals to use, where to direct nerve impulses and what muscles these impulses are to effect. Fight-or-flight responses are considered. Neruochemical signals to increase bloodflow to critical areas are released. 100-200ms - Brain successfully sends signals along nerve pathways to directed areas, heartrate begins to increase as the signals sent from the CA center of the Medulla Oblongata are received by the SA node of the heart and sent to the Vagal and Vagus nerves. 200-300ms - Muscle fibers receive the signals sent from the brain and begin to extend and contract accordingly. 300-454ms (154ms) - The pistol is removed from holster, aimed and fired at the target for a successful hit. So .. Yeah. That's F#%*ing fast.

@SkirnirW
@SkirnirW 5 жыл бұрын
@@CiskoMasterGunfighter No problem. To be honest, I always thought that nerve-signals traveled much faster. Turns out, they're relatively slow due to the body using both chemical AND electrical signals in tandem. Bright-side, based on your reaction-time and physical speed, you LITERALLY are moving as fast as you 'think'. :D By the way, I LOVED that Mythbuster episode you starred in. You're legendary!

This is propably as good a place as any to ask this... If you had a Single Action Revolver in each of your hands and 12 bad guys in front of you, what would be the fastest method to get those 12 shots off? Thumbing both at the same time or fanning one after another?

@cybelli80
@cybelli80 2 жыл бұрын
@@keyboard1234567890 Fanning is going to be extremely fast compared to thumbing, you have to pull back the hammer each shot for a single action. The answer is also going to largely depend on: Can you land all the shots? Using two revolvers at once and actively shooting two different groups of people is going to require a large amount of hand eye coordination. I want to say off the top of my head that if we assume 'Someone could fan 6 shots and land all 6 shots' you'd be better off fanning both guns individually. Realistically you'd be better off using each gun one at a time, and just pulling the hammer back after each well placed shot.

If you're shooting at people, thumbing because fanning tends to miss a lot, and fanning usually requires 2 hands so you could have to draw the other gun after you're done with the first one. Now if you are in a actual fight? thumbing without a single doubt.

Back in the Old West, and with heavy blackpowder (or later conversions) guns like the Walker, Army, etc, were these techniques ever practiced (not necessarily in duels since they were so rare)? Or is it a western movie/modern competition thing? Could sloppy executed fanning/thumbing lead to chainfire with one of those classic guns?

Would thumbing be worse practically? Because if you have to draw your gun from a regular position, say, arms to your sides, then you have to put your hand and fingers in the precisely correct positions to make sure that you don't fumble with the hammer or take too long to draw the gun, taking about as much time as simply pulling out the gun, then pulling the hammer. I think it's for that reason that it's often recommended to clear the holster, then cock the hammer as you're moving the gun to an aiming position. Though, I don't think that someone as masterful as yourself with the quickdraw would have as much issue with it, would it still be faster from a neutral position to fan it instead? Edit: Also, I think it would be a lot safer, considering with fanning you don't have to exercise trigger discipline...

Ivan Petropov I'm not familiar with the gun, but if it's tuned properly it should be OK

Cisko Master Gunfighter it's just got small internals so I was curious if you can only do that to guns that are larger with more material in the Sears, springs, ECT. it's well timed just my backup carry.

Probably, but our gun club has a few quick draw competitions every year. And of course cowboy day. It's funny, quick draw practice is probably more helpfull in real life situations than is precision shooting. Like you said though, hopefully neither will be needed in real life

But there are lots of cuts, so I guess not everything went that smooth, still impressive drawing. I guess I invest into defense and rabbitish running skills, if it comes to a showdown. lol

No it wouldn't work in the same way. Fanning the hammer is where you hold the trigger (which stops the hammer from cocking) while you bring the hammer back again and again really fast. Airsoft guns use compressed air or gas, so I don't think it would work

I thought fanning was you just squeezed the trigger permanently and each fan caused the hammer to rock back and spring forth independently to detonate the cartridge, so you didn't even pull the trigger as always retracted. And thumbing, isn't it more simple to just pull the hammer back by pulling on the trigger? Or does the strength required to do this slow everything down? So many thoughts and techniques, and probably differs gun by gun. Thumbing, Fanning, sounds sexual.

Rhodesia Mukiwa these are single action revolvers, the trigger won't pull the hammer back. To shoot them, you have to pull the hammer back yourself.
