I know that the store is probably aware and allowed them to do what they did in this video- tasting, opening whatever- but I really hope this doesn't spread an idea that you can do whatever in an asian supermarket like this. The only section of the store where that stuff is really tolerated is in the produce section... Without a disclaimer or anything, I'm worried that this would give some people- obviously those who have had no experience in stores like this, the target audience- incentive to act like she does in the video. I have the faith that most people have the common sense to understand that, but seeing the number of comments that don't even realise that this was filmed like that with permission...

Yes, they have permission to film-- that's not the point. The point is that the practice of sampling before paying is not acceptable in Chinese markets, and someone who has only been to western markets where this is tolerated might see this video and think the host's behavior is just an extension of this accepted practice in western markets. There's a difference of cultural expectations here that the video does not explain, and that someone could get into trouble for without understanding this.

I think it's weird the way she explains things. I personally don't like way she opens things from the aisle. Maybe she can pick up an item and explain while the scene changes to a close up of the opened item on a plate, ready to be served, kinda of like how Tasty has a close up shot of their finished dish. And then it can cut back to her and her going on to grab another item and then the close up/serving shot comes up again. Just an example of what they can change for their future videos, it would at least let us know how you can serve it and how it can be cooked/prepared. I just think it's bizarre the way she manhandles the produce, and then opens up bags in the aisles to munch on. It comes across very rude.

I'm baffled by everyone's comments about opening packages in the store. Of course she isn't promoting opening items, nor is she stealing, or putting open items back on the shelf. This is a show!! Specifically a show in a series, this one is to help people who are intimidated by the overwhelming grandeur and sheer mountain of choices in Asian markets. She's tasting things in the aisle so we don't have to sit through unnecessary cuts scenes of her tasting things at another location. I'm personally very glad she showing, tasting, and describing items. Not just as a way to encourage people to step outside their routine shopping experience, but also as an example to other channels on how to shot videos in groceries and show the products and services (i.e. get permission first, don't be annoying or sketchy in stores, and don't make a lot of cut scenes or voiceovers). I'm very excited for this series! I love exploring new stores and gaining new appreciation for other cultures food. I'm also very happy with the format, I wish it was a longer video. Thank you, Epicurious! And thank you other KZbin channels that demonstrate and encourage people to step out of the Walmart "Ethnic" sections.

What I really love from this video is about bringing back the culture of walk-in market and appreciating farm produces to counter the growing trend of online shopping. Like seriously, get out from your house, people. Treat yourself with the authentic experience of market, feeling, smelling, and tasting the fresh produces. The bright colors of vegetables, the sharp aroma of cheese, the fresh aroma of fish and meat, the zingy aroma of spice racks.

Dear Epicurious, perhaps send someone who actually understands the market they're in to do these videos. Great example is Maangchi, fantastic Korean cook on KZbin who did a Korean market intro for those of us actually trying to learn something.

How can everyone criticize her for opening food packets when the intent of doing so in a video like this is exceedingly obvious? People who need assistance in an Asian food market are probably also the same kind of people who might need a little encouragement to try new things, and they might be afraid of some of the unfamiliar items in the store. She opened the pickled veg at the beginning to show that it's just another food item that you can buy and use like any other. Opening the interesting sounding snack at around 10:45 to demonstrate that unknown =/= bad. Beyond "having permission" the producers of the show obviously thought about their audience and made the choice with the shop owner about the best way to proceed, and I bet they both agreed that this was an excellent way to showcase how fresh and available all the items were. The intent of the video is to make the market less "exotic", "foreign", and scary, and present it as something that can be acessible for everyone. That's good for the market and the populations that rely on it, and it's good for the people who are trying new things.

Kylie Perry I can see the good intentions they have with everything she does and the friendly way she talks, but if the "new" things that people take from this video is how you can taste everything right in the aisle of an asian supermarket and did not show her taking it aside to pay for it later, it might become problematic. At least show her putting aside the things she sampled, we usually have trolleys for that. Even if by the permission she wasn't required to buy the stuff she sampled, then pretend that she will buy it later, just for this video, or say straight up that she was allowed to do these things by the owner. Is this or is it not a How To video?
@iss38886 жыл бұрын
Kylie Perry. I can see the good intentions. But the way how the video is created might give children and stupid people the wrong impression. The title also ain't helping. I would had appreciate if she purchased her items and ate it at the table. There also should had been a warning for stupid people to understand WTF she is doing. Lol

I understand how it can be conceived as "whitesplaining", but she is the host of this series, and they have not just Asian markets in this series as well... And I think it's nice that she's introducing things from my culture to a broad audience. Also, I have a lot of white/non-Asian friends that get intimidated or grossed out when I show them Asian food or products, and I think that this helps show them that Asian food can suite to a western palate as well.
@yolkyolk31486 жыл бұрын
I mean it's kind of obvious that this video is intended as an introduction for white people or people who are not Chinese/asian to the idea of an asian supermarket. It's a given that none of this will be new info to a Chinese/asian person who is already familiar. So your comment is kind of stupid.

Lol when she talks about the gigantic bags of rice is so true. She seems impressed by the quantity of one single bag when we have 5 of them in my household just because we know it's going down and fast and we're too lazy to go back to buy some more haha

ISS I was thinking the same thing. Touching items in a grocery store is gross enough. She bought food in "cardboard" containers and sat at a table. Why not with the foods she's about to taste?

She should not open up and try the products right on the aisles. Because regular customers should not do that, and this video is intended for new regular customers. PS I read all these comments here and how she must have gotten permission but again whose this video is for? Regular new customers. I can imagine new customers may think opening products is a done approoved thing in asian store.

nahhh here's the _real_ way to shop in an asian market, straight from yr friendly neighborhood filipina. when you're in the market you think: - "is that a dinner food?" - "is that a party food?" (and by extension, the next morning's leftover-breakfast-food) - "that looks familiar. i'm obligated by nostalgia to eat it again" (even if you've never seen it before in your life) and then you stock up on enough food for the next 5 months
