Oh yeah i hate it too when i told someone that i'm deaf and the person is like "Oh should i talk louder?" And i'm like "No, I'm just going to read your lips" but the person talks louder and LOUDER and ughh

I am hearing but am trying to learn sign language. It’s always interested me and I want to be able to avoid situations like that and make everyone feel comfortable. Are there any tips you would give me about learning ASL?
@xannis77844 жыл бұрын
Emily Blakeman You definitely should learn ASL from someone who‘s deaf! Maybe u can find some local ASL-classes nearby? Or you could look up Bill Vicars, he‘s deaf and he‘s cool :)

Xan Nis I do online school through Florida Virtual School (FLVS) and I am now taking it through that. Then not only do I get to learn a language that has always peaked my interests but I can get my high school language credit.

Amy Martinez this is one of the few phrases in sign that I know, so thanks for asking! I only know because you asked and they answered :)

Thank you so much for this video! Honestly, this has been extremely helpful for me! I appreciate that you not only told us how to ask respectfully, but also what is disrespectful. I think That's just as important, so that I never unintentionally disrespect someone or cause them any discomfort. You guys are wonderful! Thank you!

I only know super simple things in ASL, from the ASL app. I use it when I'm waiting for class to start or have free time and decide to learn a few words. So I love when y'all teach me new things!

So helpful! I am a flight attendant, and we are required to give a personal safty instruction to people who are deaf or hard of hearing. I have only had to do this ones so far, but I used the safty card, pointed to the picture and then the location in the plane.

This is great! I'm teaching myself ASL during all my time at home this past year. I figured it'd be a good skill to have under my proverbial belt. Having the abaility to ask this particular question really helps being a novice. Thank you!

This is such an old video, but this is making me think of my tiny mouth. I have a small mouth plus a lisp. Even hearing people can not understand me when I mouth words or talk sometimes. When someone who is deaf says they can read lips, I always feel like apologising.

It was hard for me not to enunciate at the beginning but as I got more fluent in ASL I found myself talking more and more like I would do normally, that's from my experience but don't know if it is the same for others.

I had a question I was wondering if you guys could answer! I'm a barista at Starbucks and I know a little bit of sign language like coffee and what would you like to drink but I was wondering if you could teach me how to say "anything else I can get for you today" Also, is there anything I shouldn't to? Is asking them to sign slower rude? Even if I don't know a lot of signing? I'm trying to learn as much I can because we have a high volume of the hearing impaired!:-) Love this channel so much too! Thank you so much for all the help!:-)

Great video! I was mostly deaf in one ear until I got it corrected, but most of my sign language comes from my little brother because he signs and speaks (since he can't speak well but can hear just fine) There's this deaf girl in my math class and she's really pretty and nice, so I learned "can you read lips", "can you talk," "I can't sign," and "sorry." Because she's REALLY PRETTY AND HAS NICE MAKEUP *swoon*

20201112 - Today you left me with a question. Usually no one wants to hurt the others feeling, so do you know any deaf people from other country? Do they have similar disgusting situations that the hearing people should avoid doing? Is Ryan's visual memory better than Elen's?

i am trying to learn some asl but its so hard. doing it slowly i can understand alittle. but the hand gesture going fast is hard to keep track. but i am working on it. few years back that show switched at birth aired and i loved sign language and it educated me . plus i think more people need to learn that language . this may sound ignorant , but i have a question . how did you learn to read as a child? i have a learning disability . reading growing up was alittle difficult pronouncing words. thats coming from a hearing person. but how do teach deaf students ? i'm just curious. because teachers taught me to sound out the words, to hear it out loud. how different was it for you? wow i sound awful i am sorry

I've seen quite a few videos with deaf people being annoyed with the question of if they can read lips. Why is that? Is it how it's asked or some other reasons? Maybe the oppression of oralism from history to present day? I'm a bit hard of hearing and can't hear what people say in a noisy environment. I can't speak orally. My everyday language is Swedish sign language. I get the question a lot. To me it's just a simple yes or no question. To others it's obviously more emotionally charged. Please enlighten me on this?

This video is awesome! I'll keep a lookout for more of your videos. I'm kind of a newbie, but have been practicing a lot; and plus I'm hard of hearing, so it definitely helps. I was actually looking up how to ask this because I had to ask someone today if they could read lips, and I told them i didn't know how to sign it, so I just kind of pointed to my lips with my brows raised, but she understood. Is it correct to ask using the sign for "you" then the sign for "read lips" with eyebrows raised? It's a yes or no question, so that sounds like it would do.

Tiffany Scarlett yes! That would be a great way to ask someone if they read lips worth sign language ☺️👍
