Thank you very very much for this video!! I just recieved my first (and after this, the last!) Daiwa reel, and it was of course off when laying on the line. I got it done but the sweat ran cold trying to get that tiny rubber band off without snapping it! 😂 I just cannot understand why a premium reel producer can't get the shims right from the factory. I never ever had this problem with any Shimano reel, only with a Abu Garcia Cardinal SX, and they at least had the good sense to put the shims outermost on the shaft...
@ZackBostick Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Happy to be of help. To be honest, sometimes reels are messed with before landing at home. For instance, some tackle shops will let customers hold and play around with the reel to see how they like it. Unfortunately, a lot of people like to tighten the drag to max and leave it there. Over time, this causes the parts on the spool shaft to compress. Causing issues like this. Whenever I’m done with using my reels, I loosen the drag all the way during storage.

I had this issue on my new reel… It wasn’t the plastic washers either. It’s simply my error, when self spooling your line you want to spool the first few yards slowly until it fills your spool from top to bottom and you realize it’s even. When you realize it’s even from top to bottom you can full blown spool it faster. Trust me it works!

What would you recommend for someone who's line keeps digging in to the spool itself? Great vid!
@ZackBostick4 жыл бұрын
Hey Mason, im guessing you are using braid? The most common issue is laying the braid on tight enough. When spooling, pressure needs to be added to keep it from doing that. Can you take a finger nail and dig it into the spool fairly easily?

Daiwa spinning reels with an 'ABS spool', such as the BG, are designed to have a cone shaped line profile.
@ZackBostick3 жыл бұрын
Have heard some reels do have a slight cone, but this had a whole ring exposed on the bottom with the top maxed out. I have 3 other of the same reel but different sizes that have and always have had flat line lay. After, I was able to put much more line on and no more wind knots.
@davidcarley85663 жыл бұрын
@@ZackBostick yep, your line profile might have been too cone shaped, overly cone shaped. But the profile is not really designed to be parallel sided -- but if it works, it works! Newer Daiwa spinning reels like the new Saltiga, new Certates have a new spool design which is more like Shimano's. I think it's considerably better than the old ABS idea.

@ZackBostick5 ай бұрын
In general all spinning reels will lay line up and down the spool. Some spool tighter, some not. My best guess is the gear (or one of them) is not catching so the spool stays in same position. I’d stop the headaches of untangling line and paying for new line and get a different reel. The bg is a great reel that is very versatile. I’ve seen them new on marketplace for under $70 for 4K size

Bro thank you so much for the video. I am looking At my new BGMQ 4000 Daiwa. Instructions with the reel are not the best. I have three of those washers that you lost in the past lol otherwise the instructions don’t make it clear that they are for that purpose. Until today I never knew there was a REEL made where the line could go on incorrectly and have an INCLUDED solution to adjust it. Main question is why didn’t Daiwa build it to where it lays on in a uniform manner? WTH?
@ZackBostick2 жыл бұрын
No problem at all! Happy to help :) They make great reels, and they do typically come with line lay in the manner it is supposed to. The problem is, sometimes after much use and/or someone leaves the drag tight after fishing, the washers begin to give. The constant compression of the drag system on the washers flattens them at a faster rate. Which leads to problems such as this. That’s a main reason I don’t buy display models. And if i buy one used, one of the first things I check is if the reel’s drag is handed to me locked down. Usually means they store it in that manner.
@RichM04102 жыл бұрын

I am confused on what you mean.. if it’s literally getting caught under the spool, sounds like you’re using either very thick line and or over spooled it. Or that when retrieving you don’t have tension to the lure or bait. Could be a combo of very heavy mono mixed with retrieving very little weight.

Thanks, this has been pissing me off! Been avoiding using the reel. My question is why TF would they do this!?
@ZackBostick Жыл бұрын
No problem! Biggest issue is storage. Every time I am done using any reel I loosen the drag as much as possible. What happens is, if it is stored with pressure (drag on) everything gets compressed and over time it loses its maximum range of motion. lol, good question!

I had the same problem with the exact same reel, diawa sucks ass

So Daiwa engineering makes reverse taper spool and you defeat the purpose hmm…

Don’t over think it. Says for spinning reels. Not specifically Bg.

Probably better off converting the rotary motion to linear motion using a crank and rod going to another gear or flywheel that’s oriented along the appropriate axis. (If the spool gear is oriented along what we’ll call the z axis, it’s driving a linear actuator along the z axis to a flywheel oriented flat along the x axis) with another linear actuator so that we can convert the motion from the z axis to the x axis. Then put a smooth rod along the x axis and a carrier of some kind that the line sits inside of allowing the carrier to move freely on the smooth rod. This solves a few different problems. 1) it can easily be adjusted to move at the appropriate speed along the x axis at multiple different points allowing for a large amount of reduction 2) since you’re not using a screw actuator you don’t have to solve the problem of getting the carrier back to where it came from without spinning the rod in reverse and 3) it’s simple with few points of failure. I’d suggest a large reduction to start. Do this by welding the connecting rods to the far edge of the inside of the rotary motion wheels. This will make the rotary wheels spin slower than the spool meaning the line will move from left to right much slower. There’s some math you can do to figure out an exact amount of reduction but you can find that freely online. But basically every time the spool rotates once you want the linear motion to change by the width of the line. The ratio of the circumference of the spool to the width of the line will give you that number. But alas, the size of the spool is always changing diameter so you’ll have to use averages and just do your best. I’d start with like 25:1 and see where that lands you. You can always increase the reduction between the first rotary wheel and the spool too to decrease the speed of the linear actuation

I am very confused bc I thought most bushings were round…maybe cylindrical but still round. Like bushings on suspension parts and such. I’m sure the stainless steel washer would work to replace the shim :)
@fishingtrollspinninglabara72413 жыл бұрын
Or just buy a Shimano.

True! Last one I fixed did happen to be a small Shimano though. But yes, overall, shimano seem to be way less problematic

I got my reel second hand so I don’t have the box and the washers so what do I do? It’s a pflueger salt 080sw spinning reel
@ZackBostick5 ай бұрын
Either google search the part or you can make them yourself. I know a lot of people who use bottle caps that are cut down. But I’ll tell you before hand, it can get nerve racking (unspooling and respooling) when trying to get the right thickness of the shims. But I’d contact customer support with the company and see if they can sell some to you directly.
