In this video, I show you a FUN way to learn ANY SONG. Today we use Elvis Presley's Suspicious Minds as a great example of how to sing any song you choose. Come along, and let's learn it together!

I can almost hear the troll mockers now, saying "Oh yeah, right, you're going to teach us to sing any song?"
What I'm going to do is give you the tools to understand how to break songs down and look at each part of this song individually so that you can take the correct steps towards working on sections of the song, connecting those sections, and then singing the songs that you love with greater ease and confidence.

I’m getting a little better as I go on. I’m learning to sing because my therapist said that it would be good in aiding my recovery from PTSD. And because I’ve always wanted to learn.

Lots of backing/karaoke on Spotify, with and without vocals, we use them all the time in Band practice, when learning Covers, as the mix is often simpler than originals, so also good for instrumentation, another good source is midi/midikaraoke, which is good for keying voice to. Note, if you want to play with Musicians, Guitarists do not like changing the Key to stuff with solos, i.e WONT, some songs are just meant to be sung in a certain key, live wit h it!

I do that too, often I rip it as a wav and put it in my recording program and record my singing, with fx and all and analyze it afterwards as a practice. Actually very helpful. 🙂

Always uplifting, feel good content, thanks Ken. Noticeable to me is how much more relaxed and smoother you sounded right at the end, as opposed to earlier trying to cater to the Elvis sound. Goes to show while its tempting to try and copy the person who made a song famous, it doesn't have to be the only way sing it.

The engineer you spoke of would probably have had the same reaction to Elvis Presley. There is a story in which he made over 100 recordings of Heartbreak Hotel. Then listened to them all and settled on the version that was released. While the artist in the sound track may have been attempting to sound like Elvis, he erred in that he was singing an octave too high. Elvis has a deeper baritone voice and you have to bring your base voice up to that level in order to get a proper sound. It's much easier when your vocal octave is on par with his, but any baritone that puts the effort into it should be able to get pretty close to sounding like Elvis. It takes a whole lot of practice to get his style down. When I was a teen, I used listening to songs, anytime I was listening to a base/baritone, I would try to sound just like them. The end result of that is years later, my mom had an Elvis song on and I started singing along with it and she looked at me and said: "You sound just like Elvis." Yeah, sure, I could do that with a song playing but if ya turned off the recording, I would loose his sound in my head and stop sounding like him. I don't think I could do that now. Too many years of not singing regularly.

i tend to try to mimic the sound of the original song. Im very aware that i dont have the range or ability to do so. i need to "settle into" and accept my vocal limitations.... for the record, have a great voice....in the shower....and alone.... i can do a decent rendition of thunder road by springsteen...but it comes out with a twang....

Re: beginners not liking the sound of their own voice: You know, I used to feel bad about my voice, and would "hide" it in the mix...but I've read that Hendrix also didn't like his voice, and would do the same. And I know he's not regarded as a "great" singer (although to me, he's a great ROCK singer), I'd "kill" for his vocal tone and swag. But knowing that about him, contrasted with my appreciation of his voice, did give me confidence to put my voice up higher in the mix than I used to.

I remember Reba saying that anyone can sing if they find the right song and tone for their voice. It seems most of us get discouraged because the song is too high or low and we strain.
