Hi. I'm Cari Cole. I'm a celebrity vocal coach and artist development expert and I help artists find their voice, craft their music, and create successful music careers. I've worked with Donald Fagen from Steely Dan, Courtney Love from Hole. I've worked with the band Journey. I'm going to teach you how to be a better singer and performer.
So I'm going to give you a few pointers here today for how to sing like John Mayer and the first thing about John is he is definitely coming from a Blues and R&B background. He sings fairly lightly, like he doesn't use a heavy belt and he's got a pretty smooth transition into falsetto because of it.
So you know, if you want to sing more like him you're going to use a little bit more of a lighter approach. And he's got a lot of Blues styling in his pronunciation and in his in melody choices. He's also an awesome songwriter so the two are again, you know, not mutually exclusive. They go together.
Also about John he really is an avid student. He went to Berkeley School of Music and he studies hard and he's trained his voice. When he first came out with his first single 'Your Body is a Wonderland' we all were wondering what he was saying because his diction was, you know, not so perfect. And he's cleaned that up a little bit over time and for the purpose really of being able to hear his lyrics a little bit more.
But he still, you know, uses his own phrasing and, you know, you don't want to clean it up too much in pop music because you want it to be conversational and natural, and I feel like he really accomplishes that. So if you want to sing more like him, really listen to Blues but sing it a little bit lighter and make that transition into falsetto smoother. Work your falsetto as well.
And those are some of the elements that make John Mayer, John Mayer. You know you want to sound a little bit more like him but remember you also want to sound like you. So you want to take elements, pieces of those people, and integrate them into who you are.

he was a avid student, doesn't have to just be college, he spent hours on end listening to blues records of srv, bb king, jimi hendrix, eric clapton etc and learning the songs in them, woodshedding to the point where a 17 year John Mayer was reminiscent of srv

I liked this video. It laid out the basis for what you need to know to sing like john mayer. You'd have to be a drugged experimental chimpanzee to not be able to use this information to sing like John. I used this and now I'm light years ahead of where I was last night, EXCELLENT VIDEO! If you listen to his early stuff, the earlier you go back, the sloppier his singing gets. So yeah, he's definitely gotten better.

As a thanks for the video, I’m going to teach you how to become a rocket scientist. Think about rockets a lot. Watch lots of rocket launches. Read books on rockets and try building some. Take your time. Good luck

one thing about john is he relaxes his vocal cords, creating a slight air leak, giving the light breathy effect. doing this too much is not good for your voice. i think his alternating to falsetto keeps his cords in shape with clean pitch.
