Learn how slip punches as Everlast Nutrition fitness trainer Mike Gales walks you through it step by step.
Slipping punches is an essential technique in boxing that allows a fighter to evade punches while remaining in a position to counterattack. It involves quickly and subtly moving the head to the side or slightly back, avoiding the incoming punch. This technique is particularly effective against straight punches such as jabs and crosses, which are more predictable in their trajectory.
Slipping punches is important for several reasons. Firstly, it allows a boxer to avoid taking unnecessary damage, reducing the chances of being knocked out or sustaining a serious injury. Secondly, it allows the boxer to stay in range and maintain their position to counter-attack. Thirdly, it can deceive the opponent, who may think their punch landed, when in fact it did not, leaving them more open to counter-attacks.
Slipping punches also improves a boxer's defensive awareness, reaction time and head movement, by constantly practicing it, boxers will become better at reading their opponents punches, and anticipating them, which is crucial to avoiding getting hit, this technique also helps to conserve energy, since avoiding punches is less tiring than blocking or parrying them.
In summary, slipping punches is an essential technique in boxing that allows fighters to evade punches while remaining in position to counter-attack, reduces the chances of getting hurt and improve defensive awareness, reaction time, head movement and it conserves energy.

You're welcome. The way you break stuff down is clear and concise. I used to assist with a beginner's boxing class when I was stationed overseas. Some friends wanted to start working out, so I set up grappling mat and bags in my garage. It's been good so far and I'm always looking for good lessons to give them. Again, thanks. BTW, we use lots of Everlast stuff.

Yesterday i was at a sort of convention, not a real tournament. It was amateur rules with 3 rounds of 1 minute and a half each, all my partners (the 3 of them had already fougth and the youngest won the silver medal in the national games of my country) did pretty well but i didn't even last one round because my opponent dominated me very easily so the ref decided to stop the figth. You could say it sort of was my first real figth and getting beat the way i got beat was really frustating, but after watching this video and the bob and weave one, am starting to realize some of the things i could have done to put more of a figth and not simply being a sandbag. Thanks for the tips, the day im writting theres no boxing lessions but ill make sure to practice this on my own.

Thanks for watching. Boxing is the sport of repetition abs practice. The more that you drill and practice the less you will have to think of when you fight. Your opponents had more practice than you. But now you know what to expect. You have more experience now and next time you’ll be ready 😎😎😎😎😎

@POOR PIRANO like i said not necessarily, i did not say 'never to do so' it also depends if the fighter is naturally athletic they may get away with it, there are fighters that may not be in the best shape because of last minute weight cuts or they dont want to eat right and go up a weight class, they may not be able to get away with it.

It did this and bob and wave in a sparring session. I hit my opponent a few times in the face and I moved out of range. My opponent couldn't hit me. My coach said that I would win matches moving like this, but with sparring its like boxing like a dick. I mean wtf?
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not too sure what he means... you should always spar how you would fight. That way during a real match all of that repetition will pay off. It's up tp your opponent to adapt to your style. That's like calling Tyson or Frazier a dick because they have great head movement. You want to be elusive in that ring and if you find that you can hit your opponents and the can't hit you.... well congratulations...you're boxing well : )

I'm still kind of not sure how one is able to do this - say against a fast jab, you'd need the reflexes of a damn cat (I understand slipping a punch from some slow drunk guy who telegraphs his punches to the extreme though :)) - you mentioned the markings on the road analogy, but I'm still not sure what you were suggesting. Is there a way to really get a kind of 'head start' on the oncoming punch that I missed in the vid?

I've seen some videos that say never to bend at the hips when slipping because it is harder to counter off of it, but that really doesn't happen. Should I be bending at the hip, and if so what are the advantages?
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting , Perhaps I should have been more clear in the video, you must not simply bend at the hip or waste...it’s the bending of your leg that is the key. That will automatically cause you to bend at the hip. The majority of the slip is done from the leg, that way you will still have leverage to counter punch. Trying to only bend at the the leg will be tough ... it also limit your mobility. So ...bend first at the leg , that will cause a slight bend at the hip and you’ll be safely out of the kill zone yet still have balance and leverage to counter 😎😎

We don't slip by bending at the waist and hips, you do it from the knees. You are sacrificing your stance and balance. Orthodox stance, to slip right bend the front knee, to slip left bend the rear. This keeps you mobile and balanced so you can throw a counter punch back at your opponent and be able to side step or pivot better. If you get caught with a good shot the way you are showing it, you will get knocked down.

If I am a orthodox fighter how do I slip a cross from a southpaw fighter!? plz help!!
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 7 жыл бұрын
The first southpaw i ever sparred with was Adonis Stevenson, and let me tell you that people don't realize how skillful he really is or how hard he hits.lol..i wish i could tell you that i was able to slip his cross... but nope... he was easily able to catch me. But I learned very quickly to circle to your left to avoid that south paw cross. If you try to slip a southpaw's cross to your right, you may get hit and hit hard as they are used to orthodox fighters slipping to that direction. I am planning on doing a whole video on this topic...but in the mean time circle to your left as often as possible and use your own cross inside of his. as long as your shoulder is high as you throw your cross it will be tough for him to land his shot. also if you stay in close quarters it nullifies the southpaw advantage a little bit...just be cautious to smother his shots or tie up leaning to your left and not to your right. But that was a great question... and i think a video will be worth a million words : )

Should i ever lean in a fight or slip
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting; If you do lean in, it could be to smother a shot as you keep your guard up high and tight. ( we have a video on blocking punches and there is a section at the end of that video about stepping in to smother shots) You would be safer to slip outside of the path of incoming punches if possible.... yet you will find guys with amazing speed like Roy Jones, Mayweather or Lomenchenko that will lean their head in to entice their opponent to punch...but it's a trap to set up a powerful counterpunch : )

I respectfully disagree with bending at the waist. It puts a lot of pressure on your lower back. Instead bend at the knee and divert pressure to the legs by leaning on them.

Im no pro but if you move from feet to feet to be abel to slip easier and qicker (or punch) your opponent will afte a while be abel to see a pattern in your logements. Which will make it easier to slip or block it for that person. Im not saying you should not do it at all, but be aware of it. Especially with your arms.

American boxing style is the best for getting inside taller opponent

thanks for commenting ...and Mike Tyson or Joe Frazier are the best examples...they were both shorter men who always fought way taller opponents.

What drills can I do to slip almost every punch my opponent gives to me?
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting; Aside from the slip drills with a partner that are in this video, drills that improve your reflexes will help. The speed bad is great for getting your eyes used to something moving quickly towards your face. The double-ended bag is good to get your head moving out of the path of the punches. If I were to pick only one drill to really help your slips, it would be, to get a partner and have him throw the jab or cross. You practice slipping to the outside of that punch and then pivot, to force your partner to have to reset his angle of attack. After you slip a punch, two at the most, it is better if you pivot away out of his punching range. Staying within range and trying to slip every punch that comes at you is very risky and takes great reflexes (which sadly I dont have : ) ) and so practice slipping one or two punches with your partner and the pivot away : )

He is a true legend...and what people always fail to realize is that he was always the way smaller guy. He's only 5'11 and was fighting guys that are 6'4 and 6'5. He doesn't get the full credit he deserves : )

Bodybuilding guy drops his hands when he slips and uses too much waist and not enough legs. Tall thin guy is begging for an uppercut. There are better coaches available. Check out Fran Sands, Tony Jeffries and Precision Striking.
