I'm a pretty flexible guy but I learned early on not to rely too much on it for guard retention or good passers put you in really bad positions like this

I've been using my sorta.. "flexible guard" for 15 years and it pisses everyone off. Ive rolled with lots and lots of black belts and I can think of only a 3 or 4 times they passed my guard against my will, and each time I learned how to keep the next guy from doing it based off what I learned. Basically the only person taking the full mount or side control on me are huge guys with strength that can just overpower me and contort my body. In a tournament with weight classes, this never happened to me so I'm not worried about it.

Why is the palm up collar grip important (as opposed to palm down)?

Ясно. Заворачиваем в бублик, потом доминируем и унижаем.
