Great video. The only issue I have is the advice to "snap" the wrist, which tends to suggest that you use the wrist muscles to power the racket head. Yet your demo shows a very limp, well-oiled hinge of a wrist, powered only by the core, shoulder, triceps and forearm muscles. That, I believe, is what allows you to generate maximum racket head speed. Deliberating engaging the wrist muscles would tend to decrease racket head speed, just as it would in a service motion.

jacksonlar “snapping the wrist” can certainly be misinterpreted so we understand the concern. We hope the image that is created is that similar to the snapping of a bullwhip. Great description of the biomechanics. Thanks for sharing!

Good lesson today! I can totally visualize Sampras in the position with the racquet snapping down before the elbow but, I’ve never heard that key point verbalized before. 👍🏻

Thank you so much. I play good ground strokes to setup the point and so often I end up missing the overhead smash to finish the point. This was very helpful.

Nate - did you injure your wrist? I did recently, and a) I got a Wrist Widget & really like it (I think I saw you with one on a video a few days back?) and b) my wrist is taped up right now exactly like yours, on either side of the ulnar. I hate to say "misery loves company" but it kinda makes me feel better to see that it happens to players better than 4.0 too.

Dan Smith hey Dan, been suffering from a TFCC tear for a few years now. The surgery for it is relatively ineffective if you plan to continue playing tennis. I find taping the tendon down is the most effective resource and often use the wrist widget to assist it as well. Unfortunately it tends to be a fairly common injury for tennis players. Poor Delpo has had plenty of experience with it. Hope you’re healing up and enjoying the game!

My HS coach would buy us a milkshake if we hit one of these shots in a match. So yeah...I know this shot as a "Milkshake." Nice lesson. :)

How hard do you need to hit the ball? What grip tightness is proper?

J Look keep the grip fairly loose, w/ moderate power. Getting on top of the ball is the most important aspect.

i guess about 2/3 the power of your 1st serve will be enough. the key is getting the angle right, if angle too steep the ball will just fly towards the baseline, if too sharp the 2nd bound will probably just land near the baseline, which is an easy return. so you probably want to make contact at about a 45 degree angle on top of the ball. you also want the racket snapping downwards like mentioned in this video, so it will produce topspin to make the ball bounce higher like the kick serve,
