Yes, all of these could be solved quicker by factoring, but JG is just showing another method of solving. Sometimes factoring is not possible, or the factors are not readily seen (eg; 1357=23*59). That leaves two methods, completing the square, or the quadratic formula. Choose your weapon. I use both methods just to keep in practice with both. If you solve the general equation ax^2 + bx + c = 0, the answer you get is the quadratic formula. I think that is pretty neat. Also in the real world you quite often end up with radicals and imaginary numbers in your answers.

If you take the squareroot of something that is squared then you will get the absolute value of that expression. For example square root of (x+2)^2 is absolute value of (x+2) so |x+2| and an exact number's square root is always positive for example 16's is 4. You can get the two solutions by solving the following equation |x+2|=4 (it is just an example). This is how it is correct. I am NOT here to judge you or anything, I have been watching for like 2 years. Keep it up you do a great work. Take care. Sorry for the grammatic mistakes I am a hungarian.

I'm in differential equations now and I still have no idea why this method exists. Quadratic formula is: 1) much easier to memorize (and is used far more frequently for "muscle memory") 2) ALWAYS works on every quadratic (whereas this only works in special cases) 3) Can be punched into a calculator (while this is factoring process and must be worked out manually) Any mathematician or engineer want to explain what purpose this has in anything?

I think it's a good idea to know how things could be done without calculators and technology, otherwise you're not learning how to solve quadratic equations, you're learning how to use a calculator. Secondly, completing the square is useful for drawing quadratic equations. If you complete the square and get an equation of, for example, ((x+3)^2)+2. You know that that graph is the graph of x^2 shifted 3 to the left and 2 up. Which may be quicker than using a calculator.

The first example x² + 2x - 15 = 0 (x - 3)(x + 5) = 0 x = 3, x = 5 Finding factors can be complicated for some students especially when a ≠ 0 So we have the quadratic formula or completing the square which is just factoring but easier x² + 2x - 15 = 0 x² + 2x + 1 = 16 (x + 1)² = 16 x + 1 = ±4 x = -5, x = 3 Before using the quadratic formula let's prove it by completing the square ax² + bx + c = 0 x² + bx/a + b²/4a² = -c/a + b/4a² sqrt((x + b/2a))² = sqrt(-c/a + b²/4a²) (x + b/2a) = ± sqrt(b² -4ac)/2a x = -b ± sqrt(b² + 4ac)/2a x = [-2 ± sqrt(4 - 4(1)(-15)]/2(1) x = (-2 ± 8)/2 x = -5, x = 3

The second equation solved in 10 seconds : Look for 2 factors of 12, that add together make 7? Answer : +3 & +4 (3x4=12, 3+4=7). The answer (when the coefficient of square x is 1) is always the negative of those 2 numbers : x=-3 and x=-4. Voila!

Isn't x^2+2x-15 just (x-3)(x+5)? Also, x^2+7x+12 is just (x+3)(x+4), and the last one too, 2x-7x+3 is just (2x-1)(x-3). Different examples where you couldn't factor it normally without completing the square would've been better for this video to show people in what cases you should actually use this method.
