Thank you- now I understand the reason for subtracting the squared number outside the brackets. It is simply to 'neutralise' the effect of expanding (x + a)^2. It's only taken me 50 years to discover the reason! I'm now 65...and still learning.

Hey, thank you for this video. It really helps! However, i have a question. At 6:33, wouldn't you add 1 rather than subtracting since it is negative 1 as we are balancing both sides to gain (x+a)^2+b. Or does it work differently for this type of question? Just curious. i think there might be something wrong with question 6 on edexcel sytle because it says ‘in the form (x-a)2 + b but the answer is (x-6)2 *-* 52

Hi it is ok to be positive, it just means your answer is negative. So b = -52
