I went working for a rock act playing the Fuji Rock Festival and only got to see Tokyo and the festival site itself. We were there for 6 days and I would describe it as the closest someone from the West can visit that feels like you are on a totally different planet. A different planet that is incomprehensible but still welcoming (except for some no-gaijin bars lol) and leaves you wide-eyed like a small child. Like falling through the looking glass, everything is just slightly strange but dotted with enough familiar elements that you feel immediately comfortable and bewildered at the same time 😎 I wish I could go again and do the 21 days or more to visit the places Chris shows in this and other videos, but now I'm older and disabled, I doubt I will have that opportunity 🥲However, I am fortunate enough to have visited at least the one time and can enjoy seeing and learning more from Chris and friends on their travels. If anyone is unsure about making a trip to Japan, if you can afford the time and money, do not hesitate - go now! You will never regret or forget the experience 😍😍

Truth be told this is exactly what all the sidelined prefectures need. All the usual tourist destinations are overtouristed already, yet Kyushu, Shikoku, and Tohoku areas got cold shouldered because the bilingual infrastructures and transportations are less convenient than the level of Tokyo, which may scares away tourists that are not fluent in the language.

Accomodation I try to stick with hostels and they can go up to reallllly cheap for 30 SGD/night in Kansai Area or 60 SGD/night If you buy the JR Pass, 7 days which is 50,000 ¥ it's very worth it if you're planning a long stay and exploring a lot of region. In my case, I went Nagoya,Inuyama,Kinosaki Onsen, Okayama,Kurashiki,Hiroshima, YudaOnsen, Takamatsu. Even took the sleeper train back to Tokyo. If you plan to just stay within Kyoto I would advise getting it. Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe can all be access with their local trains. My 2nd trip in December where I stayed for 21 days, Tokyo+Osaka+Kyoto+Kobe was approximately around 3 to 4k in expenses. I ate well and went everywhere I wanted. My 3rd trip that I took in November was 2 weeks and approximately that much was spent too. Because I bought a JR pass and went to a lot of collaborations and ate expensive food LOL. I would say 3k to 4k is a comfortable amount!

I am at the part of the stork. The japanese actually watch a dutch livestream which send 24/7 video's about a pool at a rescue center for seals. Between 200 and a 1000 japanese people watch it the whole day. They love it when a bird appears, most favorite is a heron. The heron scares smaller birds away, that might harm the young seals, or even worse, steal their fish. So they call the heron "the director" "principal of the kindergarten". Meanwhile the heron is pretty much also there to steal food from the young seals. Japanese love their animals. Its very sweet and sometimes funny.

@@Woug they give the seals ussually easy names, like pear, apple, curry (this one escaped almost, but the japanese sounded alarm seeying a seal in the background walking away on the livestream). But they called the seal that was most loved by the Japanese "chabashira". While in most western cultures the 4 leaf clover means lucky, a tea leaf means luck in Japan. When seals relax in the water according to the japanese they look like a tea leaf. Chabashira means tea leaf. Chabashira was extreemly sick, but was a massive baby once they got released, to the point the japanese where making fun of the big cage to release chabashira compaired to the others.

@@thecloudyfox "because idk if im doing it right" -> If you like what you're about to do and you're being respectfull to people here, you will probably doing it right! I was 9 days in kyushu in february 2024 and spend 5 nights in fukuoka. If you allow me, i wanna add something to what chris said here about fukuoka. Canal city is best to see at night with all the lightning. Because i was here during february, night appear early so the shop where still open. If you are into gundam, they are a gundam shop here but make not the same mistake as me, it's not where the big gundam of fukuoka are. (yeah they are a big one, like the one in odaiba in tokyo ). Also they are a bunch of yatai not far away, so it's a cool spot to eat after that. I also recommand to go to beppu if possible but it's not that accesible because no shinkansen pass by the city. It's why i went here using the yufuin no mori, a special train (free with the kyushu train pass) passing by... yufuin. It's a small town in the moutain, with a lot to do, like the showa museum (chris had visited the other showa museum in another video, he said it's his favourite museum). After that, a train go directly to beppu where i spend the night. As a fan of onsen, i really want to go there again, it's really something. And if i may add something, it's that they are culinary specialties here too. Like you can cook your meal into volcano steam (they are a place for that) or taste the fruit nammed kabosu. Imagine a lemon but closest to the taste of a tangerines with a bit of a mint aftertaste. It's really good and they also make alcohol with it : )

I heard that it would take at least a month or so to even explore around Tokyo, and people are more likely to understand English so that’s why I decided to stay there half my trip. Idk if I am making a wrong decision but as a first time traveler I’m excited.

Same, i'm going to Japan for the Athletics world championship held in Tokyo, meaning that most of my stay will have to be in the Kanto area with some day/two day trips here and there. I keep telling myself that won't be the first and only time I'll go to Japan ✨

We did the trip last year! It was a lot of fun (spend 7 days in Tokyo and we were still short on time!). I think for a first time Japan trip, it's nice to follow the golden route and would not have wanted to plan it otherwise.

For anyone who is planning on visiting Nanzoin Temple in the near future to see the Reclining Buddha, I was there towards the end of November and there was scaffolding blocking the frontal view, but you can still access and rub the feet! Also, for a fee, you can even go inside the Reclining Buddha!

@@saifebrahim2590 It's good to know. I was in kyushu in february 2024 for 9 days and i didn't think i missed much by not going here but now i don't know : ) The buddha in Nara seem better on paper. (i've seen it twice), this one on Nanzoin temple seem a bit far away without a car and i dunno if they are something else to do beside seeing a big buddha.

Amazing! As they say there is only one Japan, and as I say there is only one Natsuki! Both global heritage treasures! Yes please make more videos in the future from "less well known and visited regions" of Japan! It can help us discover local gems and preserve their towns through tourism, plus spread out the over tourism of say Kyoto etc!

Last year, I went on my third trip to Japan (for 16 days), and I had decided to do West/South Japan, which overlapped a lot with your itinerary. 🙂 During my trip I went to: Kumamoto-Kagoshima-Fukuoka-Kokura-Beppu-Hiroshima-Himeji, Kobe and Osaka. If I had that third week extra, I would've added in places like Nagasaki, Kurashiki (which are present in this video) and maybe Okayama. But there already was so much I wanted to see in 2 weeks and 3 weekends. There's just so much to do in the South & West, I still wouldn't have bothered with East Japan if I had a third week. So in my opinion that feels like weirdly tacked-on at the end. If anything, my next trip in a few years will be focusing on North/East Japan for another similar time period (around 16 days). So I'd rather see a dedicated 2-week itinerary for that.

I've been living in Nagasaki for the last 3 and a half years, and in this time had at least 20 friends and family members come and visit Japan. Out of all of them, my parents are the only ones who actually made it down to Kyushu, and they only did so to come see me. I can't tell you how much people are missing out on by never traveling beyond Osaka because this side of the country has so much to offer that rarely gets covered in travel videos and sites.

One thing I would definitely want to see if I went to Japan would be the Kyoto Tachibana Senior High School Band (THE Orange Devils) perform in person, some absolutely amazing musicians. It would be even better if I could get to see Izumo Business and Kobe Koryo bands as well. Other than that, I'd just be happy taking in the culture and people, regardless of where it was in the country.

@@thecloudyfox Yeah i want to work to live, not the other way around. Also, really becoming japanese is impossible when becoming french (i'm french), german or american is possible. (or many other nationalities) So coming to japan, you will ever be seen as an outsider, no matter how many effort you put here. So it's why i choose to work in the confort of my country, and take my vacation to japan each year if possible, at least for the time being. (most french have 5 to 6 week of vacation ). They are so much to see!

This video 100% sold me on Fukuoka and Himeji for my next trip (#3!) in 2026, probably a few others too! Sapporo is an incredibly underrated city and I'm glad it got a mention here, not just for the food (which is excellent) but also for numerous unique attractions and a really strong sense of pride in the city; people in Sapporo seems to absolutely love the city and be proud of living there, and it's a really great vibe for a city to have.

Glad you showed of Fukuoka, was one of my favourite stops on my 2 month journey. Same with Yamadera (and Sendai area in general, also another favourite). I've done most of the places in your videos in that trip (given i used your videos as a base no shock there), but the one thing that's almost always new are the food recommendations and restaurants. Just food alone you can never get bored of Japan
