Thing is, AI can't replace my favorite genre of youtube video: Nerds being passionate about their special interests. The sort of video where some dude talks for 20 minutes about this one thing that they can't stop thinking about, someone out in a field pointing out the neat things they found, skits that wrap up a million in jokes from a subsection of the population into 3 minutes of perfection. AI can only remix what already exists and has no personality. The heck is the fun in that?

The thing about that is, it‘s actually just easier to replace creatives than it is to make infrastructure changes for menial labor. Either an automated jean-hole-drill press catches on something, failing mechanically, or the community can‘t afford to loose the nickles it makes from sanding holes in jeans, so its refused despite being the better, humanist, well-intended option. To clarify, those communities are wrong for insisting the work is necessary, but the point remains. A machine takes different effort, and I‘d argue more effort. So it‘s progression is slower. There are arguably more difficulties, regarding materials, getting things built, shipping them, etc. It‘s easier and cheaper to make an algorythm reading the internet, on a single laptop than it is to weld and manufacture a maid/construction-robot that doesn‘t need oversight to do everything a human arm can. Prosthetics and designs exist and are replicatable, but it takes materials. Anyways, have a good one.

The most depressing thing about the Bloo channel is how little regard people have for the intelligence of children when farming nonsensical content for them so they can make vast profits. The UK has a legacy of superb children's programming, where the content was created with great love and care, particularly people like Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate who made Bagpus, the Clangers and Ivor the Engine, or the great children's programming hosts like Neil Buchanan or Dave Benson Phillips, they all took pride and care when creating content for children and there were so many wonderful role models for a generation. Say what you will about TV but for children it's heavily regulated (at least in the UK), to make sure what they watch is appropriate. Now, children being thrown in front of KZbin instead are being given absolute brain rot, they don't learn anything, it's not healthy for them, its just obnoxious noise, giving kids what they want, rather than what they need. It's an absolute tragedy and a lost art.

I think the fear of writers being pushed out by AI comes not from the idea that writers are replaceable, but the idea that AI is infinite, and writers are limited, and capitalism will always choose infinite growth. Always. To quote James Stephanie Sterling, they don't just want money, they want all of the money forever. KZbin will become flooded with these generated videos faster than humans can put them out, and search results will be dominated by them to the point where human channels will only be reachable at all by word of mouth. That's a danger present in a lot of industries right now. The WGA is correct to nip it in the bud, and everyone else should do the same. It's not that AI doesn't have a purpose and place. But it shouldn't be even allowed comparison with what it's trying to replace.

Okay, but, I do want to point out, one of the funniest and kinda saddest things about that “20 most dangerous animals” thing is that tarantulas aren’t that dangerous? I know they put a spider first and foremost because, well, spiders, but that just sorta highlights how little they actually care…tarantulas are generally docile and low-activity, and while they do have a venomous bite, it’s no worse than a bee sting to us humans (unless you happen to be allergic). Your biggest risk is probably handling your tarantula, then forgetting to wash your hands before rubbing your eyes or something, since the fuzz can cause irritation, but as always, do your research, and don’t just pick up wild animals!

I think a good example from a while ago now was soothouse. Though it was before the whole AI mess we have going on today, they said they shut down partially because they were getting outperformed by reddit TTS channels. As someone who has consumed a lot of their content, and a decent amount of reddit TTS at times, I think it should be immediately obvious which has more value, but you can also see why TTS channels pumping out 2/3 videos a day do as well as they do.

Yep. This has already been happening. Just look at the size of channels like 5 Minute Crafts. The content varies from straight-up garbage to "this might very well kill you". Then compare the subscriber number to Ann Reardon's How to Cook That channel. She actually tries the hacks from the content farms, and has a fraction of the subscribers (although her channel is sizeable, so that's hopeful.)

The whole trick is, the grift isn't setting up the channels, it's selling people the "secret" to setting up the channels. Very few people are making money on actual content farming by the time the "gurus" come in. Folding ideas did a good video on it about audible audiobooks.

Content farms were already a blight on KZbin, and now AI is making the problem a billion times worse. I have an older version of Chromecast plugged into my TV, so I can't log into my account to see my own feed of recommended videos. What I do see there has made me feel actual rage from time to time... videos with millions of views that are clearly content farm BS. You can often tell by the video title and channel name alone. And the infuriating part is knowing that while they do bot views and engagement, there are still a bunch of dumb clueless people watching.

someone else compared these content farms to shovelware and I think that's 100% accurate. as kids, how much times did our parents bring home awful shovelware games, and how many times did we happily play them despite them being awful? not many people knew at the time, but as years went on the term gained traction and people learned to stay away, and learned the difference. I think we're going through those growing pains with AI farms, because it's so new, that if they use a good text to speech or have an actual person voice it, many people won't even catch it if they're not actively paying attention to the video. KZbin being popular is, in the grand scheme of things, still new. I really don't think as many people will consume that AI content a few years from now, just like how we as a society grew out of the horrible phase of piles and piles of Nintendo Wii and CD rom shovelware. I wonder how much of the fear is of how new it is and just how people have to learn. Those thumbnails and titles look enticing NOW, but what about in the future?

I watched an Eliot Sang vid earlier exploring the concept of attention as a commodity which we produce. Viewing consumption of media as labour throws a different shade on AI-generated content - we're working for the AI so that they can get paid by a corporation, who's earning funds by re-selling our attention to other corporations, who then try to convince us to spend money earned through other labour, on products we didn't know we wanted.

For what it’s worth, one reason short films “look like that” is aspect ratio and fps. The cinematic ratio with black bars has been studied to be perceived as more professional than aspect ratios that better fit modern tvs computers and phone screens. Additionally, pretty much all cinematic films are filmed in 24fps for pretty much the exact same reason. Some movies, for example the Hobbit movies, tried filming in 48 fps and again were perceived as cheap, even though their budget was very high. Most affordable cameras film in higher fps and a more convenient aspect ratio, and many short films we see are made for KZbin, so have these features that have been studied to be seen as distinct and cheaper than feature films. Its difficult to pinpoint so it’s more of a vibe than an obvious choice, which is why the visual style is distinct

An actual genuine issue with generated stuff is flooding sites and places that drown out actual artists and creatives. On DeviantArt, after they welcomed the stuff, its become so much harder to find other actual artists. I've blocked everything related to it, but that doesn't work because these people don't want to admit they used it! Or are too lazy to properly tag it. I dont think its gonna replace genuine artists, theres so much that a machine cannot replace... (Plus its trained on billions of stolen peices of art and writing). There's more to the creative process then just a final image.But for the lazy and greedy? Its a perfect tool for churning out meaningless stuff.

The subtlety in the way a human acts and makes content compared to a perfect cut, is something that even tho most people can't pinpoint at first, they can all tell that something is wrong when that feeling of passion isn't there, I do feel like a piece of content made by an AI is no different to a human making a piece of content that they just don't care for, the big difference at least for now between the two imo is that the AI makes content that it was told, while the human counterpart makes the content because it is something they themselves felt passionate to do and you can definitely feel that in the video

That's how I feel tbh. When a person makes content they don't care for, it's not like they're putting any sense of creativity into it, they turn their brains on autopilot and practically become AI themselves. Pinely's original reaction to kwebblecop felt like a sentiment I had when the original surge of fear came around towards artists, that if you felt like you can be replaced your content probably isn't quality or filled with passion in the first place. I’ve definitely seen so much rage against and fear towards AI on KZbin on Twitter, at least regarding art and how it’s being used to try and replace human artists or writers. Some people have been trying to use AI to replace artists, but such a modicum is pretty detrimental and dangerous since it would take away from the human touch and spirit that people can put into their artwork with their own styles or ideas. Plus, there’s the issue of AI stealing components from existing art. It’s gotten to a point where even art websites and conventions are taking a hardline stance to ban AI artwork (which I wholeheartedly support). And in regards to writing for stuff like movies or shows, having AI replace humans for writing would remove a lot of the unique human elements for scripts, etc and just turn things into churned out stories based on algorithms rather than stories people crafted themselves. I’ve also seen one or two toxic anti-SJWs claiming that AI is “good” as a means to replace “woke Hollywood writing,” but that just feels more tone-deaf and ignorant to the dangers of AI and more like pushing some bad narratives regarding “culture wars.” (I’ll also add voice acting as another major concern too. Lots of VAs, from more freelance like Gianni or in the industry for games or shows, are concerned about AI basically “stealing” their voice likenesses.)

What I hate most about ai generated content is that I see people say that it's liberating art. It's giving everyone freedom to create. But they don't create, and the art they make might only look somewhat good because the machine was fed art of actual people, who made it themselves. Nothing is stopping them from learning to draw, to write, to create. Because it's not a talent you're born with, it's a skill that takes time. And by taking hard work of amazing artists, you're not liberating art, you're actively harming the ones who make it. It's terrifying to see, in the credits of a short animated film, as the background artist be "ai + human". Not even a name. There a thousands of artists who could be working instead of that ai. Ai makes lifeless recreations of what it was fed. No thought behind it, no hard work, no nuance or humanity. And I don't want to believe that that's all art is to people.

How is that different to what you are doing though? You see what other people make, mimic it. Learn from it and combine it with your previous knowledge. You might come up with something that you didn't see before but I can guarantee you that it has been done before. Humanity as its entirety in all its history is incredibly vast. I think most people don't think at the right scope when it comes to AI. They aren't just fed pictures of one artist or remember a certain set of images that they can mimic. They are being fed massive amounts of data. So much that thousands of people couldn't look at all of it before their life is finished and through deeplearning adjust a massive practically non deconstructible neural network that can create an output that nobody can understand anymore where it came from. It does not function like a copycat program like most people believe. If you see an AI image and think: "I have seen something just like this before it must have copied it from someone else." That is complete nonsense. That is not how deep learning AI operates. The only reason it seems like that is because an unholy amount of art has been created in the history of humans and the likelyhood of you having seen something very similar before is incredibly high. You can feel the exact same way about any human created artwork given the right bias. This is simply due to the fact that pretty much everything that humans find appealing has already been discovered by the billions and billions of human lifetimes that have passed so far. AI will have the ability to have access to a lot of it, so there is no reason why AI wouldn't be able to create something indiscernable from human art in the future. I simply believe we have to regulate it. Noone stopped watching sports just because there are robots out there that can run faster or be stronger than humans. The fact that something is being done by humans has value to humans.

The apparent hard limit AI is running into is that it needs good original data to be trained on. The addage "garbage in garbage out" holds very true. AI models trained on the output of other AI models turns into conplete unintelligible gibberish in just 3 generations. We can already see this with clever trolling like the fake posts on reddit leading to an article referencesing a made up thing and making a fool of the publisher. I'm not saying that AI isn't a potential threat to original works and creative expression. But AI maximalists are exaggerating it's potential in the foreseeable future.

Being an artist, I used to love watching two minute papers but then AI quickly took off and I learned that it is trained with bilions of pictures, with no credit given and no copyright/licenses respected. Then my favorite art plattform, Artstation got flooded with flooded with this slob and when everyone called them out on it, Tim Sweeney (owner of epic games and Artstation) just talked down to artists and tried to looks like one of those AI clowns are one of us. Now we have images with thousands of of likes on the frontpages and those people have never drawn in their lives, dont respect artists, try to pretend to be artists and live of off artists content. Thank you for mentioning the editor in the "automation" process. I'm sure if people can get their way the editor will be thrown out the window as well, but as a video editor I still feel safe to a degree from robots taking my job. Under your last video I mentioned making my own unhinged video essay so I'll mention it in here again. On top of the conception of a topic so niche no robot can hallucinate the depth of, the editing and the underlying human understanding behind the veil of context is the most important part of the visuals - the visual flow that brings one frame to the next, the memes that makes the narration relatable, and the composition that gives a deeper meaning to the words being spoken, they are all important not only in online videos, but film in general. There is an emotional layer in the editing process that makes a video truly unique, even when everything else lacks it. Not that I'm advocating for this type of automation; some videos I've edited makes me wanna puke from how boring they are, but when the editor is emotionally invested in the subject, it will come across the screen and impact the viewer as well.
