Hi everyone, here are a few tips on how to spray Benjamin Moore‘s new Command. This paint dries very fast and has a hard finish. My first impressions are that I like it, and there’s a good chance that it will become my go to paint for furniture projects from now on. I’m delivering this frame with the painting in it later today… If you want to see how it looks in the clients home follow me on Instagram.

Have you used some of the commercial coating I.E. Renner/Milesi/CIC Centurion? I have used Renner and love it. However, I can’t buy it in the NY area and have to have it shipped to me which means extra days and forget it if I short myself by a quart on a job. I tried Advance and liked the results but it’s a homeowner product because of the insanely long dry times. I just tried PPG Breakthrough yesterday and see serious potential but now I may have to try this also.

Yesssssssss! I love it. I took the plunge before anything was out on the internet about it… and I’m glad I did. I was able to spray with a 4 stage turbine and 1.5mm tip. No thinning. Tried thinning it too and works just as well… don’t thin more than 10%. Brushes ok, coverage isn’t great. Rolling is ok too, can’t find a roller that doesn’t leave bubbles or stipple.

Thanks for introducing us to Command. My BM/Scuff-X dealer has implored me to try it. I have the same Fuji Q5. When I saw how your spray first came out, I figured it would orange peel (been there myself). Acrylics/urethanes are really tough w/ HVLP, even 5 stage. Ended up buying a Tritech T5 airelss for this stuff. Pro tip from my dealer: if you are going to spray w the Fuji (he sells both), *warm the paint first*. Has the benefits of thinning, without the negatives.

@@mithrilcraft I use a hair dryer, some guys use a microwave. Either way, buy a dedicated unit. Costco/Wal-Mart cheapo special is fine. You don't want paint on your good hair dryer or microwave. Pro tip: TCP Global paint mixing cups are awesome. Amazon has them. 64/32/16oz. Not only for heating paint, but for storing it. Paint lasts really long with no air in the can. Once you use 1/4 can, transfer it to a 64 and a 32 TCP mixing cup. Be sure to get lids (I think the pack of 50 cups comes with only 5-10 lids). Most paint can be heated to over 100F safely. There is a formula out there for how many degrees of temp increase = x % thinning. Either way, heating the paint gives you the benefits of the thinning without the drawbacks.

I have moved from Fuji spray to a purpose built gentilin compressor for painting. Its quieter, no thinning of paint, or very little, like a few drops of water, easier to clean out and i have been very impressed out of the box. Its a little bulkier- its a 25litre continuous flow, but for the quietness, control and no need to thin, i am really happy.

For a paint like this would definitely recommend using an airless with a 308 fflp tip. I’ve been finishing for a while now I end up only using my hvlp for lacquer primer. Also helps if you use a 1.5 air cap with 1.3 tip helps keep that high fluid pressure and higher air output to get finer atomization of the coatings. I noticed when changing tip sizes and air cap sizes with the Fuji I still was getting less than optimal atomization. Found keeping the small tip and just changing the aircap really helped a lot

Tip from an old time car repairman. When flatting down with 320 on what isn’t a normally fully cured surface use a bit of water and soap. The soap stops the paper from clogging and creates a really smooth finish and doesn’t generate dust of course. If you are really pushing to flatten paint which isn’t properly dry rub the paper on a bar of soap. We would have 320 in one hand and a bar of soap in the other as invariably the paint wasn’t fully dry.

Finally sprayed Command with my Q5. Got pretty much the same results as you did. Very slight orange peel despite thinning 20% and 1.5 tip. I may try to thin a bit more. But it's probably going to require three coats in white at that point. Love the paint. I need to try it in the Tritech airless, but cleanup/waste is such an issue with that.

Great video. I just sprayed some shelves with Command and was able to get fantastic results!!! It looks as good as the BM Advanced I had sprayed out by a pro cabinet maker a few years ago. (And the dry time was amazing!!!) 1. I used my new Fuji Semi-Pro 2 gravity feed. I thinned Command a little more than Jon did here and used a 1.5 tip. I started with the needle all the way in and adjusted it until I got a light, spray can type mist. Probably just a turn or two. 2. I laid my pieces on a lazy susan and used the ball pattern on the edges. I switched to the fan pattern for the rest and moved slowly as to put down a thin but very wet coat. I worked a little closer and square to the surface. (I heard that you want a hand-sized fan when you are a hand-length away from the workpiece.) 3. One coat over primer looked amazing with a little bit of wood grain showing through. The second coat filled the wood grain. I also did some UV-coated plywood with a bonding primer on it and it looked like a factory cabinet finish with just one wet coat. 4. If you use the Fuji 6' whip hose. It has a bad wrap for falling apart so don't drag the main hose around with it. Grab the main hose to drag it into place and use the whip from there. The hose is a tool to make painting easier. Treat it nice, be gentle. EDIT: I'm a novice, but there are so many good HVLP videos out there that it's pretty easy to learn.

thank you for the video. Those are Fuji spray guns correct? I have a Fuji gravity feed gun with a Q5 turbine. I dont have the dial like you have to adjust the air and my system is a tad older. The air regulator is at the hose. I have been trying to spray post catalyst paint for cabinets and I'm using a 1.3 tip but have thinned it just a little. I see that your using the 1.8 tip. Do you find that tip optimal when spraying paint? I'm trying to get my finish to atomize correctly and maybe I have been using the wrong size tip and much to small for the product I'm spraying? I usually spray a conversion varnish such as Cambell's Stealth or Turino. Im trying Magnavar today. Any advice is greatly appreciated on needle size. Also what model of Fuji guns are you using?

I did the backs of my cabinet doors yesterday. They turned out pretty good. Today I did the fronts but I'm pretty sure I added too much water. They look like alligators. I will sand them tomorrow and spray again without thinning at all. 1.4 tip. If it needs thinning I'll know right away, and adjust. I was planning 4 coats, and this was only the first, so hopefully we can recover.

@@MixingGBP LOL I was totally kidding. I can get a great brushed finish using BM Advance if I'm quick and smooth on the stroke and don't double-back. But a roller... not even close to either a brush or especially a spray gun. Not even in the same universe. I've been spraying for 25 years (here and there) and used to paint show cars and I can tell you that it takes a lot of practice. Too dry and you get the rough feel and small bumps. Too wet and you get sags and runs. You have to get a feel for it. This guy was putting it on way too thin. You shouldn't hear any sandpaper-like noise when running your hand over the surface or it means you sprayed it too dry. This paint is amazing for its dry-time and durability, but it has almost no flow which is both a blessing and a curse. I tried brushing it on some trim and forget it. It's great for baseboards where nobody will notice, but if you require a factory-like finish such as for cabinets, you can forget brushing or rolling. You'll have to spray it and spray it right.
