I have always liked the look of single stage black. I had a 79 Trans Am back in the late 80s painted with black Imron and it looked killer and stayed looking good for years.

I worked for a few high end shops 90 percent of our black cars all get painted with Single stage then get wet sanded, buffed, some time we would wet sand and hit it agin with 3 coats of Clear coat then re wet sand and buff

And they're very durable. Excellent for daily drivers, pickups, equipment, semi-gloss or flat jobs. I'd say about 2/3 of all paint jobs could be done much cheaper in single stage, but hardly any body shop wants to do it because they're used to and set up for cc/bs.

Your videos are really helpful and informative! As a diy guy for all my stuff it’s nice to have a supportive channel like this breaking the process down in manageable units of information. I like that you explain the process in each video and don’t take for granted that people have a base level of knowledge. Even though I’ve seen bunches of your videos I’m still at such a low level that the explanation in each new video is a great reinforcement to what I sort of remember from the past but don’t truly have a good grasp on. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge

This brings me back. With a chevy 350 pushin a rear wheel drive unibody these things were among the most dangerous machines on the road but damn they were fun to drive. Rolled mine into a tree and snapped the rear axle. Climbed out the passenger side window, gave her a kick and she flopped back over right side up. She was smoked but I turned the key for shits and grins and she fired right up. She was one tough old bird.

I have been watching while I prep my car at night after work! My wife hates this car because it’s taking time from her. But I am a guy! Anyway I got this 2007 Mercury Milan for $400. I am a mechanic and it did not run. I got it running for less than $100 so I figured that I could splurge a little. The paint was not in bad shape. But the body, hay Zeus. Bad bad. So we have a paint both at work and I thought what the hell. That how I found this channel. I have done lots of body work but never painted before. So I think this will be my first attempt. This looks like the single stage paint job I want to try. Thanks for the video. This is an inspiring channel. Representing Gainesville, Florida.

Honestly, this is great. I would hand sand it with wet 2000, then polish it out, by hand. Two stage is fine, but it's a lot of extra work and money, and i think it often looks like plastic wrap crap. This is beautiful work. I really like single stage paint.

After the single stage cures, you can always sand it smooth and put a coat of clear on it. I've heard if you start with single stage black. Sand it smooth. Then do a coat with 25% clear mixed with the single stage. Sand, then 50-50 single stage and clear. Sand. Then 75% clear with the black. Sand. Then full clear. I heard this is how to get a custom black paint job that looks like you can put your hand through the paint. I've never seen it. But I've wanted to try it since I heard about it. Expensive and time consuming. But probably worth it on the right car
@alleybuilds5370
@alleybuilds5370 Жыл бұрын
yeah this is an old school method, a lot of the older painter will do two coats of single stage. Then for a third coat do a 50/50 mix single stage and clear.

INSTEAD OF THE EXTRA EFFORT AND MONEY IN MATERIALS, YOU LAY DOWN 3 - COATS OF SINGLE STAGE , OBSERVING THE DRYING TIMES IN BETWEEN COATS , IF YOU USE MEDIUM REDUCER THE PAINT SHOULD FLATTEN OUT MINIMIZING ORANGE 🍊 PEEL , IF YOU HAVE TO BUFF USE 3000 GRIT WITH 3M PERFECT IT COMPOUND USING A FOAM PAD, A WAFFLE PAD FOR THE FINAL POLISH !!!!!

that turned out nice,I have never painted base clear as I was trained to paint with the old fashioned enamal.I worked at the time at a GM dealership in the early 80's ,we used acrylic laqour and enamal.Both paints loved to run if you wasn't carefull.But sadly because of the fumes etc I had to give it up,,last time i held a gun was about 12 years ago but it's like riding a bike you never foget.

thanks for all of these videos, had a bumper to respray and aerosol cans where just not working. decided to make the jump and get a spray gun. car is 019 black with clear coat. but decided to go with u-pol 2k direct gloss black and their associated primer. came out better that i could have imagined, couple of runs, but ok considering all the converging contours on the bumper. very little orange peel and car looks great. m from the uk.

moskvich actually had single stage from factory. while it was better at rust protection, it was worse at looking pretty. for some reason, that metallic happened to shrink with sun shining on it (so i quess heat shrank it) and the whole paint is like spiderweb. and i haven't seen a metallic that says it doesn't need clear. all the metallics i've seen says it needs clear coat.

Black is one of the colors I much prefer a single stage. Lacquer, acrylic, enamel doesn’t matter…if it’s color sanded and buffed, it just looks better than a basecoat/clearcoat with that plasticky shine.

I have always found painting single stage way easier to paint without peel, I learned on it with a binks bbr. I find such a difference in base coats even different colours of the same brand can give you grief, now plain black is probably the easiest colour to me to get a hi gloss no orange peel paint job with any gun.

If you have put enough coats on, just buff it. Single stage buffs easy as long as there's no metallics. If you want to add another coat, sand and reduce, but I prefer to stack SS from the beginning.
