I'm looking forward to watching this series. Your tutorial videos helped me get started. I've been playing on Rime for a couple weeks, and the main lesson I've learned is that the debris from digging will be your main obstacle to expansion. Literal tons of subzero mass sitting on the floor will thwart all your heating efforts in any new area. Adhering to the common strategy of centralized storage to reduce tidy and supply commutes will just freeze the heart of your colony. Any time I plan a new area I dig from the top down, digging a few extra tiles out at the bottom so all the debris lands below my insulated barrier. I put my storage outside the barrier as well, with dedicated tidier and supplier dupes so materials still get moved in a timely manner. I run my cooling loop through the storage room, both because it is a great heat sink, but also so I slowly warm all that material for use, prioritizing dirt, sandstone, and ores at the warm end of the loop since those are the primary materials dupes are bringing back into the colony for farming and construction.

Never really thought about all the cold debris. I will move my storage out of the warm base.

I know I'm necroposting here, as the video is very old, but my own strategy for dealing with early game code on Rime was to avoid spreading out too much, early. That helps keep the cold at bay in several ways, but one important one for crops is that you're not fertilizing mealwood with ice cold dirt! If I need to heat early, I use the kiln rather than the space heater. It requires no power and generates more heat. Of course, the goal is to get into position to be able to use a tepidizer and fluid circuit to keep things warm.

@@KaladinVegapunk Typically I have a base in the oil biome to groom a giant slickster colony. I need a lot of slicksters to provide some fuel for my petrol generators and to eat the massive amount of CO2 produce by my ethanol industry. 16 ranches filled with 7-8 slicksters each and a few hundred in an overflow tank where they can't move, but aren't confined and I remove eggs so they don't get cramped. To get the most out of each rancher dupe I have down there in the long term, I need a large amount of incubators, as lullabying eggs is the only way a dupe increases their ranching attribute. It is important to set up a system where the incubator powers off shortly after a dupe provides the lullaby buff, and then turns back on when the dupe is able to re-apply the buff. This way you don't need as much energy production to power several incubators. Some people like using clocks in the automation. I personally like using the weight plate with buffers and filters.

@Animuldok5 жыл бұрын
you can also start with one ladder down to leave the initial temperate stone intact so you can grow crops near the printer until you're able to warm the area properly. the temperature should be fairly static for many cycles. This works well (for the opposite reason) on a Aridio or Oassise.

Couple of things about the coal generator. The % value on the generator itself refers to how full it is when it should be refilled, so if you always want it full set the value to 100, 50 means “refill me when im 50% full”. Also the generator works on a cycle that cant be interrupted and if the battery hits 100% the generator could still be in a power producing cycle meaning you waste some coal. Set the smart battery to a lower max % like 90 to ensure you dont waste fuel.
@GrindThisGame5 жыл бұрын
Ok I will try 90%
@olshanski5 жыл бұрын
I think this is wrong. When a smart battery sends a red signal to a coal generator, it immediately shuts off regardless of how much coal it has. it is correct that you set the "refill number" on the coal generator.

That is a interesting concept of using batteries for heat. I am currently playing the same map, and will probably go ahead and create a insulated room with 10 batteries in it and then circulate air/water around the farms for heating. I know its only a temporary measure, as once the base gets established, heat becomes a issue again, but being surrounded by cold air, makes it pretty easy to manage.

I could be wrong, but I think it's told from the perspective of the dupe printing portal. When you reach space the alert says "My dupes have broken the surface..." and it's always told in this singular first person. You must be some sort of overseeing central computer, which either means you don't have a corresponding in-game object, or you're housed in the dupe printer since it's the only thing that's always there.

I usually start with a Researcher with either Supplier / Suitwearer as secondary interest because it allows for a easier morale curve for pilot(Even if Morale's rarely a issue near the end) or I choose to get the mechanic off interest(Depends on start biome). Then a Digger/Builder with secondary interest in either of those two or Supplier, this allows for a rather strong builder with maxed out digging for the dig + build jobs later on... Being out of the base a long time also gives limited decor morale bonuses so I like the digger to have multi interests getting rank 3 dig, build and suits are quite expensive especially if rushed. The final slot I acctually get a cook with decorating, since you only ever need one of both of those specializations. Researching and Decorating are jobs with limited applications once you are done with early game neither of these jobs will be used for a long time. So I rather give those dupes something to do on the side, my cooks are always high prio cooking and the only one allowed to decorate. My researcher(s) I usually turn into engineers or pilots. I have basicly stopped using the priority tool, I mostly just set "life support" and "toggling" as Very high priority on all my dupes, then just choose by specialization what they should do. I usually name my dupes like "Architect" then just high Priority - build, Normal priority Dig, then the rest I lower to "low priority". Then they will pretty much always do what I want, which Is toggling switches, deal with bathrooms and then the jobs I want them too do like build or dig etc. If you for example set the priority on farmplots too 6-7 suddenly alot of dupes who do it slower then my farmers will "compete" with that Job sending my afrmer somewhere else. A researcher will pretty much always research unless a toilet needs to be emptied etc. Once they don't have anything important to do I just let them do whatever with proximity on since that will make them work more then just run around. Only time I use priority tool are when It's a real emergency and the great thing about having basicly everything priority five(Except storage bins) at five are that a ton of dupes will run over to do the jobs. Going to be interesting too see how you handle the map once some insulations been breached and the cold start to seep into your starting biome. Just don't do my misstake and breach the core for a stupid neuralizer. It got cold very quickly and I had to rebuild most of my base that already ahd very limited resources and manpower.
@GrindThisGame5 жыл бұрын
Some good ideas in there. I guess I like to blast through the research but then yeah that dupe goes to waste a bit. They all level up which is nice though.
@magnuscarlsson99695 жыл бұрын
@@GrindThisGame Well my dupes usually reach a high statistic in their "duties" early on. Being able to do more of their role quicker makes sure they get even more experience each cycle. When I look at my current cook for example, he have 14 + 4(Skills) in cuisine on cycle 72 however his other stats are fairly low but the quicker he get on doing cooking the more time he have left over to do other things, in his case decorating which is a thing you can take your time with to finnish up. Starting with 7 in skill are really nice but from past experience I rather spread It out with a +3/+3 as long as the jobs align with one another. Any job + Supplier for example makes sure they can carry more, A normal builder can't for example bring all the materials needed to build most things except tiles and ladders early on and if materials are from the edge they will run back and forth twice o supply the build It's for example really bothering when doing early insulation tiles since Igneous Rocks usually at the edge of the starting biome unless picked up and stored away closer to the building area. My "builders" usually get Hard digging and then a point in supplier that way they can acctually bring all they need to a build at once. Digging is also a job which you don't really benefit alot from early since all the materials are soft in the starting biome making +7 digging skill almost useless compared to either be able to carry more or build faster, not to mention the morale reductions are worth it on dupes who venture outside of the base alot. The difference between my researcher and my builders are 12 morale since they often end up in low decor areas or might miss to eat properly(Usually the same deal with plumbers and Engineers). Starting with a +3 researcher and +3 machine skill dupe are also quite big, since a hybrid can run on the wheel and reach max output 15% faster, so It equals out anyway... a +7 dupe requires outside help to not lose speed. While at the same time setting the researcher up for something to do besides researching. I usually just put down a instant light above the research station(Yes I research basic decorations first, then jumbo battery after that I do farms). Even if a dupe start at 7, they cap out on 20+skills+positive traits. So splitting the interests equals more well rounded dupes in the end. Teaching farmers mechanics for example, make them make fertilizer quicker at the farm stations etc.

@DatNguyen982115 жыл бұрын
@@justgame5508 actually not, when cooked 1 hatch can feed 4 dupes and the number of eggs it give per ranch is crazy amount, if you worry it take too long to hatch then incubators is all you need, 2 ranch is enough for 5-7 dupes

I think it would be better if you were to space the batteries out a little and put farming tiles between them, the air above the batteries were about 15c at 21:00. would work for meal wood at least. never played the game myself though so idk if it would work, just guessing

Good plan. I'm leaning more towards space heaters in insulated rooms now since they put out so much more heat.

Rime is both super easy and annoyingly hard. Heat is such a nonissue, i have 60C hot water flowing all over the place in my base (for oxygen) and my hottest part of my base is still in the 35 range. However, there were next to no critters for me. Some hatches, but thats about it. So i was at the mercy of the care packages to get dreckos. And peppermint took some ingenuity to get to work, since i usually just pump whatever polluted water i could funnel into a big pool and bam i got tons of peppermint. Water that wasnt from my super hot salt geyser kept freezing in pipes lol which was really annoying but not really hard to deal with. Also couldnt really filter anything, since all the polluted water was below 0C.
@GrindThisGame5 жыл бұрын
It should be fun! Were your pipes insulated?
@vineheart015 жыл бұрын
@@GrindThisGame Yeah, but that only helps short-term. Getting water from a pool wasnt the issue, its getting it out of a geyser. Eventually whatever youre feeding it to backs up so the water just sits there :P

This is my map currently, I did frozen core and large glaciers. It's been hard yet fun. Im curious to see how you do your food, I went 100% hatches

Flatulent dupes are free natural gas! Just setup low power filter at the bottom of the base to gather it and you can run some low power equipment on it!

You need the world generator mod, it lets you fine tune the settings. If you find an acorn then it might be the wood burners time to shine. And of course rust for oxygen production. Finally sore back give -1 to athletics so cots are worth it early on.
@S_Black5 жыл бұрын
You can get cots early on, but you don't need them on the first day. Much more important to get the bathroom up

S Black my first cycle priorities are always, water, 2 toilets, 2 sinks then beds. The problem is that new players may see this video and take gtgs comment the wrong way.

Grind This Game at 8:05 you said that you dont need beds right away because their stress doesnt go up until you start giving them skills, while this is true i just wanted to point out that the sore back debuff still occurs without a bed.

I find rime maps kind of boring; making your base hotter is generally a lot easier than keeping it cool, and the low temperatures means you don't even need to worry about germs. Also, you'd think it would favour a different approach to food (i.e., go for the gas cooker ASAP and focus on sleet wheat), but frozen biomes in rime are missing the wheat (so much for natural selection, eh?), so it ends up being the same as in other asteroids, just a bit slower because you need to warm up your greenhouses. Meh.
@MdArtzTGr5 жыл бұрын
I'm playing my world on Rime currently and I was able to find a few sleet wheet plants. It probably just depends on the seed :/
@RFC35145 жыл бұрын
I've tried three rime maps, none of them had any wheat plants (though you can still get them in care packages, I assume), despite having multiple ice biomes. That was a couple of patches ago, though, so maybe it was some strange bug that got fixed this month (although there's no mention in the changelogs).
