Hi Paul & Sheryl. We have that white mesh netting underneath our mattress in the main cabin and guest cabin. It's excellent and helps breathability and therefore stops mould. We also have a latex topper on our mattress which we love because it breaths so well and we don't get hot. Cheers Bryan & Denise (willow II)

Diana, your input was priceless. Vyva Fabrics InStyling In & Out is the candy shop for fabric choices. I love the chosen fabrics and colors. I'm so glad you didn't opt for the blue/green. Although, I loved the first blues the best, which coordinated with your countertops, I think your final decision will enhance the mahogany. 👏 Neptune Nautical Comforts IMO certification is something that would be of paramount importance to me. An IMO/MED certification is proof that, if a fire incident occurs on a vessel, these materials possess sufficient fire-retardant capabilities to stop or otherwise slow down the spread of a fire. These tests also ensure these materials don’t release toxic or environmentally harmful gases when burning or exposed to high heat. Thank you for sharing these excellent sources. You chose wisely. Bravo!

The title made me lol. Funny. We met briefly at the Annapolis boat show. I was one in a long line to have my minute or two. Knowing I only had a brief encounter, I crafted my words efficiently so not to be one of those that thought themselves important. I breezed thru my statement of my sailing experience due to YT-ers like you with praises of your channel. Paul looked over my shoulder during my speech completely uninterested as I sped thru my prepared statement. That stuck with me. That was interesting to learn about the fabric and materials. Was cool to see about the cushions and beds. It is important to get it right! How do you control moisture/ventilation in your boat? Esp underneath matresses it is important.

We went with a slat system that keeps the mattress slightly raised so air flows underneath it. On previous boats before we had this system we would just prop the mattress up on something every morning to let the mattress air out underneath until we finished breakfast and started the day. For general air flow we always have lots of opening hatches and fans on the boat.

Enjoyed watching this. I am so happy for you two. Having done our cushions, I relented to the foam manufacture that "this is what all the boats use" instead of going with my gut. Now, 5 years later (but only 5-6 months/year of use) we bottom out on the aft berth and our salon seats are not holding up. (getting a topper for the berth) When I cut the cushions, google said to add 1/2" to each foam side as the material will look tighter. I also used the batting over the foam.

So jealous,. We have a new travel trailer. We upgraded the mattress during the initial purchase. Time has shown the cushions in the dinette are not to my liking. One of the disadvantages of living in a small town it not having such a robust showroom and suppliers. Looking forward to seeing the sail boat in the water and your adventures.

memory foam cushions and mattresses are the best . but, it is most important to include an adequate top layer of breathable ( natural ) material before covering with leather or fabric…i e , a thick quilted cotton layer allows air to flow… love the new yacht design!

It might sound silly for some but boat upholstery is a complex and important decision. In the end, beauty, durability, practicality, comfort and adequate heat management in all conditions are expected. In this aspect, and considering your wife's sailing experience, I consider the lady has dibs. 🙂

Make sure to view these fabrics in the lighting you have inside the boat. The color spectrum of interior lights determines how they will actually look. What's also important to realize is that the mahogany in the interior will influence the colors (simply by reflection of interior and exterior light against it); so it's best to also take these fabrics inside the boat once all the lights are ready. I wouldn't use to dark & unsaturated colors as they can become dark/colorless see for example (where the blue becomes dark grey: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqfXYYCPZrSqg7ssi=okv6l4XgU9iedrhk&t=475

3 to 4" (75 - 100 mm) of memory foam on a mattress. That's all I need. (I'm average weight, average height.) For a couch/settee I want some friction against butt sliding in cotton, or nylon (hot weather). My boat has leather seats that just slide. They are only comfortable/practical if my feet are on the floor and I'm leaning forward. Otherwise it's a slow slide. I've have use on top a grippy silicone seat pad - and this is just to be able to keyboard on my galley table. For the Sunbrella shedding water. What's doing the shedding? Is it a Teflon/Scotchgard forever chemical? I'd rather not have that. (I use Sunbrella outside, but it seems there are only 8 colors 5 of them no one would want. Of course I'm a guy... so I'm sure I'm missing a lot.) And someone please explain throw pillows. How the second couple that owned my boat decided that the 7 or 8 throw pillows the first couple brought on board weren't enough so they added another 8? (Most of them are now in my garage.) In my entire life I've never seen more than two throw pillows being used at the same time. I really like the hypervent attached to the mattress. The queen sized mattress in my main cabin sits on top a layer of this. The mattress is also enclosed in a loose protective covering. It's nearly impossible to move the mattress around, it slips and slides you can't grip it. I bought some of those really big 'safety pins', had to sharpened the points. I used them to pin webbing loops underneath the sides of the mattress, now I can move it. And maybe I'm not right, but I always want my upholstered surfaces to be waterproof. I've slept on breathable fabrics that had been on a couch for only a few years. Smelled awful.

Great comments and information! We agree with you about having just a few throw cushions. Otherwise, you’ve got extra stuff to stow when you’re sailing. We never had the sliding issue with our leather upholstery. Maybe there are different finishes?

@@DistantShoresTV Might be seat cushion design. Now that I'm thinking about it, my comfy cushions are probably too soft so they don't keep by bum where I park it. The acid test maybe can I sit sideways with my feet at the level of my bum. Are your feet on the floor what's keeping your from sliding? I think that's the crux of my situation. When I was a teacher the school district was buying hundreds of thousands of plastic chairs on spindly legs that would snap. (A father who was a welder looked at them. Said the welds were just tack welds, not proper welds.) The chairs were complete garbage, everyone hated them because you couldn't sit in them without your butt sliding. (Of course they could throw out fast enough the 50 year old wooden chairs that everyone loved.) Another chair that was a bit more like the old ones cut into your thighs, cutting circulation. It's so strange when all the best chair designs: The wooden kitchen chair, Alvar Alto, Eames, etc can be freely copied, instead they come up with junk. For cushioned seats....? there has to be a few really great designs. I just don't know what they are.

Unless you are strapped for cash Latex is a no brainer. Our antique lounge was latex. When re-upholstered we went with the "best" stuff which wasn't latex. Our 1929 lounge suite turned from the most comfortable one we ever had to just ordinary.

I'm not sure a dark colour scheme is going to be a good idea when going to a northern location which will be rather dark outside (more cloudy and the sun will be lower) with small windows on your boat and a dark interior.

With the bamboo faux brick pattern wallpaper, the coconut tree motif. They even picked up some second hand leather furniture over there in Annapolis to rip off the fabric for some cushions. Then just brown and grey and green everywhere. Like they just went over the Home Depot and picked out some paint colors and painted the walls themselves. So yea. Their plumbing is even just exposed copper pipe. Ya know like from the harbor there in New York City. Oh well. Get creative. Get it done. Get it in the water. Come on now. I know you can. I don't know here guys. Yea. Maybe Home Depot is for you. Well, I also go to Lowes. Sometimes. Just don't know. Here. Just don't know. We've interviewed Leo a few times over the years for the Distant Shores TV series, before he even started his latest boat project. The designs he has for his interior is traditional and beautiful. Love his stained glass but it wouldn't work on our boat.
