Keep your grades up and go to college or find a trade your good at and you will be the winner in the long run. All the bully has is his k-12 years and his life is crap after that. Keeping that high school mentality and living in the glory years the rest of their miserable life. Probably only get jobs making 20-30k a year and divorced while your living the good life with a family and good job. You’ll have the last laugh if you keep this in mind.

I taught a similar concept to my son when he was 4 years old, and the the neighbor kids were 5 & 6 and all brats. They invited him to play basketball with them, then only played keep away. He came in so sad and hurt. That night I talked to him about taking responsibility in any situation -- meaning, taking ownership of your own actions. That "responsibility" gives you "response-ability". You're not powerless. We talked about what they were seeking (to make him upset) and if he blew it off and didn't get upset, then they wouldn't get their pay off. I suggested that when the first started keeping the ball from him, he casually say "Look, are we gonna play ball? I'm here to play ball". He asked "what if they still do it?". I replied with "I thought we were going to play ball. Are we going to play or not? Because if not, I have other things to do". He asked but what if they STILL do it. My reply: "I've got other things to do. I'll catch ya guys later", and calmly walk back in the house. Call them on their BS. Stay calm. Don't stick around for the abuse. He's now 17 and so calm, strong & self-confident, and a great help to his friends when they are needing advice of any kind.

In Singapore, bullies were forced to sent out of the school if teacher's see them bully other people. Then when the bullies got sent out of the school, the principal sends their parents an email saying that your child can't come to this school anymore because he/she bullies other people. This is why not even a single student in Singapore would bully other people because they're scared of getting sent out of the school and get grounded by their parents because of bullying other students at school.

There is the ONE Problem dealing with Bullies that Video's like this don't show. In the 90's in secondary school I was bullied by this one boy and his friends. One day, he backed me to a wall... And the insults started. Everyone laughed WITH him; he'd gathered a crowd watching him destroy me, calling me names... To which I responded: "It so good you're expanding your Vocabulary and working on your People skills". Everyone laughed AT HIM and not with him. With that one line it was like I'd ripped his Soul out of his Body. And so he resorted to violence. I gotta give him this, that was one quick punch. That I sidestepped. And he hit the very wall he'd backed me into breaking some bones in his hand. Making everyone Laugh at him even more. It's be nice if that was where it ended. Bullies are Pack hunters... Unfortunately, one night he and his friends caught me outside of School. I had been studying Martial Arts for many years and held my own for the first 10 seconds... But with overwhelming Numbers they beat me so badly I was in Hospital for TWO Months. This predated Camera Phones and CCTV everywhere. And they said I had started on them. If it wasn't for HIS girlfriend backing me up on what happened I cannot imagine how the rest of it would have gone.

My son was about 14 or 15 when he was bullied in a situation, then he was away from that situation for about 6 months. When he came back to that group for one evening, BOOM, it started again, only worse than before, and I'm not even sure it was the same person. What he said afterward was very significant. He said, "I could ACT like it didn't bother me, because it DIDN'T bother me, because I'd been a way from it and I knew that I was more than what they thought of me." This is significant. Kids can't just act like it doesn't bother them if they don't know that they are something different than what the other kids are saying about them. (And by the way, he went back to that group twice and simply found that there was nothing there for him, either from the teacher or the kids.)
@toddr.hepworth80987 жыл бұрын
Another teacher here. I'll add to Sergio Clemente's excellent response to this video. Brooks Gibbs only presents one very limited way of understanding bullying. He summarizes a sociological perspective about dominance. Behavioral scientists have also studied bullying for decades. Their conclusions are this: A person receives a psychological reward when they engage in bullying behavior. They will only stop that behavior when the negative consequences outweigh the positive rewards. Dominance is not the only reward. As Sergio said, social approval is a much more powerful motivator. When one person grows "thick skin," the bully merely moves on to the next victim to torment for the approval of an audience. Don't give them the audience. Having taught children from Kindergarten through fifth grade in public schools, here's what I found works for most (not all--no approach is universal) bullies. Zero tolerance on a social level. Stand with the victim. Publicly shame the bullies. Shun them. Humiliate them. Ostracize them. Make the social consequences so unbearable that the bullying behavior becomes too painful to continue. Then, and only then, do you attempt to invite the bully back into the social group and help change behavior with "nice words." Bullies won't stop until it hurts too much to continue.

Todd R. Hepworth bullys can help in life if stand up to them like me I learned you gotta be confident don't let people run all over you
@toddr.hepworth80987 жыл бұрын
Eventually, that's what everyone needs to learn--to be confident and stand up for themselves. However, there are a lot of people who haven't learned how to do that, yet. They don't deserve to be victimized by bullies just because they can't just "shake it off," yet. In fact, those are the people bullies seek out--those whom they consider easy targets. So we stand up for them and with them. Zero tolerance for those who prey on others.
@Sither046 жыл бұрын
And what happens when they push back more? Will we push back harder? Then will they push back more? When do they reach their breaking point and become unstable and damaged? The reality here is that bullying comes from internal pain, and if you encourage that pain to grow, you’ll end up with ugly results. Also just wanted to say you seem more modest and realistic than the other teacher, so props for that.

If everyone or at least majority of the people use this method instead of being told to yell "STOP!!" and to tell a grown-up, very few people would get bullied. Why not teach more kids this? This has helped a lot of people with their bullying situations (evidence present in the comments section). I have used this tactic for years and not one bully had relentlessly targeted me. I have a lot of bully material too.
@enzedmed97003 жыл бұрын
This has always been my method for dealing with bullies and I don't recall being bullied except maybe once when I was 9 for my hair from some older kid. I don't agree with letting bullies run a muck, but if you can let go of that stupid need to be perfect, is releases a massive weight off your shoulders. It will give you so much free energy to play with. You just have to get comfortable calling yourself silly, stupid, goofy, clumsy, make it cute if you want, just dont take yourself too seriously. Let others take the pressure of being perfect, watch them burn out, set yourself up to be underestimated, know in yourself you can jump in whenever you feel like it, but you choose not too because its just a waste of energy. Save your strength for the real fights in life. Like stopping a bully for bullying someone else.

"When someone punches your face" was *100%* of the interaction I faced as a child. And this crazy idea that a bully will leave you alone? Never happens. And you have all the elements to figure out why, yet you get the answer wrong. No bully "gives up" precisely because they _need_ to show dominance; it's a Compulsive/Obsessive Disorder. Failing to establish dominance on _any_ triggers narcissist collapse; any failure proves that their core identity beliefs are false. Every bully I grew up with acted like stalkers; they *never* gave up trying to dominate and enslave me - even at the risk of their own lives. I don't know what "amateur hour" bullies you are thinking of, but my bullies were of professional quality. And there was no help for me as a child. If this is our best answer to bullying in schools its pretty clear why we struggle to deal with bullying. I have been both a bully and a victim of bullying in high school in different environments. The advice presented is all too simplistic and even downward dangerous. Bullying can be terrifying and extremely complex to deal with. Trying to reduce it to simple receipts can get those bullied in more trouble. Even the separation of bullying from physical violence is nonsensical. Physical violence is an integral part of bullying. To face bullying you needs both vigilance and a relentless systemic crack down from school authorities as well as a support system that works and truly protects and empowers the victims .

So true. We need to stop lying to the kids by saying, "We have a 0 tolerance bullying policy," because that's impossible. But if we tell the truth and let kids know that somewhere, sometime, people will be nasty to them while giving them these tools, they will be much better prepared to handle it.

This is a great video. I like how you break it down in easy-to-chew chunks. One caveat though: bullies learn not just from their target that the behavior is rewarding, but also from bystanders who seemingly enjoy it too (or fail to ameliorate the behavior). The audience paradigm is probably the most rewarding feature these days for bullies. They receive a positive feedback from bystanders, one or many, regardless of the target’s actions, and the bullying is likely to persist so long as they still see the target as vulnerable somehow and in the presence of an audience. I’ve spoken to other parents who’ve dealt with bullying, read many blog posts on the subject, and have seen a slow change in psychological papers that demonstrate a rise in conspiracy gaslighting and audience feedback that keeps a bully on target. Online bullying is prime example. In this space, bullies have anonymity but are often one-upped or cheered on by other would-be bullies, increasing the likelihood to not only continue the behavior on specific targets, but escalate it. Some of these bullies are doing this in school. So I’m cautious, while teaching my children how to deal with bullying, as you expertly lay out here, but temper that with a realization that this doesn’t necessarily mitigate the motivation of the bully to repeat or escalate the aggression. My fear is that educators and sometimes parents of bullying victims fail to provide a non-judgmental / non-fixit approach that is based on empathy and encouraging self-regulation. Responding to the target by judging the victim’s reaction to the bullying and/or telling the victim that they did not handle it the correct way gives the victim the impression that they brought this on themselves. I bring this up out of personal experience and from conversations with other parents who have had to deal with bullying, too.

Thank you very much for giving this speech, it will help so many people come out of a problem they could never get out of. Fantastic. This concept worked for me 30 years ago in high school. I had trouble fitting in and was bullied in grade school. But once I learnt to just be kind no matter the cost (I didn't know it would work, I fully expected to get punched in the face), in high school after one interaction with one of the biggest bullies in the school, I was never bullied again. And boy did it feel good to stay true to myself and just be me! Now I teach these techniques to my clients.

When I was at school I got bullied, told the teacher, and she told me I can bring him in and cane him but I bet if I do that it will get worse for you. "When he does it again punch him in the face hard" was her advice, "you might take a beating but he will not pick on you again". Anyway he started on me and I knocked two of his teeth out in front of everyone. She was right he never picked on me again, neither did anyone else. We were friends after that and I found throughout school that the people you stood up to or fought often ended up your mates in the long run.

I think everyone can be a bully in many different forms because like he said it is a power struggle to be the alpha or at least improve your position. If you look it at that way then you understand there is many fields of human activity where it is a power struggle not just in teasing. This struggle could be making money, getting physically stronger, looking better, being smarter, better at talking, better education, better history or background, more likes, being taller, being faster, being promoted. I think the truth is there is always someone going to be better than you at something and you are always going to be better than someone else at something. I think the solution to bullying is to create a culture were people help the weaker. So people see that when they are at the top of something or better at something they should use it to lift others instead of making them feel inferior or just ignoring them.

Thank you so much. I loved this speech, it was really amazing. I didn't get bullied but there's something that keeps makin me sad and sadder: SUICIDES and the growing number of SUICIDES that keep happening. It has made me really depressed, so much that I can't smile sometimes and I know it might sound weird but after thinking so much about why would they commit suicide and how sad they must've been to do so, I've started to get unhappy and kind of depressed( completely the oposite of how I was before _ I WAS REALLY HAPPY AND REALLY STRONG-). actually trying to help other people get happier or finding the way to help them(those who are sad), I got sad myself and I want to go back to where I was and start stronger... Stronger for Myself and also those who are in need. reading about suicide, I understood that beside poverty and bad financial situations, Bullies and Hate comments(online or even at home/school/work etc.) make people depressed and when people are depressed and don't see any other way, like they feel like it's not worth living this nasty life(I've been there sometimes), they feel like they are trapped inside a very dark square or hole and as I've feeled the same a couple of times, I really know that It gets out of control, the way you feel gets really out of control and you go deeper and deeper into that hole and that's when that sad thing( which I even hate it's name- Starting with s) occurs. about Bullying, In movies I saw that lots of people stay silent to it-both victims and witnesses, I wanted to know the reason and I wanted to know the best ways of stopping it or fighting it so now I'm searching about it and I won't stay silent if I see anybody getting bullied or even if someday I became a victim for someone. SO let's all stay strong and happy and live a good life while enjoying the nature and helping each other(if possible and if needed). Stay Safe

It's similar to what I would do in high school if someone insulted me. If someone insulted me, I'd just agree with them and laugh. They had nowhere to go at that point. That said, I was never in danger of being bullied in high school. All the bullying happened to me when I was younger and it involved being physically threatened and attacked, so this video would have been useless to me. All I could do back then was to fight back each and every time, which typically resulted in me receiving the same, or worse punishment from school than the actual bullies.

This is what I did. I came up with this theory that if I'm not giving what the bullies want then they'll get bored and move on. I also manipulate.. 🙂 for my own safety 👍. I make sure everyone knows when the bullying occurred. And that's how I stop them from targeting me. Note that every bully is different. If the bully likes bullying the weak, I talked back and acted tough. If they enjoyed being provoked, then I don't give them reactions. Also, never isolate yourself. Never leave an opening to the bullying to happen. My most memorable was when I verbally argued with a bully in the middle of the classroom. I kept my distance and didn't use profanity. I simply question her actions towards me to gain classmates' attentions. When the bully was about to lay a hand on me, I shouted that she started physical violence first. That's when the teacher arrived and the bully let it go. Edit: I hope this helps someone after reading.🙏 Always stay positive.

Interesting. Thank you. ) I have an interesting case in my life when I won over a bully in a different way but it still fits the concept. So thanks for the explanation. So the story is that when I was studying in a univercity I was living in a room with 3 more guys and 1 of them was real jerk that was constantly trying to make other people feel bad but at the same time he was trying to make himself look good as if it was not bullying but instead he was doing right thing. It lasted for pretty long time and I couldn't do anything. We even had a fight once, he broke my nose and I was throwing a dumbell into him in a hallway of our campus, then I spent 5 days in a hospital and after that we both had to visit a police department. But it didn't stop him from bullying me. So eventually I've remembered a game that some guys that I know were playing for no reason and without any visible goal. For some time they just stopped talking. It was like one guy is trying not to talk but the other one was trying to make first one say something. Looks a bit funny and pointless. But! I thaught about this: whenever I and that roommate had a conflict it always started from talking even after some bad action that he knew would make me mad, then during talking I would get more and more angry. Usually him too, but not always. So I decided to stop talking to him as well. Because even though he might have done something that would really drive me crazy I was still not that angry as if I would start to talk with him about it. So I would just ignore him and his ugly behaviour. He would do or say something ugly to me - I'm silent and don't even look as if I heard it. After a while he tried to behave normally so that I start talking to him again - I would still ignore him. Less then a week after I started that, he stopped bullying me. I just took away audience from him and his performance became pointless. It was still hard because I really wanted to beat him up, but I didn't really know how to fight back then so I chose that way. And it worked.
