Hi Emma! It's so strange to think that this 'Comparison' issue wasn't really a thing until Social Media came along. I never did this before and now I find myself doing it a lot. I think all of the tips you gave are really helpful. I find if i'm doing it then I try my best to get my head down with work and put my phone in another room so I don't feel the need to look at Instagram. Great vid!

Thanks Gareth 😁 I think I first started comparing my art to others when I chose Art as a subject for GCSE's. Before that I'd been the "arty kid" in class, but then I realised there were loads of people that were also good at art too, or better. But I agree that social media makes the comparison really really easy to do on a day to day basis. That's on a whole other scale. Still Instagram is one of my favourite platforms; I'm trying to enjoy the good sides of social media, and like you say hide my phone if I'm in that comparison head space 😊

@@EmmaCarpenterIllustration Instagram is my fav social media site also. It's personal management I think that helps to beat the negative side of the platform. It has so many positive sides to it. Hopefully I can find some time to join in with an illustration community like Folk Tale week or something similar soon!

gareth gough yes I wanted to join in with Folk tale week, it snuck up on me. Not sure if I’ll have time, but I love seeing what everyone else comes up with. 😊

Very good video! I started painting late in my life and still copy other paintings. I've painted from a photo and my photos as well. I find myself comparing and sometimes it really does make me question my talent. Confidence is low. I loved the idea of friending other artist but I quit facebook so youtube will have to do!

Yes KZbin really is such a great place to find other artists. Before I started making videos I just used to lurk and watch other people's channels, but it still made me feel less alone 🥰

Hello, I’m in the U.S. and you mentioned “Mastermind Group” twice in two different videos, could you please say the name. I don’t have any artist friends, which is very isolating. Thank you 🙏

Hi Giselle, the mastermind group I'm part of is a private group that one of my friends set up. We're not adding any new people at the moment. I'm sure you could set up your own group and use Skype or Google hangouts. Good luck 😊

Emma Carpenter - Illustration Journey okay, thanks. I tried that before thro SCBWI. They wanted a more experienced artist to help them out, I’m new at this. Okay, have a good one

This is BRILLIANT! Love the positive vibes you bring about!!! ^-^ These were all great tips! I especially like the last on about finding inspiration outside of just other artists (like the foxes and documentaries).. : ) Sometimes I just want to focus on something other than art, so that tip helped out a bunch!!! Much thanks!! ^_^
