I love how Will is honest and says okay, you have a hunting dog, he has a prey drive, him wanting to run up to sheep is him hunting, you are not going to get rid of that BUT... here's how we might tone it down a notch. At the end of the day, I think we all must be very aware what kind of dog breed we have (especially us owning working or hunting dogs), how high of a prey drive they have, and not expect perfection - not expect our dogs to be polar opposites of what they've been bread for for centuries. But learn how to steer that into the direction you and the dog are comfortable with.

I adopted a 2 year old husky/GSD a year ago. She'd been found as a stray. We went to training for her to learn to walk on a leash and to get a recall, which we were quite successful with. We recently moved from a very rural area to a city, and reactivity when walking past other dogs has been a new challenge we didn't used to have. Your videos are such a big help with us getting through this change!

Great video Will! I like to watch one of your videos just before I go for a walk... Gives me the reminder that it is my walk and they are following along which puts me in the right state of mind. I give them breaks along the way to sniff and mark their territory and then we get back to it. Love your videos!

This is where I had a hard time for two years. I didn't have a break/free command so walking wasn't structured and would get pulled here and there. Now we walk nicely and heel, and after several houses or so I give them a few minutes of "Free" sniff and mark time. Then it's back to heel and walking, or as I've hear here, migration time. :)

Loved this video! I’m starting to realize that I love dogs, especially training them. I’ll be watching many more of your videos to grow in my ability to train. I have three Goldens and I used your techniques to teach my dogs to walk on the leash with out pulling. I was shocked how quickly it worked! I’m now going to try and stop one of my dogs from barking at strangers during walks. Thank you 😁

Probably one of the best videos I've seen from you. Training an owner is a much better way to transfer skills to us as an audience. You've helped me train my mixed breed massively :) He's a mixed Lab/Shepard/Street breed, so It's tough to get a grip on his natural urges but approaching 4 months old, I'm seeing lots of this hunting behavior from him. If I'd of gone full love and no leadership, I'd of completely failed to train this dog so again cheers bruv, you're making the world a much safer place than you know.

We just adopted a Catahoula/Beagle mix,2 yrs old.. No background and I had no idea what a catahoula breed was.. We thought with the coat coloring he was aussie mixed.. Surprise on what the breed instincts are and at 52lbs how strong he is.. I did train my german shapherds in the past but this breed is so different.. I searched here and watched video's for fear aggression and non were "him".. That is till I watched your's and took him for a walk using your correction.. I felt so good to see he was reacting to me and not other dogs.. I cant wait for out next walk and to keep it up.. I need him to accept and ignore other dogs as we go camping and stay in state parks with so many dogs..Thank you Will

Always a help to watch these. As someone with a reactive dog. That line where it becomes redirected aggression is something we struggle with. Where circumstances take over the threshold point. Where i live, loose dogs running at us regularly.. t Hope this can be covered in a some way in the future.

It's hard to get the hang of all of this at the same time but I'm working on it and it helped in 2 situations tonight where 2 separate off leash dogs ran at my reactive great Dane and I on our walk: position yourself between the dogs, give your dog a sit or leave it command and then use your body to create distance between the off leash dog and your dog. You are showing your dog that you will control the situation, not them. You have to be mindful of what your dog is doing while keeping your eyes on the off leash dog. It can help when you yell hey or no at the other dog. It made one dog run home, the other dog I just had to keep it at a distance until the owner finally came out on the road to get it.
@SilvrRazorFeather

@Ash ley but having a reactive dog on the end of your leash makes it impossible if not dangerous to be in between the dogs. If the problem is my dog being reactive, and another dog comes running towards us then good luck getting a successful sit or stay.
@Ashley-lx9wr
@Ashley-lx9wr 2 жыл бұрын
@@SilvrRazorFeather I understand what you are saying. Every situation is different. And it's not fair when an off leash dog approaches a leashed dog so the best we can do is try to manage the situation. I'm not sure if Will has a video with tips for this.
@darcn3872
@darcn3872 2 жыл бұрын
absolutely, that the heart of it is that every situation is different. In many the position,body will help. And keeping body to create the distance between them. Especially the trigger dog is at a distance of some sort. However i have learned the hard - painful way of the danger of being in the middle and the reactive dog redirecting. By then the reactive dog is over threshold ( particularly with repeat offender trigger dogs), after many years of successfully having dogs, finding myself in this situation is a fright. Also its' shown me that some folks who profess to be dog lovers, actually only care about their own dog, and don't consider the other dogs experience. the infamous "my dog (off lead) just wants to play with your (on lead reactive ) dog such uncontrolled situations are probably too dangerous/problematic to capture in videos, as every situation is different. Here's to us all being the best calm consistent leader we can be every day😃

I've had remarkable results, with a properly fitted and properly used prong collar with my Shepherd. At 5'2" and under 100 lbs, I needed a tool that would work quickly to effectively get my Shepherd's attention on neighborhood walks. He's such an obedient dog though, just putting it on is enough of a signal for most walks. I have to make next to no corrections with it vs a traditional collar that would include a lot of pulling and pressure on his neck...causing more harm, if you ask me.

@@maxbleazardI think the idea that a prong collar will hurt the dog is wrong. My 94 lb female ridgeback will choke herself repeatedly on a regular collar but responds beautifully to the prong collar and has never choked herself or yiped with the prong on. Not only does the prong give me so much more control, but SHE clearly prefers it! Dogs are happier with clear leadership and the prong allows me to communicate clearly with her.

Damn, I just love your videos as I am one who appreciates a well behaved dog which unfortunately is seldom seen in today's society due to a number of factors probably IMHO the greatest in hearing owners state they just don't have the time to train their dog in spite of being embarrassed by their behavior in public or worse that they aren't embarrassed by their ill behaved dog. If people would just watch your videos and extract 10% it would be a better world for all dog lovers. I personally have owned 4 GSD in my lifetime and have recently lost my faithful friend of 14 years and feel a bit lost especially when I go for my daily walk and I can promise you if I ever get another dog I will subscribe to one of your training sessions because from all the videos of yours I have watched you make soooooooooooooooooo much sense and I never don't take into account that you make it look easy because you are a professional. My dog is EXACTLY this. She has 100% prey drive. She walks like an angel when there is nothing that spikes her interest (aka small furry doggies). When she sees something she goes deaf to me and she will pull and pull until she chokes. I literally have to stand in front of her and physically turn her away from what she’s trying to get. I’m looking at a prong collar because I think it will cause less trauma to her neck. When she’s in that ‘I don’t give a s**t head space I have to use the handle on her harness that I walk her with, literally just for that handle. I don’t have a lead attached to it. I CAN clip her lead to it if I need to but I don’t use it for walking her generally. This vid was so useful

Have got it better with stranger dogs, but with dogs that we have played it goes from 0-15 in a sec. Have searched about this with my malamute. And if I have corrected him correctly. Also could you make a video of how would be proper way to react or handle the situation where reactive dog gets reactive towards another dog etc. who appears out of nowhere(blindspot), comes around corner etc and owner don't have much time to correct.

I would love to understand how he distinguishes between prey drive and reactivity on a walk. My Rommie Shepherd rescue reacted exactly the same way towards cats when on a lead, excitedly lunging, sometimes aggressively growling or snarling, sometimes looking like he just wanted to chase, but with time and training and patience he learned to accept the cats and not react… to the point that the cats would groom his ears for him, and come out with us on a walk. He was the same with foxes too, but got to be ok with them (I rescue foxes) and we also had a vixen that would come out with us on a walk, tagging along at a distance of a few feet. But his reactions initially looked the same as this dog with the sheep… at least to me. What is the distinction?

I have a dog (German Shepard) that has all of the same behaviors. She is very challenging to train, and very frustrating. I've had to use the prong collar, which a lot of people say is abusive, but it was the only way to get her under control. I've finally been able to use a slip collar with success, but I'm the only one in the family she listens to. Your explanation of the prey drive was very helpful. I had an aha moment with that.

Unable to use a prong collar on my Tervuren/malinois cross as he’s fur is too long. Even an e collar has little effect on low settings because of the fur. It's my understanding that E-collars and Prong collars are not good for aggression and can increase it instead of decrease. Have you tried a head halter? They're pretty good because it makes your dog to look away if they pull or lunge.

I've gotten some dirty looks and a few comments for pulling my dogs away from sniffing, even when using a verbal warning. I don't get what the big deal is. Yeah, "that's what dogs do," but when they are stopping every 5ft it gets old pretty quick. Especially, when I know it usually means they aren't actually walking with me and they are mentally 1000 miles away. Once I taught them to focus on me so much improved! I don't know how to get that across to some people tho

I could see that the owner had decent lead handling skills when doing the drill. What was missing, and most owners are crap at doing, is praising the dog when the behavior is right. The literally went behind the owner twice after you clapped and distracted the dog. The dog was looking for direction from its owner, as it got from you.

There is no dog trainers teaching anyone how to train unruly small dogs. Which there are litterly millions who need help with bad dog behaviors. They dont even make a collar small enough for small dogs, you have to buy a cat collar. The small dogs are being neglected.
