That's the big secret about being an adult: we're all just making it up as we go along. A couple of years ago, I got in the habit of every night, as I go to sleep, thinking "today was a good day", and then thinking of one good thing that happened. Some days are easier than others to think of one good thing, but I can almost always find something. I do like the idea of conscious observation. I don't do a good enough job of sitting quietly with my own thoughts. I'll have to give this a try. Thanks for sharing.

I love this. I heard on the radio once someone said their mother always tucked them into bed with the phrase "another lovely day tomorrow, darling" (on BBC Radio4's Desert Island Discs with Gyles Brandreth, quite randomly). This phrase not only made him reflect on what was lovely in the day that just happened, but look forward in expectation to the following day. I sometimes says this to myself as I go to sleep, it can really foster a happy mindset.

Strip everything down and discover who you truly are, outside of social media, the news, all of it. Sit in silence every day. Know yourself outside the noise and persuasion of the outside world. Too often in life we allow ourselves to become a conglomerate of other people's stories, especially through social media and highly curated algorithms...and we then become confused in our purpose, because we think other's people's timelines and purposes should be our own.

I determined that the true meaning of life for me, others as well I hope, is to make life better for those that need their life to be improved, ideally to make the world a better place for those that come after us. Helping others is all that matters, whether it’s your family or friends or strangers or animals, there is nothing more fulfilling than being of service to the life on this planet. That’s what works for me and gets me out of bed happily every day.

Agreed. It makes me very happy to see others with this mindset. When I was younger, I asked my dad what the single most important thing in life is. He answered, "Reproduction." I am infertile, and he knew that then. He is still a good person, but many cultures have instilled in some people and groups that joy, service, guardianship, and fulfillment are found best in a family line, or at the very least in a single or simple process. Craig has brought together people who, especially with his advice, will make the world a happier and more sophisticated place.

Warning: I'm going to preach a bit. I walked away from the Christian church when I was 13 because the "answers" didn't satisfy my restless soul. I spent 8 years searching for what actually works. When I was taught how to read the Bible and what it actually is communicating--not what religion teaches--I started to get grounded. The big takeaway? Look for ways you can improve the lives of others--whether they are family, coworkers, friends, enemies, strangers--we can brighten anyone's day ,sometimes with something as simple as a smile. Extending kindness and a listening ear, these are fulfilling "purposes." As far as detailed tasks we do, these change through the seasons of life. But I've been doing this Christian walk thing for 48 years and it works!

One of the big things that's been motivating me was values work. By digging down into what it is that I actually value, the goal becomes living a life according to my values. In terms of having too many options, this actually cuts out the stuff you really don't want to do or only think you should be doing.

The “why” question is the one I knowingly avoided, cause everything I do is either because I have to/people usually do it/I enjoy the process. I’ve never known what do I want in the end, what’s my big or even average-sized goal. I just did whatever. Thanks for the video, man, will be observing.

Thank you for this. Two days ago, I described myself as being “stuck” in a conversation which has lead to the darkest point of my 31 years. I have been suck, paralyzed by fear, for over a year since a breakup and uprooting my life. But then, between the pain, I have also been experiencing what seem like miracles of the beauty of life (mostly Sarah Bareilles’ music and lyrics). Now, I am trying to just move…forward, preferably, and this video just happed to be waiting for me and everyone else who felt the same watching this. Thank you for being part of my story, Wheezy.

10:50 I had an epiphany about this recently. My dad is all I got and realized he is getting older and that one day he won't be here. He won't be here to help when I ask for it. To get advice from him when i need it most. Or to just have a conversation. I have not been the easiest to work with, always quick to argue, and overall, just be a turd. When all he is trying to do is help and prepare me to be a better human being and productive member of society, instead of a turd. Thinking about how much time he has here really puts things in a different perspective. I never thought about His time.

well, this video honestly made everything click for me now. the part on the meaning of life being a "story" you make up, a character, if you will. And also how it doesn't need to be that deep, that really made reflect about everything I've been doing with my life. I'm 23 now, and I've known ever since I was 15/16 that I wanted to be a singer. I know for a fact that's the thing I most love in life, and I've done some things in that regard, I've learned to sing, I've recorded many many covers over these years, that helped me learned too. I've released my first song a few months ago. but honestly ever since that I sort of gave up on anything related to music (I don't just sing, I play a few instruments and record/produce/edit everything I make by myself), I sort of felt more and more into the narrative the "normal" world wants me to do, which is just work and work, and it made me see the music side of me as silly child thing to want to be a singer, and that someone of my age shouldn't be thinking of or whatever and that I should not put much effort into that and focus more on "real" work. But sure, it is what I love, and I'll keep doing it, even if just covers. I really love just recording and producing stuff, and I guess that's the point, spend your time doing something you love, and if gets somewhere, that's a bonus.

I started visiting a psychologist recently and she asked me: how do you feel physically when you're angry?. I couldn't to save my life answer that question, I had no idea how my body felt in any state. Then she explained to me how sentiments come from the physical state. With that in mind, I've started to realize not only how I think but how my body feels. I used to get stressed out while driving, my muscles would tense, I would lean forward and twitch something in my body and drive fast and aggressively. Now I just don't. If emotions come from how my body feels, I just don't drive fast. That's what gets me angry, and now in much happier overall in life (of course that was just an example and not my only problem, but closing your eyes just to see how your body feel can literally change your outlook in life)

This reminded me of the book, 'How to Be an Explorer of the World' by Keri Smith. It's filled with small exercises to change your perspective and open your mind to observations. Example of the #1 observation - Right where you are sitting, "Write 10 things about where you are sitting right now that you haven't noticed when you sat down. Use your senses. Do it quickly. Do not censor. Okay, begin." The book has 59 exercises, including this one and one about noticing new things on a walk you have done a million times before.

Why don't you really know what you want? “Two reasons that you don't really know what you want: number one, you have it; number two, you don't know yourself because you never can. The Godhead is never an object of its own knowledge. Just as a knife doesn’t cut itself, fire doesn’t burn itself, light doesn’t illuminate itself. It’s always an endless mystery to itself. "I don't know", and this I don't know uttered in the infinite interior of the spirit. This I don't know is the same thing as I love, I let go, I don't try to force or control. It's the same thing as humility.” - Alan Watts

Be willing to try lots of new things until you fail. If you fail at something and you have no inclination to do it again. Try something else new. If you fail at something and you are internally motivated to try again, pursue that until you're not motivated to continue. Acknowledge that you're probably making up a story about how easy the process was for other people and you're on your own path.

Mr. Wheezy Waiter! Wow. I LOVE this video. It really resonates with a lot of themes in my own life and journey of trying to figure out what the heck to do on this planet. A mentor of mine years back had this exercise he taught me, called the Noticing Game, which is exactly what you describe in this video. Just asking yourself "What do you notice?" It's similar too, to what I learned years later in therapy for severe anxiety, where my therapist taught me how to breath, separate from a rumination, and then 'float' with my brain until it naturally started to notice things. Just allowing it to float, not fixating on any one thing, staying curious. All this to say, yes, I can personally attest to the truth of what you say here in this video! Also love the reframing of finding story. Dr. Bertice Berry's whole thing is that humans search for stories, to learn to tell your story with love, ah yes. Thanks for the actionable steps at the end -- so excited to try these 3 stories a day idea! I LOVE it! That's a lifegiving way to journal for sure! Thanks Craig. Deeply appreciated.

My brother and I once had a conversation about kinda ‘finding oneself’, and in that conversation he explained to me that ‘why’ isn’t a very good question. You can literally answer the question ‘why with anything.’ For example “Why do you like this channel?” Because it inspires me to write more stories. And then I can go into a whole thing about how Craig’s creative journey has inspired me to continue to push on with my creative journey. And while that is true, I’m not really digging into my own mind to really question my motivation as a creative. But ‘better questions’ ones that as ‘when’ and ‘how’ something occurred or began, brings out more concrete, and thought provoked answers.

This is great advice, but I want to add, depression could block a person from finding and feeling these things. Getting therapy and or antidepressant medication could lift the fog. As long as depression is still active, it would just be really hard to get to some of these mental places, because by definition depression is supposed to make life seem pointless or meaningless, by definition it dulls motivation. If a person has depression, there is no reason to fight it without help, that would be like a person needing glasses but not wearing glasses. It's a self imposed handicap to not get that help.

The issue for people is not what the one thing is, it is just find ANYTHING to make you get out of bed other than paying bills. There are things I love, but I would not get out of bed to do it. I would rather sleep 16 hours than be awake and only siting around surfing KZbin videos. The issue I have is the people who have this answer are wholly unable to explain it to anyone in a way that is not just canned tropes to those of us who don't. NOTHING works. If it worked, we would not still be begging the question after centuries. You found it, but HOW you did it is not how you tell us you got it. Or it would work. IT DOESN'T.
