Been skaing on and off since 2009. Always had to use a heel brake as always spin in circle with drag. Now im using frames with no heel brake so I've been practicing drag, but I always spin even with little weight on drag foot. Seeing this video of you showing that guy answered why I spin. I twist hips too. I can't wait to get out and try again. If I dont spin, thank you!
@fu5ha_edits Жыл бұрын
The hips twist is absolutely true. The other aspect is that the stronger your hip *adduction* (i.e. pulling your legs *closed*/together), the more you can open your hips and still be able to control it. Which will let you make it look more aesthetic but also allow you to employ more power (pressure on the braking foot). You really do need to actively tighten your adductors and keep your core tight to allow your skating leg to stay rigid and keep the stopping leg stable.

Id slightly prefer soulslide and even the standard plow stance. Especially the plow stance is so great, it has not that much breaking power and on a reall steep hill you might not become slower at all. But when its enought its the only breaking methode which isn't eating your wheels that fast....

Drag means drag. Nothing else. It’s the perfect word for it. This also preps the wheels for sliding. It gives you the feeling of the surface at any point, as well as the wheels and their state and condition. I just forget to do it, since the gliding and just rolling on my wheels feels so good, but I shouldn’t.

Talking about names, I would then rather call it dragtoastop, because it requires some process of braking. It is mostly the way of speed control and slowing down before a stop.

Nice video as always. Can you talk about how to manage the wheels wearing out while using this a lot? As a beginner I almost stopped using it because it would wear my wheels in a few sessions, which lead me to use other stops, like the power slide/stop. Nowadays I only use the drag to control my speed, lets say, when I am about to go through an obstacle and I am a little too fast, and also to recover stability when I go through some rough terrain, but not for really slowing down.

How do you feel about the soul slide? It's my go-to at high speeds (20+ mph according to my app) I've been rollerblading for 17 years and I've been riding 110s for 2-3 years. It stops faster than a t stop and I can easily transition to a t stop if I need to manage speed rather than come to a full stop. I skate to work so I get 20-25 miles a week

Thank you. Your explanation is nice and easy. I have a question, please: How to descend from a sloping plateau 1 km long. The plateau is not straight and has a slope to the right (more like a Formula car track). I mean, how to descend from this plateau by descending gently and not at high speed. Note that this plateau is approximately 1 meter in area, I mean between the right and left sides. The problem is that on this plateau there are people walking up or down, as well as stairs, so imagine it 😅. Here in Finland

Also, how to climb a 1 km long plateau (the same plateau) without rolling backwards, noting that a hand stick was not used.

It’s not sexy, but it’s a gem of a technique. During the Barcelona group skate, I remember thinking just how good the Drag is. People were using soul slides, which require more space & thought. The compact footprint and simplicity of this stop makes it unparalleled for speed control as far as I’m concerned.👍

I am having so much difficulty with this on a new rockered 4x90 setup. Everytime I try to gently place my braking skate down the wheels always want to hook up not skid. They are 85a which I think is part of the issue they are softer and grippy to start with. I also need to get better with one-foot balancing like you mentioned its just challenging with a rocker at speed you feel unstable even though I'm not. Any local skates going down in Toronto in the next little while? I need an excuse to get down there to skate. 😊

Too much weight on your braking foot
@Reloaded44 Жыл бұрын
@@floydthebarber71 I was thinking that too but even one wheel it hooks up just when I place it so can't be my weight alone. Maybe need to break in the wheels a bit more they are brand new only a couple handful on kilometres on them.

Try to just gently touch the ground at first. As u slow down u push down with some power. Weight still on the front leg
@floydthebarber71 Жыл бұрын
@@Reloaded44 sounds like still too much weight even when using one wheel. I’ve been through this too. Think of all your weight on the front foot, and hover your back leg at an angle without touching the ground. If you can hold that for 5sec, only then try barely make contact on the floor with the back leg while consciously thinking you’re still balancing fully on the front leg
@Reloaded44 Жыл бұрын
I'll need to consciously try to keep my weight on that one foot solely. I like that hold for a few seconds idea I'm going to try that on my next skate.

I always have used a heel brake and use it exclusively. Why would I want to f**k up my wheels with a drag stop? Basically I find the entire concept of stopping by devouring (or even damaging my wheels in the slightest) to be repugnant. Please educate me to the advantages of stopping using the wheels (despite all the wear that I'd put on them).
@BillStoppard9 ай бұрын
Stopping using 4 to 8 points of contact instead of one (heel brake) will bring you to a halt at least two times faster than a heel brake. The heel brake will wear down very quickly when you learn how to use it with good power, the expense will be the same or worse than wheels. Until the wheels are worn down a little bit,you won’t be getting the combination of slide and stick that makes inline so special. I can’t stand riding on new wheels, but an hour later I love them.Heel brake is okay for beginner, but adding that prohibitive clunk at the end of skate that can get you caught on simple curbs or drop offs and make great cross overs impossible.

I did one sersious drag yesterday just to see how fast I can stop with my "bad" side and... Doga,doga,doga... Some nasty flat spots 😒 that stop is for only when I really need it in a no space situation... It's very good for slowing down with no prep though as it's instantly available from a scissor position 👍🏻

If you want to skate like Bill, don’t get attached to your wheels. I liked heel brakes for that reason back in the day-you could come to quite a fast stop and nuke your brake, but brakes were cheap so who cares?

@@joshcarter-com haha... I don't care for my wheels so much, I use a lot of slides... But not a full force drag usually... Nothing against heel breaks but 1. I hate the sound it makes 2. @@ericbernardi8116 yea I don’t use a brake anymore for the same reasons. Also I speed skate about half the time and a 320mm frame + 125mm wheels is plenty to trip over without adding a brake, too! (And the geometry wouldn’t work anyway.) So RIP wheels.
