This was great! I just brought home a 9 week old Anatolian Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix who will eventually be guardian to our goat herd. She was the runt of the litter and her breeder said she was trying to bully the bigger pups off the food. I think it was probably more that she figured the only way she would get food was to fight for it. She saw me eating something she wanted while I was sitting on my bed with her and she tried to snatch it and snarled at me! I took my food and walked away, but I'm going to start using this method when I feed her to hopefully nip these issues in the bud!

Our dog has been resource guarding since day one. First thing was a sock (has now swallowed 3 socks whole and I am in the ER currently trying to pass it). Those instances with the socks were just holding on for dear life. However, we have recently had issues with rocks, and digging in soil. When our son tried to grab the rock out of his mouth, he growled and snapped at him, and soon after to his cousin. The times in the soil I pulled him away by his harness and he growled and lunged at me. He is only 15 weeks currently. How do we move forward in those acute moments? Do we use a more dominant approach of holding him down on his side until he submits/becomes still? Thank you

Recently adopted a Siberian husky pup about 3.5 months old. Today he showed mild resource guarding towards my 8 year old husky German Shepard mix; they both were given dry kibble, a little bit of topper and some water to add moisture. What’s the best way to fix this? I was told by a staff member at petland the puppy was used to eating next to the others but I’m not so sure now. My 8 year old husky mix has never had any resource guarding issue since I’ve had him when he was just a newborn. We decided to rescue the 3.5 month old husky from that pet store due to how sad/closed up he looked. We’ve only had him for two whole days and we need help to fix this behavior due to having a baby on the way. This video is super informational! Thank you for any advice in advance. It’s been 8 whole years since I’ve had to train a puppy.

Thank you for those amazing videos and collaborations! I woulk like to ask how much I should be concerned about my puppy developing that big ego ? It's an australian shepherd puppy (3 months now) and the dogs it frequents and that I let her play with are all on the more "submissive"/fearfull side of a personality. So that she runs after them, bites their tail or their neck, she is clearly just playing but I don't feel that the other dogs are teaching her proper boundaries because they are running away from her or just ignoring it completely. The other dogs I know and see are not well trained and are big dogs that could hurt my puppy by just laying one mighty paw on her, so I would not feel very comfortable let her play with them. She shows no resource guarding or any other agression/dominance, so that I am confused about if I should worry about that part or not ? Thank you

She can become what we like to call a full-contact player. The issue that can come up from full-contact players is that when they get older, often that play style can cause fights with dogs that prefer two-hand touch instead. Check out this video on my behavioral and modification flowchart. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIHOiGaJjMefnK8&pp=ygUwbmF0ZSBzY2hvZW1lciBiZWhhdmlvcmFsIG1vZGlmaWNhdGlvbiBmbG93IGNoYXJ0

Great tips! What would be the best way to train your dog not to ever touch another dog’s food? I have an adult rescue that stays with a friend’s dog at times when I’m out of town and apparently she likes to steal his food and snap at him when he approaches to stop her. I always come back home from vacation with my dog and the full bag of food that was supposed to be empty after my trip 😂 She wins, but I’d like her to stop this behavior. Any ideas?

The easiest fix is to feed the dogs separately. Either in different rooms or in the crate. Ivan had some good tips as well. Thanks!

Love your content Nate! I have a 9 week old malinois and currently the only behavior I am really struggling with is that she gets jealous when I eat, i guess, and will squat down looking right at me and pee on my floor. It appears to be a bid for attention - and it works of course, I tell her "nope" and then take her outside and put her where she normally pees outside. She knows "nope" and Im pretty sure she knows to pee outside though she still will go in unfamiliar parts of my house (upstairs). She is usually really good about it and will indicate by her ritual of climbing up on my fireplace and i'll then recognize and take her outside. Twice she hasnt indicated before she did it but the last time she did indicate so maybe its my fault for not immediately stopping eating and letting her out as soon as I saw it, but im pretty sure its not a case of her not being able to hold it anyway. Im considering just putting her outside while I eat, but thats not really addressing the behavior. Should I just tell her nope while shes peeing and then ignore her until im done eating, not give in to the attention seeking, and clean up the mess later? Obvious solution is to crate her while i eat maybe? Putting her in the backyard serves the same purpose but she cant see me eating so i'm not sure it would communicate what I want. Only eat immediately after she goes pee outside? We are working on crate training but she still gets agitated when i manipulate the door. Would appreciate your thoughts! Thanks for the great information in your videos.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3zUqmOgbNmMn5I this should Help. I would also correct the puppy for going in the house. A correction is something we add to the situation to stop the behavior. If the behavior doesn’t stop, then the correction is not high enough. Dogs do things based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, the motivation to prevent something unpleasant, or the behavior itself is fun. Your puppy has to be more motivated to prevent the correction, then he’s motivation to do the undesired behavior.
@Desimplification
@Desimplification 3 жыл бұрын
@@NateSchoemer Thank you!! I wondered about some type of correction shes still so young so I didnt know if a correction would be appropriate, im thinking i'll try a loud noise. I did manage to eat in peace today. I did it after i took her out to pee. She whined and complained and did her usual thing of wanting my food and trying to get me to pay attention and I just ignored her and ate. She eventually calmed down and I would reward her with a high value treat if she laid down at my feet quietly and calmly. She would of course get excited and start up again but I just repeated until she was sitting quietly at my feet while i ate and wouldn't get back up and whine after the treat. I worry that maybe im rewarding the begging but, I guess its OK if shes quiet and not pushy about it, right? She of course didnt have anything in the pipes this time so we'll see about next time i guess haha.

She growls and snaps but she’s only 10 weeks, we have a 4 month puppy at home but we don’t really let them play together. How can I stop this type of resource guarding? It seems related to her not getting what she wants. she doesn’t mind being picked up otherwise

Our 9 week old BC growls when we are near his bowl. I used to train dogs so I'm used to the trade up but curious if you would correct a puppy that bite at that age. I ask because at 9 weeks a simple scruff and then going back to really easy trades seems like a good age to create that come to Jesus type moment. I'm not talking about over and over pushing him to that but it's do able at 9 weeks. Thoughts

So today I gave food to Togo(my dogs name). After few minutes once he started to eat,. I noticed his bowel wasn't locked into the kennel. I told Togo sit of course he's into his food, didn't sit just chumping along. I went to lock in the bowel he growled n did a little bark at me, I said no Togo and took the food bowel away. I started over told him to sit wait and OK you can eat again. What you think? Is he having food aggression. Did I corrected the right way? Should I repeat action by touching his food bowel and see if he growels?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
The growl is common, often due to insecurity. I would recommend what Bethany does in the video. When you feed him, put half or more of the food in his bowl, then while he's eating add the remainder of the food while he's eating. Make sure you deliver the food by hand, and very slowly, so he knows you have food and so he doesn't growl. This will help him understand that when you are nearby when he's eating, you add value to him. This will (over time) make him happy to see you coming over while he's eating.

Do you have a video on training a puppy/dog to only listen to one person
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
No, but it’s rather simple. Only one person should train the dog. Once the dog knows the stay command, ask other people to give the dog commands, if the dog responds to the command, then reinforce the stay. This will teach the dog to only listen to one person. You may have to do this with a few people for the dog to fully understand.
