Right on the money. With social networks particularly I think your following should constantly churn. I often find accounts that present new attitudes to me, and help me shed light on shadows. Typically after a few months (variable), I find their content predictable and there's a distinct new sense of "I'm consuming this because it makes behavior I dislike feel acceptable" vs when it started "I'm consuming this because it's illuminating things I didn't know about myself." Is what they produce still funny/insightful/gives a dopa hit? Yes. But it'll always be there, and it's a relationship I don't need anymore. Unfollow.

The best dopamine detox video that I’ve seen. At 65, I’ve watched my life go down the toilet since Facebook, apps, Smartphones, iPads. I remember my life before personal technology as being more full, pursuing sports, music, creativity, and IRL social experiences. Now, I say I can live anywhere as long as there’s internet and my life Will basically be the same, scrolling my way to death. Even though I’ve taken advantage of many positive aspects of KZbin (learning to play piano, ukulele, violin; pursuing the great philosophers and books with inspiring guidance, support in making positive changes in my life like yourself), I find myself seeking more videos than doing the actual activities. I’ve become a passive observer of life rather than an active participant. I’ll have to dig deep and make the commitment to launch this sorely needed detox. Thank you for your clarity, insight, and completeness.

A key to succeeding in dopamine detox is having goals and habits to fill in the time that was once occupied by social media, substances, and unhealthy tendencies. If you decide to dopamine detox cold turkey without a plan of what you're going to spend your time with, you'll go crazy. I try reading more, learning things I've always wanted to learn but never actual got around to, and exercising. Doing this is so satisfying in the healthiest way, and you can feel that you're doing better internally!

Currently on my discipline phase where I slowly removing bad habits such as bringing phone while taking a dump, scrolling to my phone while eating, and scrolling through to social media after heading to bed. It was hard to kill an old habit but I can certainly do it with an intention to change especially I am on the verge of jealousy towards my peers’ career. I will be turning turning 25 this year yet I feel like I didn’t achieve anything. But I do have a goal to continuously working on improving and to become financial literate in the future so I have been working so hard to get back also to minimalism as I am working on my habits. Thank you so much for this additional knowledge and tips. 😊

I’m 23, envy over careers or looks or someone’s life are only a reflection of our own un healed trauma. When you are jealous, remember to be thankful, because whatever it is just showed you exactly what you want and how you can heal. If you see someone and you’re jealous over their career/money look into why. We all have our own unique path that leads to love and joy. I struggle with the same thoughts ‘why not me’ ‘Im better’ ‘I could do that’ ‘they’re just lucky’ etc. You’re not alone. Good luck!

"25 and feel like I didn't achieve anything" that is soooo subjective honeslty. I don't at all mean to diminish your feelings but it really is very subjective. You probably have either a Bachelor's degree or some type of certificate and are already working in some field that's not a cashier at a grocery store or another job usually requiring only a highshool diploma. At 25 I had finally graduated highscool. At 27 now I'm taking a massive break from uni after only going to and passing one exam in three semesters and only working 7 hours a week. _I feel like I haven't achieved anything._ That's my bar for something ig - graduating high school and speaking three languages is apparantly nothing in my book but some people will look at those achievements and tell me I'm fortunate and blessed to have those to step on. Is there something you consider nothing but actually isn't nothing? Maybe it will help you gain a positive perspective. However, I fully encourage you to keep on bettering your processes, the quality of your daily life and your character! I wish you all the best.

@@bdorottya it went very well actually My productivity increased and found myself able to work more, focus more, enjoy more when the detox ended and started regulating my social media consumption It's a very viable strategy which I highly recommend But 7 days might be a bit much for some people so you should start with 24 hours and work your way up from there just to get a sense of effects

I won't be consummed by socials, controlled by junk food and feeling like shit after I accomplished nothing all day. I will be productive and live at 100%. @@unotwotriquatre Hmm my english is not the best :D I was addicted to competitive online videogames. I tried so often to quit, but it didn't go well for long. Then came one of these moments, when I thought over my past and future I searched for professional help and I felt so bad for it. Looking back this was a very important step.I told myself before over and over again, that I can do it alone without any help. Man was I wrong I meant a person which is specialized to help with gaming/gambling addiction. I was completly free to leave the process whenever I wanted. I didn't leave, but that possibility is one of some, that gave me safety that I am not be pushed in a direction I didn't want. I started with no one telling what I did, because I was ashamed. Slowly, after months, in the process I began to open myself to my closest circle. Little by little my life was changing in a positive way, I could not imagine before. (Maybe I should use deepl :D)

Well, I've just come back after absolutely messing up an exam and I feel terrible and exhausted, that yet again I feel this sense of regret. Not because I failed it but because I didn't perform to my potential at all. And I've realized that the root cause of this is all the small bad habits which I've been doing everyday. Whether it's scrolling through youtube mindlessly, or playing video games or over using social media, all these factors contribute to how I've been performing academically and mentally too. It's a blessing that I've found this video, and now I know exactly how I can be who I want to be. Thank you for being a changing point in someone's life and keep it the good work man! @@williammclean6594 it can work as a person with ADHD, we just need a LOT OF HELP from other people, (parents, friends etc) to not relapse into the bad habits again. Lastly you need to put a lot of timers and apps that will force you to not use the internet. If nothing works, you can always shut phone down and do activities like reading, talking to people etc

I always watch these types of videos, and they always say to delete social media, or other similar stuff. But as ive started my ‘journey’ ive noticed that small amounts of scrolling, in intervals really helps me. My feed it filled with my personal interests such as philosophy, psychology, and other things that i can learn and take advantage of. I love how you express this in your video as i dont see anyone else doing the same.

An aspiring teacher here! My phone crashed yesterday night and didn't light up at all. Therefore I was forced to spend today without it, which was an insane experience. At first, I felt anxious because I thought I would miss out on essential things in the group chats I was a part of, but going about my day, I felt a sense of relief towards the end. I realized how attached I was to my phone and how instant gratification kept ruining every single attempt I had of getting my life together. Hi, I am usually more of a lurker than a commenter, but I sincerely want to thank you for this video. A few months ago it inspired me to do a dopamine detox. I started with seven days and it was such an eye opening experience in terms of the amount of time I am wasting behind a screen normally. I felt like I had so much time and I have done so many things in that week that genuinely give me joy, but I hardly ever do because I “don’t have time”. I will for sure do another seven days soon.

The only issue I have with this protocol is the end goal: that dopamine detox will make you more productive. We need to be breaking our societal expectation to achieve rather than come up with fancy protocols that make us better and more efficient. We should dopamine detox in order to be satisfied and happy with who we are without needing to do anything more. That’s how we end depression and achieve mental health and clarity; THAT should be the goal of the detox. Great video overall, I’ll definitely be doing this.

Do you have any idea how fragile this argument is? You cannot state mental health as a broad term and that this will solve everything. Mental illnesses like depression, anxiety disorders, mood disorders and personality disorders should be taken seriously and treated. People with mental illness shouldnt just go do a dopamine detox. Especially with more severe versions of depression leaving the bed or hanging out with friends is just not an option. So no this video is not how you achieve mental health it could play a very small part of it but thats it.

As a millennial, I was the first generation told it's acceptable to waste your life online. We were systematically encouraged to do it, at the expense of our health, relationships, and souls. I'm so happy to see the younger generation waking up.

@@investlikeawarrior fair enough, I won't delve deeper. When I was a kid there wasn't an explicit "video games'll rot your brain" attitude but it was definitely palpable between the lines. Not so much for internet because it was so basic compared to today, but the messaging about lazing away in front of a screen was certainly present for T.V.

What helped me the most was going into settings, turning on a black and white only display. The colors also suck you into your phone and without colors using your phone isn't as fun. Stay strong, we're all in this together!

This will work for most people, but if you have adhd, you really need to have a planned no pressure all desire day,it's just a moment of apresiation to feel the dopamine you have gotten and deserve, you won't get in a while and that is ok, so you can crave more , and feel motivated to do well the next week.(dopamine is not the problem for us, it is the lack of it)

That is a very nice summary of what I am trying to do right now I think. I think I started my dopamine detox 11 Days ago. Let me tell you how I started it. I wanted to achieve a goal which is to be good at jumping ropes. I decided to start a hundred day journey of jumping ropes. So I made a plan of each day what I want to practice. I decided also that I have to document every day by filming myself and reviewing it. Last year I started journaling. This helped me a ton to reflect on how things are going and what I could improve in my everyday life. I had the inner urge to do something out of my life because I am 25 years old and I haven't felt that I achieved anything. Since I was a former gamer I decided to have another view on my life. At the start of this year (2023) I no longer treated my life as a real life but as a game. A game that I can only play once where every single decision is crucial to the outcome of the game. Every decision that I make in this game leads to the person that I am playing, which is myself. So in order to level up the character that I am playing, I need to decide what is best for me and I have to recognize things that I automatically did by habit that I don't want to do and eliminate these habits. This decision lead me to regaining control of myself and decisions so that I can build habits that I want to build and get rid off the old bad habits. So for me the most important points to progress are: - Reason: pick one or more reasons that are strong enough to make you want to change your life - Be aware: You have to recognize it when you do things by habit. For example I had the automatic response to look on my phone whenever a notification pops up. I am still not recognizing it enough but I eliminated this habit by muting my phone. - Self reflection: Reminding yourself why you want to change your life. Put it in notes, set an alarm with a note or just do journaling. Assess in that journal how your day was and how it can be improved. I am only 11 days in but I think that I might be able to do this 100 day journey. And you can do it too. Let's do it together :) P. S. : Thank you for the video, it was the perfect timing!

Aside from the main ones, I have a slight addiction to daydreaming. As someone who once pursued animation, imagining visuals and stories has it's merit. But I realize sometimes it's too much. I find myself coming out of a long daydream thinking, "I've seen this a million times" and yet I want to go back. It's a little bit of escapism too. I've tried to detox from it before but I always end up buckling a few days later. So I want to try this protocol but daydreaming will be my challenge. I figured making it deliberate and maybe timing it for 20 minutes might help. Wish me luck~

Speaking of addiction before I quit using drugs because of the addiction I of developed, I used to have fun Daydreams all the time. I've been sober 5 years and the only kind of day-dreaming I do now is worrying. I guess what I'm saying is it could be a lot worse Daydreamin isn't all that bad

I feel like when I'm sick of worrying, that's when I want to escape and daydream but it's so intrusive like a broken record. But a lot of the time, they are still pleasant so it's not that bad as you say. All the same, I feel a need to take back my life.

Hey there, I struggle with this too. I learned pretty recently that it's called "maladaptive daydreaming" and it's a coping mechanism. Some psychologist channels talk about it here on YT too. I started as a kid when I used daydreaming as an escape from unpleasant emotions and situations and never really stopped, I just have periods when I do it a bit less (when life becomes fun and interesting for a while). These days I think I use it mostly as an escape from my boring everyday reality. It's so addictive. I used to think like you that it's nothing bad since sometimes I get inspiration for writing from it, but lately I'm realising these are all just excuses to go and get lost in my imagination, even when it doesn't serve any practical purpose anymore. I think you've already made a huge step, realising too much of it is not actually good for you and wanting to do something about it (a lot of people who do it swear it's the best thing and see no problem with it). I haven't tried a detox yet but I am becoming a bit more aware when I do it and try to cut it short. I'm also trying to address the root cause by working on my anxiety, which is probably the number one thing that stops me from having a more exciting everyday reality (the thing that makes me daydream in the first place). I started going to therapy too, which I avoided for a long time. I wish you good luck on your journey !

@@KoiAcademy 7 days straight, and I was being super aggressive, stressed out and anxious about everything. I needed to calm myself down, since it was affecting others as well but most importantly myself. Marijuana was a big factor same with comparing myself to others on instagram subconsciously. Meditation “woke” me up and man I really appreciated this. I’m able to distinct why I feel certain ways at moments and catch myself more often. Working out was already a habit so that part was easy. I was able to show others as well, n encourage them to take this first step.

How long - at least __ days in full detox mode - overstimulation - phone-speaker analogy 2. Execution - emotions, Reaching for the phone - Boredom - dopamine around but receptors haven’t reset yet… Jog brain that healthy dopamine alternatives work - 3 daily practices A self reflection - 10 mins SR meditation, journaling, SR is the vehicle to self discovery and building block to improvement B 30 min workout move your body - all the million benefits - steady dopamine release after workout - Sexy!!! C connect - whoever (maybe share about your detox!) - parents, sibling, friend 3. Restoration - become “anti-fragile” Reintroduce, carefully -intentionality, build the life you want Goal isn’t to delete everything but build a healthy relationship, who controls who if you have to cut yourself off completely? I almost failed my Class and it was an alarm clock to better my life. But i hit the snooze button. This year i got through with a 1.5ish avrage (1 is best, 6 is worst) but it was because i was sent to a lower school level (different reasons, not because i failed). Next year decides if i get to go to university or if i fail at every goal in my life. I will use this video wisely in exactly 2 months

I’m actually on the detox and it’s working well, but don’t get me wrong I’ve had a couple of withdrawals but I’m going for an entire year without socials! So I’m cutting off all contacts, and I’m also going to the gym, to get my mind in place. I’ve been hearing so many good things about meditation as well!

This is a very good video😊 [My experience] The last few years I spent LOTS of time on the phone. At first I'd spend hours watching anime but at one point I swapped that by reading manhwa. I even prioritised that over whatever I had to do. During lockdowns the work would pile up and I'd do it at the very end (evening of the dead-line). I once even did 30 maths homeworks in one day and night because the teacher said she wanted to see my maths homework book...but I didn't learn from that experience. When the final exams were nearing I'd still spend loads of time on the phone instead of learning. That would go on until the day before the exam everytime. When it was time for the results I didn't want to check the mail including my results. Turns out I passed all of those subjects (German, English and maths (maths was a rather close call)). If I had actually failed I wouldn't have been deserving of being upset or anything since it would have been my fault. I was finished with school before summer but I still had something to complete for school like 2 weeks ago. I extended the time in order to complete and then present my pre-scientific paper. That was while all my classmates had already finished school completely and started going to university, going abroad, etc. Note, that the reason why I wasn't finished was because I procrastinated the whole time by spending my time on the phone instead. [What has changed] So, now since the last couple of weeks I have focused on decreasing my phone usage. I went from 5-8 hours a day to 1-2 and I am trying to switch bad with good habits such as going to bed early/waking up early, drinking more water and so on. Regarding social media, I am lucky that that would only be YT (I once had Instagram but deleted that a year ago since I never went on that platform anyway). I have also wasted so much time here by scrolling through those damned shorts. I deleted them from my homepage for good and watch longer videos instead (which let's me control the content I consume while also restoring my attention span a little). About the other points mentioned in the video, I don't smoke, drink or take drugs. This is why I think the 'springboard' is not too high and I can change my lifestyle easier. My biggest problem is 'only' procrastination. Now I wish to adopt and train those good habits such as productivity/focusing, self-discipline, cut down on the sugar consumption, consistent exercising, reading non-fiction books and other goals I have set up. For a decrease in phone usage I use a notebook instead of the notes app for writing down thoughts. Also, so that I am in more 'peace' I have turned off all the notifications (I am 'guilty' of reading the message without going into the app but then having it clutter my mind along other things). This way I am at peace. And I generally want to be at peace by avoiding hectic stuff and do things with intent.

@@ahmadqaisghafoory3870 After two months I can say that it still works out pretty well. It is a consistent matter so I do struggle upholding my good habits sometimes but I think that is just natural. At the time I commented this I had nothing significant to do (only cooking and doing house chores) since I didn't go to school anymore nor to work or anything (that's why I had the urge to improve my mindset/habits as to not fall back into hours and hours of phone usage). But this month I have started working full-time so I was more or less forced to implement habits such as waking up early and spending less time on the phone. Less phone usage really improves my lifestyle a lot since I don't waste my time with nonsense and can use it for self-reflection and living meaningfully instead^^

I have similarly intense diagnoses and I feel like most approaches for quitting social media lead me into pure darkness. I've tried doing a dopamine detox several times in the past two years but after three weeks or so I end up getting addicted to social media again. I'm going to follow your advice and see how it works out this time because I desperately need to get back in touch with reality. I'm starting tomorrow. I'm going to come back here in a month and write about how it went. Let's see if by then I'm able to open a video on youtube without first going through all of my youtube recommendations!

There is no real way to "waste your life." It's only an illusion given from a lack of accomplishment (which does affect you mentally) and not hitting checkboxes society expects of you. That's how you feel like you're "wasting your life." Get those feats you need to stop feeling that way, and enjoy yourself. Enjoying every moment you have, rather than looking back or forward is the way to live the best life you can.

@Vashu-XYZ You have to help yourself. I am too. So try detoxing (I'm starting tomorrow, told my mom to help me), if it doesn't work, try something else. Work on stopping these addictions but don't be hard on yourself, be patient with yourself. Remember that you have full control of your body, so you CAN do these things, you just need to try. And if you fail - try again. Don't give up.

Sometimes I literally just want to NOT be on the internet. NOT on the computer or phone. I HATE that all of my books are online now, and I have to print a crap ton just to have an actual physical copy of the text. I also don't have the extra money to get the books physically, when my university does "inclusive access" so all of our text is paid with tuition and is given to us on online platforms. I'm grateful that they do this, but it is frustrating when I just want a book in hand. Being on the computer in general is too tempting.

I'm seeing this and tomorrow is my last exam in the semester, i pretty much fucked up in all of my exams and I'm pretty sure I failed some of them , I did study but not as much as I should, I spent days in my phone scrolling and wasting my time , I lost most of my healthy habits and gained a lot of bad habits, I put myself in such a messy environment and I had to face a lot of stress and anxiety bc of what I did , I promised myself that I will never put me in this position again, I'm going to work hard on myself and change my life for the good , It may not be easy but it is possible

Hi just want to tell everyone that i realised the need for this detox and am starting it from right this moment i have decided a time of 8 days and i will succeed in it am positive this time. A good thing I found to reintroduce my phone into my life was setting the colors to grey. If your phone isnt the little colorful screaming thing to bring excitement into your life its way easier to put it away. Going to check on your report in two days :)

I've been wasting my time for a past 1 month now. I have got to prepare for exams in next 6 months. Going like this won't help me in getting through the exams. 14:20 I did this too, but It was too easy for me to ignore the time limit on the phone app and keep on scrolling forever. So, I went to my mom and I asked her to set a 30-minute limit for social media apps and lock it with a passcode she chose (without telling me). That way, the apps would lock after 30 minutes, and I couldn't use them for longer than that, even if I wanted to. This honestly helped me a lot, and I would suggest you do the same. You don't necessarily have to go to your parents; you could also ask a friend to do this for you.

I gave up social media 3 years ago. Although I still have vices like video games, and KZbin, I feel I’ve taken a huge step. I’ve started learning a new language which has taken up a lot of my time the last 6 months which has given me a feeling of accomplishment. I’m hoping to replace video games and KZbin with reading, but that’s still a work in progress. But really, I think giving up social media was a necessary first step and I’ve never regretted it.

One thing to add, in the dopamine detox, atleast in my opinion it’s better to not discipline yourself to do anything extra like -studying - working out And so on, mainly because it’s already a battle avoiding all of the bad habits so you are increasing the chances of burnout. So in the detox, just simply relax and reset, don’t push yourself to do extra just stop the bad habits. Then after the detox you can then find joy in the good habits you develop since there are no rivaling bad dopamine habits like porn, tiktok, and stuff like that

@@manu-su3ws I think he meant not adding in additional tasks you aren't used to like that. Like, if you don't typically study that regularly, then it would put undue pressure on you during this time. If you regularly study, continue to do so, right?

I started doing dopamine detox when you released your previous video about it. I was good about it for 3 days but on the 4th day I was very anxious and I just wasn't able to study and got very stressed about my upcoming exams. So then I had to break the routine. Now, I wanna try it again but this time completing it :l

I have done a dopamine detox and I can only tell you how cruel it felt to me for the first two days. I was constantly fidgeting, I was constantly pouring out my feelings in my journal, and I just felt so irritated at everything. I shed tears even. I’m not going to sugarcoat it if any one if you guys are going to try it. Please find someone to talk to, I talked with my sister a lot during my dopamine detox and it helped a bunch. Before any of you assume I am doing fine now after experiencing it, I’m not. I fell back into habits because I didn’t know how to properly reintroduce the addictive habits in order to lessen their hold on me forever after. That’s why I am here, watching this video. It’s okay if it doesn’t work out the first time for you. When it does work out for you whether it be after the first try or second, be proud of your achievement.
